The purpose of this thread is self-evident... just highlight anything that might be of interest to the board. Could be useful for those games during the 9-5 work day. Live stats are available here: http://www.torino2006.org/ENG/OlympicGames/gare_e_programma/realtime.html
UMD's Pehkonen gets the first goal for Finland, knocking in a rebound with her skate as she crashes the net. OSU's Laaksonen set up the second goal, her 5-on-3 PP shot went wide and deflected around the boards right to Heidi Pelttari, doesn't appear an assist was rewarded.

this might be the better link for finding live stat links:

when a game ends, it disappears from the page I linked before.
3-0 Finland final.

Watched the Sweden v Russia game on the BBC ( Its great they are showing every womens game live or aslive on their interactive digital channel). Sweden came out the easy victors 3-1. The best player being Rooth for Sweden and Martin the Swedish goalie.
Kim Martin it would appear, from the commentator, will be plying her trade at UMD next season. Good work UMD she is a fantastic goalie, (despite the pantomine goal today. Easy shot from way out, rebounds off Martin onto backside of swedish defender and back into the net.) who can forget her playing in Salt lake city 4 years ago, at 14 years old, and almost single handedly taking Sweden to a bronze medal.

8-0 Canada after 2. Italy is working hard though and they are young; maybe a team to build upon for the future.

Way to go, Canada! By beating Italy the way you did, you just signed the death warrant for women's ice hockey in the Olympic games in my opinion!
16-0 and the players are laughing it up and enjoying themselves, trying to pour it on until the end! The most pathetic display of sportsmanship i've ever seen!
2010 will be the last year we see this sport in the Olympics, mark my words!

Italy was only entered in the event because they got a free pass for being host nation. They knew they were going to get blown out in most if not all their games.
Canada can't tell their players to stop playing hard. They have to stay sharp for the rest of their games.
scoring 16 goals means nothing, and affects nothing.

Until they change the rule about goals for and against to determine the home team for the Finals. Canada has to run the score up. USA would do the same thing.

Soapbox, you still have no idea what you are talking about, you just like to create controversy. This will have absolutely no consequences. If you want to look at it that way, look at how the US team poured it on at the end of the game, was there any discussion about that in this thread, absolutely not. You can't fault players for playing hard the entire time, they do not get an opportunity to play in the Olympics very often, and they will play hard no matter what the score is and who the opponent is. I will also echo the sentiments regarding the IOC's policy of seeding, until that changes nothing else will, play until the final buzzer!

Don't agree at all!!
As a european, and an afficianado of Womens hockey, I have watched many World and Olympic games. The Italian team would not have thanked the Canadian team for taking their foot off the pedal.
I have noticed a great increase in the standard of refereeing of the games. The referees are letting the games play the way they should rather than call every little bump and grind on the ice. Well done the stripeys.
I have some team mates in my house for a few beers (after a game) and they have never seen a womans game, and are very impressed with the Canadian team. They will be watching the rest of the games!!!! :)

Couple of phantom calls on the US in their game...I thought.

Agreed. But I have seen a lot worse in a lot of leagues.

7-0 for Canada v Russia after 1.
Note that the referee is from Great Britain. ( I knew we would get to Olympics someway or other :p )

do Brits know anything about hockey? I thought it was only 'football' there. :D

The guy commentating on the US v Germany game for the BBC has a north American accent and can't pronounce 'Ruggiero' and just suggested Natalie Darwitz was in fact Jenny Potter by being married and having a 5 yr old daughter.... so evidently nationality versus knowledge is all open to debate ;)
I must say though, I'm thoroughly impressed the BBC (digital interactive channel) is carrying the game at all :) Fantastic!! I'm watching on UK broadband, alternatively: great to have so many options!

Listen folks......can you hear that......it's TAPS being played for women's olympic hockey! If you listen really hard, you might even be able to hear the undertaker pounding the first few nails into the coffin too....
12-0 today and laughing it up and having a grand old time PADDING their PERSONAL STATS! They got to go all out, you know, so every player on the tournamnet all star team is Canadian!
Name the last time the US team blew someone away like this? 10-0 against Germany in 2002 and Japan 10-0 in 1998 are the highest in recent years! You would have to go back to 1992 to find a "run-up" score like this!
The only thing I dislike more than Coach Ben Smith is Team Canada and their villanous, who cares, attitudes!
That team is absolutely pathetic in the sportsmanship aspect and look out for their own well being instead of the sport in general! If this sport is retracted from the games, there is nobody to blame but the Canadians!
