Upside for Plattsbugh - WOW, 111 shots... I wonder if collegehockeystats can handle that...

In the "for what it's worth department": 6 of the 11 goals in the Plattsburgh/Chatham game on Saturday were Power Play goals. (5 for Plattsburgh, 1 for Chatham)

I feel so bad for her, she loved the school till she saw them play last year, and I told her that they were actively recruiting and it had to be better this year. It's the perfect school for her, but I know this has her devastated. Of course, having to play such a good team first thing out of the gate doesnt' help. Oh well, I keep reminding her, she's playing DIII hockey, and that's a very good thing to be proud of. No matter what level you play, somebody is at the bottom, even in the olympics.

From the local rag: The Cardinals were credited with 111 shots, although Houle said he thought the scorekeeper might have been a little generous.
Is Chatham still an all women's college?

I feel for you and also feel for the Chatham program as for years they have been saying that they are actively recruiting but that is only part of the problem. I had a scoop on one of the candidates that they had in there for the head coaching position and know him from the area that we play in. He currently is a part time coach at a local college that has an ACHA team that could easily compete with NCAA Men's Div. III teams or at least the bottom half of the NCAA Div. III but would be competitive. Needless to say to see what he has done with the local program here is remarkable, My daughter and I saw them play last weekend and it is just an excellent show they put on.
I have heard from reliable sources in the Chatham area and perhaps even at the rink that they play out of, that the problem is not only recruiting but the coaches that they have hired have little to no experience other than liking the game or teaching basic skills and this goes on into the athletic department as well a ton of losing programs across the board. There is no one there teaching these kids how to play the game. I am glad that they overlooked this coach as I believe his team is at 8-0 and he is actually helping our daughter get looked at by Prep schools and it is a shame for Chatham because in our area I know he had about 12 girls lined up ready to go with him because of the clinics he does for the local teams.
Who knows maybe Plattsburgh State is just a tremendous team but if you were a coach on the college scene you should have known that and prepared for it. 111 shots in a game is ridiculous. It looks like not much has changed. Good Luck Chatham!!! Hopefully you daughter can still transfer before she plays in anymore game so she doesn't lose anymore eligibility?

ok, so the cougars were pummeled by the very best in the west, big surprise!i hope they'll learn much from the experience and move on. as far as chatham's "actively recruiting", well, imho, no competitive player would consider signing on given the program's history. too soon to tell whether any have. if, in scillacc's words, it's the best school for his/her daughter, then that's all that should matter.

I think goodsport is in the right direction -- if a player likes a school then that should be the bottom line - win or lose the important thing they will remember is that they got to participate and compete at the D3 level - most individuals who love the college game and watch this site or even more importantly have daughters who play, will probably not remember their scores 5 years from now- in fact, most of first year players will probably not care what the scores were 4 years ago because they will hopefully have earned their degree -- for the most part they will however remember their overall team accomplishments -- but most importantly, the fact they have earned the degree and the many relationships that they have nurtured over the years at the school attended I would think will be first and foremost on their mind while they drive or fly home - -- at the end of the day - I don't think individual stats is anything that any one player will get hung up about - so who needs to win even 8-0?

Of course the education (and degree) is why a player goes to college, but I think you might be underestimating the effect that four years of losing by this sort of margin can have on an athlete.
(IMHO) Most of the positive values learned from team sports are lost on teams that for whatever reasons are unable to truly compete - at either end of the spectrum. Schools that are not able to present competitive team should withdraw (or advance) to a level that they can compete in (not win or lose but at least be "in" most games - in ice hockey shot ratios are a pretty good indicator with greater than 4:1 considered non-competition). Remaining at a "Varsity" level benefits no one but the institution that gets to claim to have that sport at a Varsity level without committing the required time and or money necessary to compete.

So if the lesser teams drop out of the varsity levels, then who is going to be at the bottom? Will you be happy then? Maybe as a parent, I am glad my daughter IS playing at the varsity level because she has to maintain her grades and we all know she has the school backing her.
Frankly.... how many women are going to continue to play truly competitive hockey after college? I still play, at 48 years old, but it's in addition to my life raising 4 kids alone, working full time and enjoying life. We know she's not olympic material and that's fine. I am sure that when she's giving birth, or buying her first house, or graduating with a degree, she's not going to give a **** what her stats were.

As for playing competitive hockey after college - likely not, but definately there will be the opportunity to play or coach. Having seen players lose interest in a sport they once loved due to harsh playing experiences (like what I am sure Chatham is facing) I would hope a program would be doing everything to avoid this from happening.
Dropping from Varsity is not the only option - How about the school doing what ever it takes to recruit the players they need to compete? Other schools have done it - why can't Chatham (or any of the other non competitors)?
This is Chatham's 4th season ,third coach and every year there is a claim that next season will be better but yet a record of 0-46 to date. I am not suggesting to give up on the team, nor to simply blame the head coach, but to hold the school to the expectation of doing what is nessesary to improving to the point where they can compete. If that is not possible then re-evaluate where they currently play and look for some where they can play at a healthy competitive level.
