View Full Version : Any fans more sensitive than Lost Calf fans?

Are other hockey fans as think-skinned, as defensive, and as touchy as the fans of the unbranded range animals, otherwise known as lost calves?
Friends don't let friends go to Mankato.

Good question, Mr. Skeeterman!
After some lengthy thinking, IMO, no, I don't think so. On the Men's D-I board, I would think SCSU and U of M are very sensitive. But here on the Women's board, the Gopher fans are very knowledgeable, and appear pleasant and supportive of other programs. The SCSU fans--Top Row, you and myself--try to be humorus once in a while, but not TOO sensitive. --I would say that tUMD fans have the ability to be sensitive, but other fans are sometimes "mean" to them because 1), they are a VERY good team year in and year out, and 2) their coach, Shannon Miller, always seems to do something year in and year out to bring out some verbal/written shots from the users of this forum. When you are #1, or probably the best coach in women's hockey, that is one of the prices you pay!
But for Mankato fans to get their noses out of joint because we make a little fun of their nickname (lost calves, etc.) makes them the #1 sensitive fans, IMO. Especially after all the yacking last year and this year that their team has vaulted past the stumbling Huskies. ALL the SCSU posters have given them their due respect. In fact, Skeeterman's comments were positive towards the 'Kato program, and questioning of the Huskies' program.
One final unsolicited shot at 'Kato--It is ironic that 'Kato is getting these highly recruited women from S. St. Paul--home of the Packers, home of the stockyards and the cattle industry. It seems the right thing to do is to continue to play for the team with the nickname, Mavericks (i.e., the unbranded range animals)!! :) :D --[all of those icons indicate "humor" and sarcasm, and are not meant to be mean-spirited. Please, 'Kato fans, lighten up a little bit.]
Part of what makes college athletics great is the rivalries. In rivalry games, fans tend to get a little more colorful. Things are said/written which wouldn't necessarily be said by a university president or a league commissioner, nor qualify for the highest level of sportsmanship. But it does demonstrate and generate interest in the games. IMO, women's hockey needs nothing more at this time than increased interest in the games.
I think that we could use a little more humor on this forum. But it is hard to get it if people are going to be offended and boycott over every post that they think crosses the line. Look at the men's board. Things get nasty at times, but in the end, most are willing to get together socially after a game. We are all hockey fans. We want good hockey, and we appreciate it when we see it. So if you are say, a UMD fan, and you read a post coming from a Gopher fan in the next 10 days that you don't like, just be glad that you don't have to play Duke in basketball or Oklahoma in football. And recognize the fact that if you lived in the Twin Cities and watched Wendell, Darwitz, and company play 30 times a year, you'd probably be one of those awful Gopher fans yourself. I don't like to admit it, but if I lived 150 miles north of where I do, I'd think that Shannon Miller was the greatest thing to ever happen to women's D-1. While if I lived in St. Cloud, my gallows humor would be better.

Hmmmm...makes me wonder...I once saw a TV interview of Phil Housley with a local Mpls. / St. Paul sports reporter during his career with the Buffalo Sabres. One question the reporter asked Phil was what he missed most about SSP. His reply was "The smell of the stockyards." Could there be a vaguely familiar, yet comforting "aroma" in Mankato ? :D Or maybe it's an All Seasons / Wakota Thing ?
Whatever the connection, MSU is fortunate to get them. Maverick fans will enjoy watching them I'm sure. So will I when the Gophers & Mavericks tangle.

Actually Brooky, the lighting is better at All Season. Other than that, not too much difference between Wakota and All Seaons. Before any Maverick fans come undone about that, I did go to Mankato so chill.
As for being sensitive, I guess it stems from the whole PC attitude of the world. You know, the whole need to like everyone and not talk bad about anyone. A lot different from my early college years when a Maverick fan and a Stevens Point fan would get in a brawl at the arena then head to the Albatross for drinks after the game.

Well written and well thought out posts. I guess when I post something I mean to be a little humorous or to take a shot, I'll have to explain in detail the meaning of it so no one gets offended. Like heck I will. But if there is anyone who is mentally challenged (not that there's anything wrong with that), just keep reading and thinking and sooner or later you'll catch on.
Remember: The day after tomorrow is the third day of the rest of your life.

Oh-Tay, Mo-Tay, you Gopher grunt eater. Now you're a fan of women's hockey, too?
For the Mankato fans: I should have explained my earlier post. You see, there has been a saying that "today is the first day of the rest of your life" By saying the day after tomorrow is the third day of the rest of your life, is kind of making fun of the first saying, but in a gentle and sensitive way. But now it loses a little punch in the translation.
By the everly helpful Skeeterman, Bobbie Anderson's #1 fan.

Who's taking things seriously  Sarcasm's my middle name.
Other than that, not too much difference between Wakota and All Seaons.
I don't know, I've seen some pretty big crowds at Wakota for girls games.

Anybody lose to Wayne State lately?

Good point on crowd size ARM. I guess it's hard to tell how many people are there with the orange lights. Mankato getting the SSP express route is no worse than Woog having the Jefferson connection in the late 80s and early 90s.
Oh, back to the subject of the posting. We aren't all that sensitive. I'm able to give credit where it's due. Every school has their hyper sensitive fans even SCCC.

Could any Mavs fan tell me how Noelle Needham is playing, or if she is playing?? She has great hands, however her speed might hold her back at this level. She is nursing an old knee injury and I was just wondering if she was getting any playing time. Thanks

You are right no the money, her speed does hold her back a bit at this level, she does have great hands, she has been getting some shifts here and there and actually has been on the power play a little also, I know last week she was hurt with a back injury that occured in practice before they went to Bemidji for the weekend. From what I can tell her knee is fine, she just needs to get some more quickness and she will be fine.
