Just thought I'd pass along that Bowdoin's No 1 goalie from last season Nathalie Morgan will not be returning to Bowdoin this year. It apparently stems from her family coming into some money which disqualified Nathalie from the financial aid she was receiving. The family was unable, or unwilling, to pay her additional tuition. This leaves Bowdoin with Cat MacEachern as the probable No 1. She played well last season but had a supporting role to Morgan. I have no information on any potential back-up goalies in the works. We'll see, I suppose.

Polarbear, I made some nitpicking changes to your post. ;) Nathalie, from Dieppe, N.B., would be a junior this year. It will be interesting to see if she returns to the US to play hockey again.

That's the nature of D3...Bowdoin is close to $40k a year in cost when you roll it up. They use the 'college board' formula to define 'need' and base awards on that. What a lot of people don't realize is that a lot of schools define a loan as financial aid.....so you may be awarded $27k in aid, but if it's $5k in grants and $22k in loans you would have $13k out of pocket now, $22k out of pocket down the road.....per year. Bowdoin is an exceptional college, and Coach Amidon is one of the best to play for but their financial aid department is very meticulous in following their guidelines regardless of athletic status. There are a lot of people who just can't fork out that kind of money just to play hockey.

It's a problem with financial aid at any institution, and I went through similar issues to those being described here. Because both tax codes and financial aid offices are progressive and they only look at one year's income, you get gouged by the government and the college if your family has volatile income. You pay more if your family makes a small amount one year and a large amount the next, than if that money were spread evenly each year. Because the financial aid operates with a one-year lag, you're screwed in a lot of ways when you hit a couple lean years after a wildly successful year. It's a frustrating system, and someone with half a brain needs to fix it. Financial aid decisions can be successfully appealed, but counting on that is never much fun.

Canadian exchange is an issue as well I hear...

The Canadian exchange rates can be a significant challenge in these situations. Currently the Canadian dollar is enjoying some strength being pegged at 78 cents to the US dollar. This currently adds a 28 % conversion premium. The problem is that the Cdn exchange rate has been volitile and unpredictable. Two years ago the Cdn dollar was only worth 63 cents US. making the conversion premium 58 % more. If you are a Cdn family, this makes it difficult for planning your expenses over several years.
