I may be way off here but i have been watching WCHA women's games for several years and the refs are aweful.
Do the coaches complain?
Maybe i am wrong but there is just no consistancy.
Why are these officals so bad?

you couldn't be more right dude, I don't know where they get these refs - at least in the wcha. They are the worst and most inconsistant that I've ever seen. I could go on and on about this but it's not even worth it. Hopefully someday the women will get decent refs.

I noticed in the UMD game that this seems to be the season for cracking down on movement during the face off. I can't tell you how many times the face off's were done over because of movement.

Also compared to last season, the whistle was blown quickly when the puck was being fought over in the corners. Last year it seemed the whistle was never blown . . .

Not happy with the officiating in the UMD series either . . . looks like we're all in for another rockey season in that regard.

Hockey is always looking for people to referee games. In our area there is a shortage of people willing to do it. I can't understand why.

Since there appears to be a number of experts on this board, maybe they will look up when the next USA Hockey referee clinic is in their area, don their skates and get cracking on the rule books. We sure could use you. :D

What happened to the rule that's IN the rulebook saying you can't freeze the puck along the boards you have to try to fight it out? They emphasized that for years in men's and now women's hockey and they swear they didnt' make any rule CHANGES this year?

and

WHEN was the last time a SHEPHERD had a GOOD game refereeing a game in Duluth anyway? I only saw Friday night so I can't talk for the WHOLE weekend, stayed home to watch the Men's team on tv.. Jezierski is back but has NO clue yet which player is which.

article on Linstad/Flanagan's opinions on the officiating
http://www.hockeyjournal.com/women/200410/officiating21.htm
“It’s shocking. It’s horrible,” Linstad said after watching officials call 90 minutes of minor penalties in UConn’s first two games against St. Lawrence. “I think we just turned the game into women’s lacrosse – a soft game where you’re supposed to let the guy come to you and give them an opportunity to score, and when you get the possession of the puck, you get the opportunity. I can understand in the men’s game you have the opportunity to check and knock the other guy off the puck. We don’t have that.”

The good thing is it's the beginning of the year and the coaches can notify the officials. On letting the defensemen(women) ride them off the puck as far as sticking or hitting other players in front of the net thats going to be a fine line because you have to actually step into the other player.

Get mens league refs they will let you ride the other player off the puck which I believe is the correct way to call a no check game. You need to let some contact happen this is not basketball.

The two times that I remember WCHA Men's officials in Duluth for womens' games, they actually called MORE penalties than when it was the one's that are usually up here. I believe it was the weekend that Shannon Miller threw her water bottle across the DECC ice(either they didn't see her do it or decided not to give a penalty to HER).

Those water bottles can really hurt ya ... I ve seen sticks, trash barrels scores time table, helmets (those are great) they go in pieces when they hit the ice. I once go hit by a fish someone threw at me I couldn't even get mad I was like a fish so water bottle ... but a penalty should have been called for unsportsman like if they saw them through it or new it came from there bench.

People get tooooo hung up on refs... Refs are like ice, sometimes you get good ice and sometimes you get bad ice.. But, in the long run it all evens out. Quit worrying about refs as it's the coaches job to adjust, on the bench, based on how the refs are calling the game.. Just sit back and enjoy the sport..

Magic hound I would agree for the most part, but it is hurting the women's game at time when they have officials that don't even know the rules or respond to other coaches when making calls. There is a ref in the WCHA Leeling that I have watched for three years and she is pretty consistent. She is consistently bad!!! I am Sioux women's fan and she almost gave us Saturday's game by calling a late penalty against the Huskies, but then gave it right back by blowing the whistle too early, negating a Sioux call. She is behind the play all the time and then when questioned she clams up. An agressive coach controls the games and that is what SCSU did all game by berading her. One two occassions her arm was raised only after their bench yelled. It is extremely frustrating b/c I wouldn't want that job either, but you just wish there was some good people who did. I would venture to say she never played at the D-1 level or even close, b/c she can't keep up!
