2004-05 Roster Round-Up

The NEW NWHL season is just around the corner, with the impending NHL lockout, the NWHL will be your source for tough, high quality hockey. The NWHL teams have been doing some player juggling with perennial star players changing teams and allegiances. The most notable changes have been the additions of National team members Becky Kellar to the Ice and Gillian Ferrari to the Thunder and Kim St-Pierre to the Avalanche. Other player changes in the league have been the return of Jen Rawson, Danielle Ashley and Bradi Cochrane to the Ice, Aeros, Aeros respectively. The new season will be exciting and closer than ever. My first reaction is that it's nice to see that the teams aside from Brampton and Toronto actually have national team caliber talent. Glad that there will be a little more parity in the league next year.

A bunch of my buddies played a scrimmage against these fine young women WhiteCaps at VMIA ...pretty impressive the way they move the puck and play defense...a few of them got ran over because they tried to play the body on us but hey they give and they take...We're playing them again this Sunday 10/3 at I believe 3:45 at VMIA if anyone is going to be around...

I am more interested to know what the alumni are doing with the degrees they have earned while playing hockey. Is anyone doing anything particularly impressive careerwise or did the hockey experience interfere too much with being able to achieve this. Do we have any doctors, lawyers, successful businesswomen etc ......

Depends on what you term impressive I suppose, but the great thing that we've seen in MN is that some are getting back into our coaching ranks as HS and College coaches. This is crucial long term to women's hockey I believe. In the last year alone I hear that Potter is working with the Coon Rapids team, Slominski & Bills with the Kennedy team, Fryklund w/Duluth East, Shawna Davidson w/Duluth Cenral/Denfeld, Tina Serafin w/Shakopee, Katy Battis w/St. Cloud Icebreakers to name a few from the HS ranks - not sure on how many of our college assistants have came from the playing ranks...

I'd say this is pretty impressive and many of these gals are teaching and coaching.

For the western teams, it is too soon for them to achieve much success of this level. Minnesota was the first program with full scholarships, with their first recruting class graduating in 2001. Most scholarship athletes require an extra year or more to complete their schooling after their eligibility ends. If you want to go to med school, law school, or get an MBA, that requires more years. I did hear that one former Gopher was starting a dental practice. In another 3 or 4 years, one will start to hear more of the "impressive" achievements.

Chiefsfan mentioned several graduated NCAA players now playing in the NWHL. I can tell you that Allison Edgar (UNH) completed her career graduating as a Presidential scholar and winning their Academic excellence Award for four years. She also received a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and as well as playing for the Toronto Aeros is attending University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine. Well done, Eggy! :)
