Wily Mo Pena is on his third team because the Yankees completely mis-handled him (shocking), and Cincinnati needed pitching more than a fourth outfielder, not because he lacks potential. Stern and Mohr are exactly what they oughta be, fifth and sixth outfielders. They'd be starting for some other teams.

Ellsbury has now hit in 10 of his first 11 games. Also six steals. If it weren't for former junior hockey enforcer, Nyjer Morgan, he'd be leading the league. Lowrie has started slower. Hottovy has been outstanding in his first three starts.

Lowell is only 32, he has had one bad season in his last 5 seasons: His last two before the 2005 debacle:

thats fine. Bernie Williams used to be good too. So in your honest opinion, which season do you think Lowell is more likely to have this year.. 2005 or 2004?

I'm not trying to be mean, I would have taken him as well just to get beckett. and Lowell is a former Yankee prospect, so I've always wished him well. But contending teams are supposed to have pop at the corners and I'm sorry but Youkilis/Lowell combo isnt scaring anyone.

Youklis doesn't have much pop, he reminds me a little of Sean Burroughs in that regard.

Yes, Lowell isn't going to be A-Rod, but he does have a good amount of pop in his bat, and I would expect more of a 2004 than a 2005. But more than likely, it will be a season between the two.

Hey Dopey, they don't need to be permanent because the Sox actually have a farm system. And they can't hit? Funny, their career and season-to-date stats say otherwise. They can also catch it pretty good, unlike the Slo-Pitch softball defense NYY is running out there.
Stop. Now.

Yeah, but then he turned 80.

Also, wasn't Stern acquired as a Rule 5 player? I don't see how that should be held against him, especially since the Sox made sure not to let him go.

Chumley: I agree on Murphy, but I know there are still people around who feel he has value. If he doesnt make it here, he'd have enough value in a trade.

As for non-pitchers I have to think Pedroia is up there too. Certainly Ellsbury is in a league of his own for the OF's, but the prospect of Pedroia at 2b, and Lowry at SS someday isnt that bad!

I saw Murphy play a lot on the Cape the summer before he was drafted and didn't like him then, nor do I know. I loved the Murton pick and was extremely angry when Theo included him in the Nomar deal.

Pedroia is still young, but I'm not sure he's going to be anything more than a serviceable IF. I'd trade him well before trading Lowrie or Jacoby.

Theo loves Jacoby and Lowrie, and will stock up on more collegians this next draft. Guys like Arizona SS Jason Donald, Wake's Matt Antonelli and Clemson's Andy D'Alessio will get a lot of attention from the Red Sox once the high schoolers and pitching phenoms like UNC's Andrew Miller/Daniel Bard and USC's Ian Kennedy are off the board.

Is Pedroia still on track to be the eventual 2nd baseman?

That's certainly the plan, but he would certainly be included in any deal to bring Dontrelle Willis here. I'm not sold on Pedroia's range at 2nd and he seems to have plateaued a bit at Pawtucket in my opinion a la Kelly Shoppach.

It seems like Lowell has been having a great time at Fenway so far. The Monster could work wonders for him.

Youkilis has been a very pleasant surprise so far. I always figured he'd help the team more in a trade, and I didn't think he'd ever play for the Sox. I've been impressed by his defense so far, and, obviously, his ability to get on base.

Moneyballers aren't supposed to be scary, Steve. They strike when you least expect it. :p

The 04 Sox team had Mueller and Millar/Mientkiweicz at the corners and won. Pitching is what you need to win and good pitching makes up for guys like Lowell who I think will hit about .250 this year.

You're right, it could help turn those doubles into wall-ball singles. ;)

What's impressed me most about him is his defense. A guy with the plate vision and discipline is going to get his hits, and often at key times. Jeter doesn't have much pop either, but he seems to come up when needed. Like with the Moneyball philosophy: just get on base without causing an out, however you do it.

Wouldn't you say he's had a limited sample size at AAA? He spent roughly half the year there last year and spent a chunk of that recovering from the wrist injury. This year he has 5 ABs as he's coming back from the ST shoulder strain. I think we need a little more time to make any sort of assessment on DP at AAA.

Sure, like I said, he'll make it and be an every day 2b, but he's not going to be Jeff Kent or Robbie Alomar here. He's Marty Barrett with some speed. Nothing wrong with that.

And if I recall correctly, a Millar walk and a Mueller base hit sent Game 4 into extra innings. Sometimes it's the guys who don't scare you. :D

Papelbon on his entrance music: (http://www.masslive.com/sports/republican/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1145259837199560.xml&coll=1)

"The fans were probably more into my choice of song than I was," Papelbon said. "It's 'Drowning Pool - Let the Bodies Hit the Floor,' or something like that. I'm not really into that stuff; if anybody has another suggestion for a song, send it to my locker."

Dirtdogs suggestion: (http://bostondirtdogs.boston.com/) (scroll down a bit):

"Move aside, and let the man go through. Let the man go through... Some hand is motioning to rise, to rise, to rise... Chump, change, and it's on, super bon bon Super bon bon, Super bon bon." -- Song: Super Bon Bon, Artist: Soul Coughing, Album: Irresistible Bliss

Good luck with that. Seriously, best of luck.

I'll take Timlin over Farnsworth, and Foulke over Sturtze, thanks.
