Hello,

This thread can be used for discussion of issues related to the upgrade of the Fan Forum to vBulletin 3. We will try to monitor it and answer questions that come up, but anyone else can jump in too.

To start, please see this thread in the Announcements forum; it will be updated with additional information and Answers to Common Questions as needed. Currently these are listed there:

Q: What is Linear View? A: This is something asked for by many people before, the ability to display posts within a thread in a different order than the Forums default. It can now be set by each registered user in the User CP. The available options are "Linear - Oldest" (display from oldest post to newest) and "Linear - Newest" (display from newest to oldest; the default on the old Forums). All users default to this, but it can be changed by any user in the User CP. How to change it: Go to your User CP, choose "Edit Options" on the left, then look under "Thread Display Options" - use the dropdown menu next to "Thread Display Mode".
Q: What is Threaded/Hybrid View and why can't we use it? A: This is the ability to view posts within a thread, threaded themselves based on subject and reply time; or to view the thread with the Threaded View at the top above the regular Linear View. Unfortunately either option requires a lot more work by the server for each page access and after testing we decided it was best to disable it.
Q: What is Quick Reply? A: Quick Reply is a speedier way of replying to a post. Click the Quick Reply icon right next to the "Quote" icon at the end of any post, type your response and submit - no need to wait for the normal Reply page to come up. Options in Quick Reply are limited but you can always choose to go to the advanced reply page if you need to.
Q: How can I turn off viewing of Signatures? A: Go to your User CP, choose "Edit Options" on the left, then look under "Thread Display Options" - uncheck "Signatures".

There are bound to be other things that come up so please bear with us as we are learning some of the differences too as we go along. Thank you and enjoy the upgraded Forums!

Sincerely,

USCHO.com Fan Forum Admin

quick reply is the best thing vbulletin ever made.

also, i don't like is that there's a seperate border around every individual post.

I'm sure it will be an adjustment

Finally you can view posts in a thread in their correct order. This is very good, since viewing them the other way has outlived its usefulness since you can click last page and look at the newest posts that way.

I haven't quite looked at everything yet, but I was wondering if this comes with "what you see is what you get" for cut/pasting.

And: I want the old smileys back!

So far so good, but I can't find the option of changing my nametag under my name?

Quick Reply=YAY! do we still have the 60 second rule though?

The new smilies are less than good.

Can we play with the background color any? This background looks kinda ugly.

Bring back the Top 10 list on the members list page. People do want to know where they rant in terms of # of posts

Never mind, i see how to do it

I really liked how the previous board was set up, but I"m sure I'll get used to this.

Admin person: The whole point of being in invisible mode is so that people don't know you're logged on. Your little light/button gives you away. :D

How long until the redesigned menu across the top debuts site wide? Bad-***. Also, I know it's been brought up before, what about the idea of avatars, restrict them to just team logos.

Holy bleeping bleep.

Sweet!! It's like a birthday present from Admin, only five days late. :)

Wow, there is much more grandeur to the look and feel of this message board! It has a more polished and platinum look. And yes, I like the new smiles and icons. Usability-wise, it'll take some time to adjust, but not too far fetched from what it used to be.

How come I have to click on a post to "quick" reply? Why can't I just click in the message box at the bottom of the screen?

Test quick reply.

Kevin,

You could go down to the bottom and just hit the 'quick reply' button on the bottom message. They're pretty close together. :)

Hello, we apologize for the downtime today. It appears to be unrelated to the Forums upgrade. As best as we can tell, we got what was in effect a denial of service attack from the MSNbot, which swamped the server and hosed it. We've now taken action so we hope it won't happen again. Sorry and thank you for your patience, for various reasons it took longer than expected to get back up and running.

If you have a server of your own you might want to do some research on the MSNbot and take action to block or minimize its effect on you, it seems particularly nasty. You can use Crawl-Delay if you still want to allow it but prevent it from swamping you.
