i think i am goign to change my prediction
gustavus 4-3, and 5-3 tomorrow. they have too much speed and firepower, however must get solid goaltending and stay out of the box. st thomas can be explosive on the pp...

I went in the training room last night after the game. There were quite a few players getting ice, wraps, etc. That was one physical game.
Tonight promises more of the same. The Gusties are after a resord. The Toms are after respect and some revenge too, It'll be at their place, so the arena will be hot tonight.
I'll be there - yelling for the Gusties!!

was at the game tonight. Gustavus came out pretty flat and didn't really get anything going until the third period. Tommies were buzzing more than last night, but also had many more bounces and many more calls going their way (I'm not usually one to complain about refs, but the officiating seemed a bit lopsided in the tommies favor). Overall, not as entertaining a game as last night, however it got more exciting towards the end. Thought GAC was going to tie it up, but again, the bounces just weren't going their way. Makes for an exciting match up in the championship should both teams make it there. Should that happen, I'm going to have to go with GAC. The were definitely off their game tonight, and still only lost by one, and I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't be up for the conference championship, especially since it'll be on their ice. The winner will likely play point in the play in game for nationals, which if last years GAC/Point game was any indication, will be another barn burner. Overall, some great hockey this weekend...nice job to both teams.

Well the game had many of the aspects that I thought that it would. The Tommies were VERY physical and as pointer_pride82 pointed out, the officiating was lopsided. Unlike many fans, I have generally been pretty pleased with the officials this year, but last night was very unfortunate.
GAC did come out flat. To the Gusties, I think that the game was meaningless - they had already won the conference. But the Toms were there to play and that was the difference. They also had a large and vocal crowd.
I agree that there will probably be a rematch. In that one, I'm sure that both teams will go all out. See you there! :)

I hardly think the Gusties thought the game was meaningless. This was their opportunity to set a record for the only perfect season in MIAC conference play. A loss also hurts them in the national scene should something happen (a loss) in the MIAC playoffs. They may have put too much pressure on themselves, thus they didn't have the free going speed which they normally do. It was unfortunate referees had some say, but no blame can be put on them, you never want to rely on the officials to have a flawless game.

You're right of course, Imafan, the game wasn't meaningless. I do think that it was maybe anticlimactic to some of the girls, after the big win the night before. That may be why they were flat. Or maybe it was one of those things - sometimes teams simply go flat. In any case, I'm sure that they'll be really up for the next meeting with the Tommies, and I predict that there will be one.
See you at the game! :)

How can you say the refs gave St. Thomas the game? If you were to look at the boxscore, you would notice that Gustavus was given less penalties AND the Tommies were given a penalty in the finall 2 minutes. St. Thomas won the game fair and square and are itching to get them in the finals, should they both make it.
Added note: St. Thomas was playing Saturday night without one of their top forwards and a top defenseman, and STILL won. Bring both of them back with an added boost of confidence for the team, I think Gustavus might have some problems.

Gustavus is an unstoppable team. Their whole top line is all conference, possibly all-american and they have 2 all conference defenders. That means in PP and PK they are easily the best team in the conference. The second St. Thomas game was a let down game. Last time I checked, SECOND PLACE does NOT win conference and are the first losers. If St. Thomas gets lucky and somehow ends up with the Gusties in the Conference tourney championship game, they'll get killed.

I don't think anyone was saying that the refs 'gave' the tommies the game (at least that isn't what I meant to imply). I was just noting that it appeared lopsided when watching the game (ie: the gusties were called for some obstructions/take downs that the tommies got away with), however you don't win many games scoring only one goal, and that is ultimately the reason why the gusties lost.

Understood on the refs issue. Misunderstanding
But as for Gustavus being unstoppable? I guess they didn't seem all that unstoppable in their 5-1 loss to Point. St. Thomas's top line is also all-conference. I can live with them being close and that the title game is going to be a thrill, but with Gustavus being unstoppable and KILLING them? No one kills anyone in the play-offs. Especially not teams like those.

You say Gustavus is above and beyond everyone else in PP and PK. You obviously haven't looked at stats, Gustavus is 3rd in Powerplay percentage and 3rd overall in combined special teams. If you're going to make a statement like that, back it up!

I agree with 'imafan'. I think Gustavus has a GREAT team this year that has an excellent chance to go all the way. HOWEVER, making statements like those that 'superfan' made only makes the team they are rooting for (in this case, gac) look bad, and the team doesn't deserve that - they likely know that they will need to show up this weekend and play a great game to come out with a win. I think that should both teams make it to the finals, it will be an awesome (and close) game, and I hope GAC comes out on top, but as this weekend showed, they will have to work for it.

I've seen St. Thomas. Not much about St. thomas impressed me. They had 2 or 3 forwards that could produce some but that was about it. Oh and if you want stats I have some for you. 51, 44, 43, 43. Those are point totals by peterson, stypkowski, crandall, and doyle respectively according to collegehockeystats.net. 33, 31, 28, 25. Those are the top 4 for st. thomas. Oh and gustavus' 5th highest is at 32. Not that GAC's #6 point scorer needs to be mentioned but she iis at 25. Gustavus has 5 of the top 10 goal scorers. St. Thomas 2. GAC also has 4 of the top five assist leaders. St. Thomas 0. So if GAC shares the puck, they can put up a lot of points. As for the PP, 2 of the top 3 point leades. St Thomas another 0. PP goals GAC 2 of the top 3. St thomas 1. PK time. Short handed points GAC 3 in the top 5. St thomas goose egg. SH goals GAC has 1 in the lead and 2 more tied for third. St thomas scroll down to find em. GAC is the leader in scoring defense and offense in the MIAC. GAC is the leader in PK% and have the same amount of PP goals as St. Thomas. They are # 1 in "net" rating for special teams. And the.......SURPRISE leader in goals for and goals against total.
Any other stats you need? Just a question. I understand that any team can win on any given day. I also understand the rivalry between the schools. But if you look at paper alone, these "stats" you needed to see, GAC is a dominate team over not just st. thomas but every other team in the MIAC. Lets not forget where the game would be played as well providing both teams would make it. GAC, #1 seed. Score at GAC. Another stat. 6-3.

Gustavus is an unstoppable team.
Unstoppable??? I suppose could be true if you don't count (or make excuses for) losses to Point, Midd and St Thomas, never mind the tie to Superior. We're all fans here, but many of us have the ability to live in reality...try it some time!!!
