Approx 1200 or more fans had the experience today of watching the USA's Olympic team tune up at the Kenyon Arena at Middlebury College. What an exhibition of hockey by both teams. Obviusly the USA team was outsized by a long shot and somewhat outplayed at times. The final score ended up 8 to 6 in favor of the Glades Midget team. Now then I don't understand for the life of me why at this level of hockey this age group is called "midgets". Maybe in little boy hockey maybe but 16 - 18 years old, come on. The youngest kid on the team is almost 17 standing 6'3'' without skates coming in at 195lbs. D-I size already. My point is this Olympic team had some great moments in this game against an obvious stronger team. All that aside I feel this team is capable of taking the USA into the medal rounds in Feb in Italy. ;)
For a Monday (Holiday mind you) the crowd was awesome. The only charge for admission was "bring a non-perishable" food item. Two pick-up trucks were used to cart away the booty after the game. Also in attendance were tomorrow nights combatants. #1 Middlebury and #2 University St. Thomas womens hockey teams. What a couple of days at the Kenyon this week.
After the game ended the tunnel under the stands where the locker rooms are was packed with kids and adults seeking autographs from the USA players. All the players accomadated all that waited. That shows alot of class especially after 60 minutes of hard fought and fast paced hockey. The little kids were so impressed and the girls were very personable with all the kids as well. A fantastic end to a great afternoon of hockey. :D
The Glades were very impressed with the size of the crowd and the fact that they showcase their abilities in such a forum. These boys played a very solid game and I don't think they were intimidated one bit. A very good friend of mine's son plays on the Glades. He's the player I was referring to above. He scored a second period goal to make it 3-1 game. I told his dad during the game should USA go on to win the Gold and todays starting goalie is in the Gold Medal game Ben can say "Hey, I scored on her!'
A fun time had by all. :) :) Now on to tomorrows battle of #1 and #2 in the country D-III level. Can't wait. ;) :D
