Any must-try regional foods (a la wings in Buffalo)?
Walleye, maybe? Anything with wild rice. It's a bit of a trek down Cedar Ave, but a Jucy Lucy (that is spelled correctly) at Matt's Bar is a local favorite (won Twin Cities best burger multiple times)

Cedar-Riverside (near the coke towers) and The Metrodump (http://www.metrotransit.org/rail/index.asp) are as close as it gets.
you mean the Ghetto in the sky? :D
I work downtown, but have only taken the train to the mexican joint right outside of downtown. wouldn't it have made sense to run the train through the campus?

Any must-try regional foods (a la wings in Buffalo)? If you're really game, try Scandanavian staples lefse (white potato-based bread, doused with butter and sugar to give it any semblance of flavor) or lutefish-- gelatinous fish. Available @ Ingebretsen's on Lake Street and/or certain import food stores.
A better fish choice is walleye... Tavern on Grand in St. Paul is probably the "signature" restaurant serving it... T on Grand is also on the neat Grand Ave. portion of St. Paul, one block off mansions of Summit Ave. Lots of good food/drink/funky shops in Grand Avenue stretch.

Make sure to take a very large bite when you first dig in to eat it. :D

Another version is available @ the 5-8 Club, which is on the way from airport to downtown at the NW interchange of Crosstown (Hwy. 62) and Cedar Ave. (Hwy. 77) at 58th St. The 5-8 is another Minnesota novelty known as a "3-2" beer joint. (License only allows sale of beer with no greater than 3.2% ETOH.)

I *think* the next phase will be the University Ave corridor from the Capital to somewhere in dntwn Mpls where they could hook the lines.
Speaking of Matt's, I went to the Gopher Bar for lunch.
Waitress to cook while taking our order, "Shut the f up, I'm taking an order here." You can't pay for ambiance like that just anywhere!! :D

I would suggest that too, but the waitresses give you directions if you've never eaten one before, so most mouth burnings will be avoided.
and, oh yeah, Fear the Cheese! (C)

If it's spelled correctly, it's a shameless imposter ;) also (c)
Has anyone mentioned Market BBQ in downtown Minneapolis? I don't think so. Great BBQ joint

I've always been a big fan of the Big 10 right there in Stadium Village. Great subs. Or you really can't go wrong with any of the suggestions given so far.

Market appears to have gone downhill badly of late. I'd recommend Famous Dave's or Rudolf's well ahead of Market.

Really? They received a great review in Mpls-St.-St. Paul last month.
I sure hope you're wrong, one of my favorite places.

My bro went there for his birthday with the rest of my family in December (I didn't make the trek from Duluth) and seemed to enjoy it just as much as any previous visits the last few years.

Might have been a couple of out of character incidents (different days/times)for myself and a co-worker. Both had terrible service at lunch time and surly managers who refused to do anything about it (no offer to comp anything after complaints).

They were voted the 3rd best BBQ after Famous Daves and Rudolf's.

Dave's isn't bad & Rudolphs is the most overrated joint IMHO.

For those looking for the best pizza in either town, it's worth the short drive to St. Paul. On 7th St., just on the eastern edge of downtown you'll find Red's Savoy. Great ambiance, too.
Just don't sit by the front door...

The Nook on Randolph and Hamline in St. Paul is supposed to have great burgers. It's right across the street from the legendery Cretin-Derhm Hall Baseball Field.
Also, down by my place on Cleveland, just north of Ford Parkway is the Highland Grill. Also, Cecil's, if you're of the Jewish faith. Good reuben's and great coleslaw. Cecil's is just up Cleveland about 2 blocks from the Highland Grill. They also just opened the Longfellow Grill on East Lake and West River Parkway. Just across the bridge from St. Paul. (Lake Street and Marshall are same street. Lake is Minneapolis and Marshall in St. Paul)
I also like the Pizza Shack down on East Lake and 17th or Bloomington...Not exactly the best area of Minneapolis though. Lake and Hiawatha is kind of the center of the bad area...The further you go in either direction on Lake, the better you get.

The Pizza Shack rocks. Best pizza in town.
