If you want to bar hop on Friday or Saturday night, there is a large selection of bars all within walking distance in the Warehouse District (http://www.mplswarehouse.com/) in Downtown Minneapolis.

Dave's isn't bad & Rudolphs is the most overrated joint IMHO.

Agree with you on Rudolph's... Was there during the last FF in St. Paul and was sorely disappointed.

Still, I *am* looking forward to Al's for breakfast when I'm out for the regionals.

BTW, how is either Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery or Cafe Twenty-Eight?

The area around the Gasthof is one of my favorite areas to go out, its actually a very blue collar mostly residential area but there are at least a dozen bars w/in a mile. Go one block east of University ave to 4th St NE and head N or S and you will come across a local bar at least every other block. From Mayslak's on the south to Jimmy's on the north, 4th St NE has 4-5 bars in a 10 block stretch. Or, go north on University a few blocks to the corner of Lowry, Stasiu's is on the NW corner of the intersection, stop in for one and then head West on Lowry 6 blocks to Tony Jaro's and have a Greenie (don't have more than two if you have already been drinking, you want to be able to get home). After a Greenie head south on Marshall Street (Tony Jaro's is on the corner of Lowry and Marshall) and you'll come across another 5-6 bars as you head south.

Roam around the Warehouse District in Minneapolis (near the Target Center on 1st Ave) and you're bound to find someplace that appeals to your taste's. Again, less than 10 minutes from the UofM Campus and this area tends to be more expensive but more trendy than the above neighborhood bars.

Good luck!

Ahh, good ol Nordeast!! My backyard. There are also two newer bars in the area. The NE Palace which is one block east of Stasius(on Lowry and 4th St) and Psycho Suzies(right across Marshall from Tony Jaros). They are both a ton of fun. I'd actually suggest them before Stasius and Jimmy's. Anyways, have a good time in our fair city!!

MMMMM, Mayslak's! Roast Beef! Do they still do the lunch thing? I remember (20 years ago) standing outside in a long line, waiting for my sammich, with a bloody mary in my hand.

Best Roast Beast Ever!!!!

As the slogan says..."Nobody Beats Mayslack's Meat!!"

Market appears to have gone downhill badly of late. I'd recommend Famous Dave's or Rudolf's well ahead of Market.

Another one not far from the Ooch is O'Brien's Decoy (Great BBQ). Take 4th Street from Ooch to Hennepin, right on Hennepin to big curve, you can't miss it. O'Briens is across from Legends, another fun bar.

Cafe Twenty-Eight is about a block from my house. It's not really my kind of place. Too trendy and expensive. The food is decent but nothing special. The place is tiny and usually full of yuppies.

You smell like garlic for two days after a trip to Mayslack's. But it's worth it.

As far as clubs go, Spin is really trendy. For a "Spin Lite" the Barfly (by Shinder's in downtown, I think on Hennepin) is pretty cool. I normally hate clubs, but I don't mind the Barfly at all.

Expect drinks in any downtown club to run about $5-$8 for a good mixed drink, of decent quality (re: not the house pour).

For non-clubby places, The Lodge (across from Murray's on 5th, I believe) is crowded, but has live music often. First Ave is a must, if only for the atmosphere/landmark aura.

Avoid: The Drink. At all costs. Unless you want to be part of an Ambercrombie catalog.

Another place I really like is Pepito's (http://www.pepitos.net/). Best Mexican in town IMHO. Their ribs are also very good, Way better than Dave's or Rudolfs IMHO.

If you or someone you know has a car, and feel like an adventure, head north on Highway 94, to St Michael (about 45 minutes away) and go to The Corner Bar. The main part of the bar area is about 40 feet by about 20 feet (including the bar), and it rules. Here's the secret: if you order the same mixed drink all night, they get cheaper as the night goes on.

Oh, The Corner Bar, how I heart thee. I need to go back soon. :)

PS: The men's bathroom is small. If there is a person using the urinal, it is difficult, if not darn near impossible, to use the stall. I don't even know if it could pass today's codes. :D

Let's not forget the pepper martinis. :D

The Nook on Randolph and Hamline in St. Paul is supposed to have great burgers. It's right across the street from the legendery Cretin-Derhm Hall Baseball Field.

Also, down by my place on Cleveland, just north of Ford Parkway is the Highland Grill. Also, Cecil's, if you're of the Jewish faith. Good reuben's and great coleslaw. Cecil's is just up Cleveland about 2 blocks from the Highland Grill. They also just opened the Longfellow Grill on East Lake and West River Parkway. Just across the bridge from St. Paul. (Lake Street and Marshall are same street. Lake is Minneapolis and Marshall in St. Paul)

I also like the Pizza Shack down on East Lake and 17th or Bloomington...Not exactly the best area of Minneapolis though. Lake and Hiawatha is kind of the center of the bad area...The further you go in either direction on Lake, the better you get.

*sigh* my old 'hood (I grew up on Edgcumbe and Highland) My GRANDMOTHER was a first-name-basis regular at the Nook for many years. That place is an institution. Didn't they name the CDH baseball field after a certain graduate who went on to play in Milwaukee, Toronto and Minnesota?

Highland Grill, post-makeover is a good place with a surprisingly good beer menu. Also a good breakfast option.

I can't believe you talked about Cecil's without mentioning the chocolate cake! That's essentially libel as far as I'm concerned! ;)

Unfortunately, I can't see a visitor stumbling into Highland Park on a weekend trip to Mpls. It's not Manhattan, but there's more than enough in Minneapolis to keep someone busy (or at least plied with adult beverages and junk food).

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but the best Chinese food this side of Shanghai is right on campus at the Village Wok. It's across from the Radisson on Washington. If you go, you must try the whole Crispy Fish. Absolutely incredible. If you're of the vegetarian persuasion, the Eggplant with Spicy Black Bean Sauce can't be beat.

This is a campus institution and has been voted Best Chinese food in the metro area for something like the last 20 years.

Zudnic - I thought for sure you'd send to Austin for the Spam Museum! :)
if you do have some time to kill in the Twin Cities the Spam Museum can not be beat for campy humor. Except maybe Cereal City USA in Battle Creek, Mich.

There's also a Mediterranean place in NE Minneapolis where you can get a lot of good food for pretty cheap. It's like Holy Land or something like that. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Holy Land...awesome. For a super duper treat, get some of the double cream feta, some crackers and go nuts...honestly, one of the finest food experiences I've ever had, that.

No kidding, you can get yourself killed there. I worked at the Domino's on Lake/Chicago when I was between my sophomore and junior years of college.

If you've got some money, go choke down a huge steak at Manny's downtown. Great steaks.

I've only lived in Highland for about 8 months...I really like the area. My grandfather lived right behind McCafferty's Liquor store on James. I haven't yet had the chocolate cake at Cecil's, now I know. I have also yet to go to the Nook.

If anybody's in town on Thursday, Tiffany's on Ford Parkway (Just east of Cleveland) has $7 all you care to drink taps.
