It has been brought to my attention that NBC is conducting an online poll to see which winter games are of the most interest to audiences. Shockingly, with over 100,000 votes cast thus far, curling tops the poll by a landslide:eek: Hockey is a mere 2% :( Other winter sports are encouraging their board members to get the word out to boost their numbers -- Let's get these numbers up for hockey too! Here is the link, the poll is on the side. I have been told every household can vote 3 times.

Curling with 38,000 plus votes? Yikes all of Scotland, Canada and Wisconsin must have voted to get that kind of tabulation.

Also, if you select "Athlete Biographies" and then "Hockey" you'll find bios for Krissy Wendell, Angela Ruggiero, Jenny Potter...and Cammi Granato. Oops.

Someone should consider posting this over in the men's section also.
We should also see if we can get these threads pinned at top to make sure everyone notices and votes.

Wow its going to be exciting curling and cross country sking two top vote getters.
What worries me is who they will have as an analyst covering the games. They really need someone who knows the game, who knows the players and their tendancies, who will garner attention, and who can articulate their knowledge and capture the audience.
To my mind the best candidate for that job is the former US captain, and the face of women's hockey in the United States, Cammi Granato.

The auditions were held last spring. AJ Mleczko will be the analyst. She'll do fine. And you can blame me if she doesn't since her only practice has been with me.
Perhaps curling has such a big lead is because they promote the voting on their site.
Also maybe all those old retired people will be able to watch during the morning and afternoon while the rest of the "hockey" people are at work.

you can vote as often as you like. you all know what to do.
I wondered why Snowboarding didn't have even a single vote -- there isn't a button to vote for Snowboarding. This is not a scientific poll.

That is great news! IMHO it is important to have an analyst (rather than a color person) that can concisely break down plays and explain the finer points of the game in a way that a casual fan can understand and those "in the know" can still come away feeling enlightened. Too often you end up with color people who offer up superfical info that doesn't really pertain to specific action on the ice.
Take Boston Bruins tv games for instance. A few years ago somebody thought it would be a good idea to have Phil Esposito as the color man. Big mistake. While Phil was a great player, and is quite a character, he detracted from the broadcast by being colorful rather than informative. Most of the time he couldn't prononce the names of Europeans, and would joke about that rather than discussing the action being shown on the replay.
Over the past several years the Bruins have had Andy Brickley (and Bob Beers on the radio) as the analyst and he is articulate, concise, and insightful with his commentary. Listening to Brickley and watching a replay you pick up so much of the little things that make the difference between being a plus, or a minus for a shift, a period, or the game.
Ultimately I think that translates into a better viewing experience and the liklihood that people will continue to watch. And depending on the time slot the Olympic games get, good coverage could mean another surge in interest in the women's side of the sport and another large influx of young girls.

There used to be a series of TV commercials about Bo Jackson that featured Bo in a number of different sports with the tag line "Bo knows ______" and you filled in the sport.
Well, AJ knows hockey and she will be great. I've heard her do a couple of broadcasts with Brian and she will be awesome. Take it to the bank.
Speaking of curling, there is a funny scene in the movie "Help" that involves curling. My first intro to the sport. Remembering John Lennon's death this week prompted this last comment. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

NBC actually shot the male vs female Curling match that aired Sunday from Duluth, at the Curling Club. I still don't exactly understang the game so I'll stick to HOCKEY. Even if it's at 3 am I'm gonna see as much of the games as possible.

It's 7am and -3 degrees, brrrrrrrrrrr. There are now over 41,300 votes for ice hockey, second only to curling at 42,500 plus. I should think ice hockey will overtake curling this am. If any college hockey players read this you may want to spread the word to your other teammates about voting. the site as previously mentioned is wnbc.com. Everyone keep up the good work on getting the word out. :)
