Word out of New Prague, MN is that JK will head east in the fall of 2007. :)
Let's hope her teammate feels differently the following year. ;)
Ya want her initials too?

I heard she wants to be part of the Big Green, a Tiger or ??? Can't think of the 3rd. We'll see what KA can do in a years time. How do these two do at the National Festivals?

KA did quite well in the summer of '05, JK didn't do much this past summer if I recall correctly. I'd have to go back and check for more detail regarding other camps for each.
Brooky, all knowing one; what is the word on the Minny CODP? What are your thoughts on the program, and how is it viewed by the girls?

Hux -- I can make no claim to being well informed on the CODP. My attention span pretty much begins and ends with the high school season start / finish. That said, some general details, I've heard nothing but good / positive things...some even qualifying as raves about Jack Blatherwick and the CODP. Both are very highly regarded locally. Same goes for his staff which usually includes an accomplished bunch of past participants, many of whom have made their mark on collegiate hockey teams both D-I & D-III. Many familiar names among them including some who've gone on to national and olympic teams. I'd consider them some of the finest mentors a young player could have where hopes of progressing to collegiate hockey (and perhaps even to national teams) are the goal(s). That's pretty much the consensus of those I've heard from. The good reviews I hear come from players, a few coaches and parents of players.
There's an abundance of camps available in the state but I myself believe the CODP is among the best...maybe the premier organization. If one looks at past participants and what they've gone on to achieve I think it's hard to argue with this. Obviously the general talent level of many participants has been exceptional...which helps. ;)
I don't know anything specific about the kind of training involved, just that many consider it excellent...and pretty intense, or rigorous. They have a decent website that provides some info. There is also a few posters who stop in here from time to time who are far more knowledgeable than I. Maybe they can offer some insight.
There may be detractors, but out of the participants, player parents and coaches I've spoken with I've never encountered any. If I were a parent I'd definitely want my kid involved.

Posters mnhock, MNhockeyfan09 & ghshockeyfan would be able to offer much more in depth insight.
If my kid were a goalie I'd be looking real hard at one of Doug Woog's or Robb Stauber's camps.

Jack Blatherwick is considered an EXPERT on conditioning, he has written many articles on the subject. Marci Bydlon is a tireless coach works to
better her players, she is a coach for the MN Thoroughbreds team that produces and has produced many college level players.
The entire staff including Len Vannelli, Krissy Wendell and Slomo certain appear to be bringing back the credibility that the program needs. There were doubts that were circling about the program the last two years, I think because of funding, cost and who was running it?.
Defiantly not for the weak at heart, Marci won't allow that.
The girls do like the it, because it shows results
Good Program for players that want to make it to the next level!
I had a long talk with Dr. Blatherwick about what it took for him and Herb Brooks to get the approval and funding to get it off the ground. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to talk about the operational details.
So, to that end...How many girls do they have on the ice at one time. I see that they have 100 players and 20 goalies. How many separate sessions do they run each day? Do they operate out of one rink?

They skate out of Highland (south) and the Superrink (north) and they usually have a advanced team, older girls that have been in the program for a couple of years. Not sure on the size of the groups or how many are on the ice at one time.
For more acurate information contact Marci or Jack.
The only downside that I have heard regarding the program is that they did not renew the satellite program in Moorhead. This was a huge surprise to the people running it in Moorhead as well as a huge disappointment to the girls who had been participating. The program was well run and well attended so it is unclear why it was not renewed. Without another site in the area to replace it~the girls were denied this great opportunity as traveling to the Metro to participate is unrealistic for the majority of the girls. Hopefully they will get a new northern site for the program if they were unhappy with some aspect of the Moorhead program.

It appears they have plans for a northern site at the Cloquet Rec Center planned for summer '07. Unfortunately still a considerable haul from the Moorhead / western Minnesota area.
The Cloquet program is not new, not sure how many years in existence. There used be both a Moorhead and Cloquet program. I have heard good things about the Cloquet program but distance again is a significant barrier for the girls in the Northwestern area of the state. I had heard rumors about one in Thief River Falls possibly being started but that was awhile ago.

About CODP-- the weekday training sessions average about 20 girls with 3-4 coaches. They spend 1:15 on the ice and then 1:00 of dryland (slideboards, Russian boxes, other intense stuff) twice per week. Then on Sundays Marci and 3 or 4 assistants coach constant motion 4-on-4 scrimmages (and there are usually only 10-12 on a team) for 45 minutes after a 45-minute drill session (also intense, er, rigorous). Midway thru the program they host a 16-team festival with U16 and U19 teams from all over the country--I think 2 of the CODP teams were U19 and about 6 or 8 were U16. They invite college coaches to attend.
The point of the CODP program is to get girls to learn to how to train--hoping they take the summer training and expand it into a year-round routine. The best way for it to 'take' with the girls is for them to see drastic improvement in their acceleration and overall speed and endurance over the course of the summer. I know with my daughter her speed and acceleration increased noticeably in these 9 weeks, believe it or not. It made her want to keep up the training and I even had to build a slideboard for at home. And Laura Slominski was her head coach for the weekday training and her top assistant was Kris Scholz. How can it get better than this?

Thanks for the replies.
So, I take it that there are daily sessions, with off ice twice a week, and that the 100 players and 20 goalies are broken down into groups with different ice times during the day. Correct?
Thanks,
Hux

I think there were at least 8 different daily sessions this summer and the total amount of players was closer to 150. They practiced at Highland and at New Hope arenas. Some were Mon/Wed, some Tues/Thurs.

Just a quick heads up...tourney down at SSM this weekend. If you're in the area a chance to see some future stars in action.

Yep, Fox Sports is gonna be here in Cloquet for that game, they're trying this year, to do the biggest classic rivalries a few times, plus 4 games of the Schwan's Cup (boys). I don't think of the 18 games they've scheduled, there's a single girls game. The schedule (http://msn.foxsports.com/story/6077452) doesn't mention boys/girls so for now assume they're only showing boys hockey.

Watching Fox last week or so when they announced the scheduled games to be broadcast. I'm pretty sure they didn't mention or include any girls games.
If they or anyone else were to ever broadcast girls high school hockey games (outside of state tourney games) I'd recommend some of the section playoff games. I've seen a bunch of very exciting / outstanding games in sections. Many as good and better than state tournament games. The kind of games quite capable of growing interest in the sport.
...but not holding my breath.
