The ECAC just got a whole lot more entertaining with St. Anselm's overtime win against Manhattanville.
The game looked like it wouldn't be that close in the first period, with St. Anselm playing tentatively and M'ville pouncing on three defensive errors to end the period up 3-0.
The St. A coach must have said something pretty motivating in the locker room after period 1, as his team then limited M'ville to 1 shot in the second period, and only a total of five shots for the rest of the game, including overtime.
Surprisingly, M'ville looked like the second year program as St. A's, still down 3-0, applied pressure midway through the third period. After St. A's first goal, M'ville really didn't appear to have any "poise" left and St. A looked to be better conditioned. Two more power play goals for the Hawks and the outcome of overtime was predictable based on M'ville body language.
The loss of Cherie Stewart certainly leaves a big gap for M'ville, but a lot of credit goes to St. A's for elevating a young program and being very competitive.
If NEC and RIT continue to improve, the whole complexion of the league will have changed and will be a lot more fun to follow.

I was noticing the attendance in central NH this weekend for the NEC and St A's games and each school drew between 700 and 800 fans for the weekend. These are great numbers compared to previous years.

I like the idea of the travel partners this year. It definately creates a different strategy for preparation for the team. I'd like to think that M-ville having to play 2 decent teams on consecutive nights had something to do with their performance. Also, it reduces the chippy play that used to occur during the second game of the weekend as you either got sick of your opponent or got frustrated. It looks like, from the penalties, the RIT-USM game had a little of the old flavor. :)

I disagree and think the 2-game series is in the best interests of the student athletes,.....less travel and more down time to catch up with school work.....not to mention it is more cost effective for the athletic departments,.....as far as chippy play the 2nd night?, well let me make a suggestion that with women, game 2 could be played 5 years later and you'd have the same potential problems; they just don't forget,.....
