I guess we should add though, that if anybody needs a prostitute, this would be a good area to go.

I was once stopped at a redlight down there around midnight. There are a couple people standing on the corner. The guy in the car next to me honks his horn, the girl shakes her head yes. She proceeds to get in the car with him and they leave...

No kidding, you can get yourself killed there. I worked at the Domino's on Lake/Chicago when I was between my sophomore and junior years of college.

If you've got some money, go choke down a huge steak at Manny's downtown. Great steaks.

I live in Highland Park too, and know the McCafferty boys.

Often see 'em after a Nooky Supreme. ;)

I like that idea.

Highland Park came up in a thread a couple of months ago. I was surprised at the number of posters that reside in this area.

Then it's settled.

We do a spring/summer get-together for all St. Paulites.

But not the Mac-Grovelanders. :)

I haven't yet had the chocolate cake at Cecil's, now I know.

I would like to add the cavEAT (get it?) that I have not lived the Twin Cities since 1993. On the (joyous, but sadly far too infrequent) times I have had the opportunity to return for a visit I have not had the distinct privilege of dining at Cecil's. So, should the aforementioned chocolate cake no longer live up to my doubtlessly amalgamated memory, please do not wish me harm. I may be an adult now, but I'm still a little St. Paulite boy at heart. Not saying it WASN'T, or COULDN'T BE as great as I remember it. Just that I can't honestly vouch for it STILL BEING so.

But if the reuben and chicken noodle soup (and Dr. Browns' Black Cherry soda) aren't still amazing, I might declare the end of the world to be close at hand.

one other Highland reco:

If Vina is still there, they had the BEST beef and potato dish I've ever had.

I'm a big fan of their coleslaw...

this is getting a little far afield from Highland Park, (but it's only about a 10 minute drive down University from the U campus) but the Russian Tea House is a fun and unique experience. The meat piroshkis are AWESOME. you used to be able to buy them by the dozen and we froze them for enjoyment at a later date. Very cool place.

Places to hit.

Andy's Garage--great burgers--voted best the TC a few times. Just east of the "U" on University and fairview Ave.'s. It is actually set in an old car repair garage.

Cossetta's (authentic Italian market and Resteraunt), Patrick McGovern's, and Tom Reid's Hockey Pub (lots of great hockey memorabilia) on West 7th St. are all places to hit that are right near the Xcel Center.

Red Savoy Inn--(Great New York style pizza) a little further east on West 7th St. in St. Paul

Sally's and Bullwinkle's for drinking--Sally's has great chili too.

hope that helps.

Where shall we hold this, USCHO St. Paulites that are not Mac-Grove Area residents, gathering? Should we hold it at a place in Mac-Grove?!?!

If you are visiting, there is no excuse not to go to Town Hall at 7 corners. Great place, best beer around (by far).

These have already been mentioned but they are worth repeating.

If you are near Mariucci then Al's Breakfast is a MUST. Be prepared to stand for a while though.

Not near where you are staying, but Red's Savoy Inn on 7th in St Paul has the best pizza in the Twin Cities hands down. While in this area you can also hit the Gopher bar (on 7th) for coney's and beer. Alary's (on 7th) for the bartenders. Stroll by the X, and head up the hill to Tavern on Grand for some Walleye fingers.

Enjoy.
