could have been fake money...although i would have loved to see the groundskeeper pocket the dough :)
Old gag. Mariners fans already did that to A-Rod.
Fenway = unoriginal.

Jacobs Field Faithful did it to Albert Belle first.

And he doesn't bring anything to this team defensively, either. :p
the bunt was pitiful too, but i'll give him some credit. he has made a couple nice plays tonight.

Tonight the place was electric. It of course has been before, but tonight was a different feel. Felt more like a soccer game. Crowd was all focused on johnny. I feel bad for him, I dont think he thought it would be that bad. Oh, and the creep who threw a ball on the field in the 7th is an ***. I was at thegame, did they say anyting on TV?
Man it was freezing. More later.

Why was Cairo playing first base? Is Andy Phillips hurt? Or does Cairo have some sort of monster phantom career average against Wake with like a 12 AB sample size that Torre was trying to exploit?
Today was the first Wakefield start in 2006 where the opposing team didn't steal a base. These are the little differences that Mirabelli can make that might steal a close ballgame or two.
Methinks Jeter was safe diving back into second.
Jonathan Papelbon will eat your children and give them all funny haircuts...and slam the door on any team in baseball.

it looked like Jeter made it in time, but Cora blocked the bag. I know you're not supposed to block the bag intentionally, but if you're going for the ball (which he was) it is ok. I think jeter got Cora on the leg.

Since when are you not supposed to block the bag? They typically don't when runners are coming since they don't want to get spiked (at least catchers have shinguards), but Remy was all over that one, effusive in his praise.
Captain Intangibles overruns second, and then drops a popup... beautiful to see.

He didn't drop the popup, you have to be within 10 feet of it to drop it ;)

I dont think you can block it without the ball or without going for th ball. But since he was going for it, it's all good.

I'd be willing to give up the steals. I was just happy that nobody who struck out made it to first base.
Without the wind, the score might have been 10-9. Giambi would have had a home run, Mirabelli would have had at least a double, Wily Mo would have had a grand slam, and Papi's home run would have traveled about 500 feet.

Yes it was. So cold and windy that I was thinking about leaving the game early. Me. Leave a Sox-Yankees game early. THAT'S how cold it was. I thought I was prepared. The wind was the Red Sox's friend last night as there were at least 2-3 balls that would have been homers if the wind didn't keep them in the park. One of them looked like it had legs and then dropped straight down for Wily Mo to catch. I said to my dad early that Ortiz would probably be the only one with strength enough to hit it out, not thinking he would actually do it. Hurray!
I agree about feeling bad for Damon. I wasn't going to boo, nor was I going to cheer. It did go a little overboard. Some of the signs were eyeroll inducing. That said, I thought he overdid it with the tip of the hat to the crowd. Went on too long, seemed a bit hammy, like it was planned. Unlike OC's return where I think he did that because it stunned him that the crowd cheered for him.
Tito looks like a genius for pinch running for Cora. I was curious as to why he did that as Cora is not a fat, slow, white guy. :)
Jeter did not have a good night in the field. I take it the wind affected that ball that dropped between him and Matsui in the 8th, but I still think it was playable. Of course, that's my opinion as I sat in the stands. :)
Fun game. I'm glad the baseball gods held the rain off to get the game in.
Blackout - was something wrong with field early on? It seemed like when they were watering the infield they were taking a lot of time with the hose behind the pitching mound, like something was broke.
Oh, and Lone Star's national anthem was awesome. I didn't know they were in town.

Scarlet: Something happened, what specifically I dont know. They had some problems though. I actually was unaware it was supposed to be a 7:09 start for ESPN. First pitch was at 7:12, so it wasnt that bad. Seemed worse.
THat popup Jeter missed. I had a perfect view right near first base. The ball didnt move a ton, but it stalled. He went way back, and lost it, byt the time he found it it had come back towards SS. I had good perspective, I am guessing being underneath it is a different story. I am more surprised he put himself in position to get thrown out at second.
Oh, and did I mention it was cold?

Since I was at a show, all I got to actually watch was the first 1 - 2 innings and then the 8th - and with no sound (loud bands playing on stage). When Ortiz worked the count full, my friend (who's a complete idiot) said "watch, he'll blast one here". I'm thinking "great, jerk, you just jinxed him. Now he'll strike out". But nope. So I bought him a beer. :D

I dont think you can block it without the ball or without going for th ball. But since he was going for it, it's all good.
You can block the bag so long as their is a play. Play meaning you're about to receive the ball, have the ball etc. If you're standing on the bag blocking a runner (or obstructing a runner in anyway w/ out a play on him) rounding the bases etc and there is no play (meaning the ball isn't coming to ya anytime soon for a play on the runner) then it's obstruction.
So long as their is a play not only is it legal, but you're SUPPOSED to if it is going to assist in making the out. Pretty much fundamentals.
