This quote was lifted from the Boston Globe article posted on this website in the women's hockey outside sources in an article entitled "Old school approach":

"Schuler was hired by UMass-Boston in 2001 to create a women's hockey program. She spent a year recruiting, then fielded a club team, and last year, sent a varsity team onto the ice for a full Division 3 schedule. With the goal of simply making the conference playoffs, the Beacons built a 13-12-1 record (led by Schuler recruits Melissa Belmonte of South Boston and Watertown's Andrea Ciarletta), then blasted RIT and RPI in the ECAC East tournament before Manhattanville overwhelmed them in the championship. Schuler was named ECAC East coach of the year."

UMASS-Boston was eliminated by Manhattanville in the semi finals last year. I would hardly call their victory over RPI, which occurred in the regular season, a blasting. Since six of the eight D3 teams in the conference make the playoffs (and 2 of the teams are MIT and Salve Regina) making the playoffs is not a lofty goal.

I don't mind fluff pieces for a program or person but I do mind it being embellished to the point it does't reflect reality.

Necdad I don't get what you are saying. What is the reality?

The research issue is primarily related to this statement:

"then blasted RIT and RPI in the ECAC East tournament before Manhattanville overwhelmed them in the championship." - Boston Globe

The reality (facts) was UMass Boston upset RIT in the conference quarterfinals 6-4(the sixth goal was an empty net goal) RIT out shot UMB so I hardly call that win a blasting. UMB played Manhattanville in the conference semifinals (not the championship) and UMB was blasted 12-0. (I saw that game.) UMB's win over RPI was during the regular season 3-1 but RPI had a substantial edge in shots again hardly a blasting.

My comments are not to say the coach didn't do a nice job and not to say fluff pieces aren't nice to read. The facts didn't need to be embellished with fiction to make the story better.

I wouldn't accuse anyone of intentionally embellishing a story, more likely an honest mistake due to a small miscommunication between the reporter and the coach. Nothing to get too worked up over, I think.
