First off, are any of the games being televised, or are their live stats online anywhere. Second, how do you think this team compares to the Canadian team. We certainly didn't take many younger kids who competed in the U22 series. Any thoughts on the players who've never competed at this level? It will be interesting to see what happens but I wish I could actually SEE what happens.

"Ohio State's Tessa Bonhomme (Canada) earned a 10-minute misconduct when she hit Minnesota's Kelly Stephens (U.S.) from behind. Stephens stopped short off the boards and was not hurt on the play. Minnesota beat OSU 10-0 in Bonhomme's last game believe leaving for Canadian duty."

Maybe Tessa didn't care much for Kelly's play last weekend ? ;)

From the Canada/USA box score:

Power Play Opportunities
USA 0 / 10

From the WCHA statistics Minnesota's power play is at 43.1%.

Power Play Points: GP PPG G- A- P
1 Natalie Darwitz 10 2.00 5-15-20
2 Lyndsay Wall 10 1.90 7-12-19
3 Krissy Wendell 10 1.40 6- 8-14
4 Kelly Stephens 10 1.20 7- 5-12

Did Ben Smith not try this combo or did Canada shut them down? If it's the first then I'd wonder what Ben Smith was thinking. If it's the later, there may yet be hope in defeating the Gophers - start studying the film.

Interesting question, moxie. From the Finland game boxscore, it looks like the trio might play together at even strength but not on the power play (based on the assists on Wendell's two goals). Even if they do play together on the power play and were shut down, though, all the tape study in the world won't give your college team the talent Team Canada has on its penalty kill.

Thanks BLW for the info on the FIN v SWE game!! Two UMD palyers made a difference in that one . . . Tallus scores and Piiroinen in net for Finland.

It really does seem that playing DIV 1 hockey in the US raises the caliber of play as compared to those that don't. I realize this a broad generalization, but when we look at these international games we see the same thing (i.e., familiar names) over and over.
