Ahem:

ROOOOOOONEY!!!!!

Wayne Rooney had an auspicious debut at Old Trafford, netting a hat trick with goals in the 19th, 29th and 55th minutes as United rolled over Fenerbahce 6-2 in the opener of group D play in the CL.

Hell, if you're going to be around, sure. I'd love to have someone there, besides my wife, but she'll probably get bored.

Here are the directions if I cannot go.

Sorry for the delay in replying. From Victoria, take the District line
on the underground eastbound then either change at Westminster onto the
Jubilee line south to North Greenwich, then take any bus from bus stop A, or
stay on the tube to Embankment and walk up Villiers Street to Charing Cross
station and take a train direct to Charlton from there.

This has to be one of the best sporting debuts I have ever seen. Now joining the list of "most memorable debuts I have ever seen:"

* The Undertaker
* Maurice Clarett
* Manny Ramirez
* Wayne Rooney

Yes, but Wayne Rooney was doing it against a horrible team. If he had done it against Liverpool, then I would give merit to it.

Good news: Millwall is now down 3-1 on aggregate to Ferencvaros. :D

Millwall is out, as is Dublin's Shelbourne. Newcastle, Middlesborough, Hearts and Glasgow Rangers (via shootout) move on to the draw on Tuesday.

I can't believe this the same Shelbourne team that probably should've beaten Deportivo.

Not that it is ever to be condoned, but how ironic is it that milwall is complaining about hooligan fans?

When your fans get physically abused and stabbed, thats crossing the line from hooliganism to jail worthy offenses. Millwall's fans are horrible but the Hungarian teams fans proved that they were just as bad. I mean, just because they're D*cks doesn't mean they can't get bullied by someone who comes in greater numbers.

Charlton got demolished by Arsenal at Highbury, 4-0.

They play like a completely different team on the road than they do at the Valley.

West Brom is beating Bolton 2-1 right now, Bolton just scored on a free kick that was taken horrible by the keeper and Bolton is pushing for the equalizer.

This is some interesting news, apparently Scott Parker is upset about the fact that he's played about 6 minutes this season and is contemplating a loan move back to the Valley.

Anyone could have told him that he wasn't going to play at Chelsea, they already had 5 inner midfielders...or is it 6 ahead of him, and if anything if he wants to play for England its crucial that he plays first team football and plays often.

He and Owen are letting their agents tell them whats best for them, but both of them aspire of winning a major trophy for England, well they'll both do it on the bench and maybe Parker will watch at home on the telly, because you won't play for England if you don't play. Owen is barely getting more time than Parker on the pitch for Real Madrid, and now he must be wondering how secure his place is up front for England.

Since 98 its been who will partner with Owen up front. Now its shifted and now its who will partner Rooney. I think Smith or Defoe should start ahead of Owen. He's been my favorite player since 98, when I got back into international football and watched the 98 France World Cup while in England on holiday, but this is what is best for England, drop Owen to the bench. When they transfer window reopens, Owen should come back to the EPL and start for somebody, Everton is going to have a large amount of cash to possibly make a bid(smaller than 8 million, maybe 4-6 million, Real should take their losses, or let him out on loan to Everton) and Everton could use Owen and the fact is he didn't grow up a Liverpool supporter, he grew up an Everton fan and admits it. Real Madrid should try and salvage something from their stupidity and sell/loan Owen while they have the chance. They got what they wanted, a Raul in fear for his place in the starting Real Madrid 11 has come back unbelievably confident and powerful in his pace. Ronaldo is not getting displaced by this Michael Owen, maybe he could be displaced by an Owen of 99 or 00, but not of today. Morientes is amazing, they should be playing him as their first substitute at forward anyways.

Final Whistle! Albion gets their first win of the season over Bolton Wanderers.

What a brilliant win for them. They desperately needed that to see if they could stay up. Crystal Palace is horrible. They're going down unless they somehow find out how to play football.

Agreed...as I said, it's not to be condoned.

But in all of England, The Den is considered by many to be the scariest place for an away fan to watch a game--even after improvements in recent years. While they don't cross the line into the territory that we saw on Thursday, fact is that Milwall supporters have terrorized away supporters for years.

My point wasn't to imply that Milwall got what they deserved: they didn't. My point was that maybe Milwall supporters may want to continue to tone down their act, EVEN IF they aren't quite at the level of barbarism as Ferencvaros.

Man City ties at St. Marys against Southampton; should've been better, could've been worse. Sun Jihai needs to be strapped into a wheelchair so he's not tempted to shoot...his shot that my dog could've put us up 1-0 late in the first half could not have been worse.

On a positive note, on the broadcast on GMR I'm pretty sure I heard the City fans singing "you're just a small town in Portsmouth." :p

England wins 2-0 over Wales at Old Trafford.

England played brilliantly, and although Beckham got another one of those retaliatory yellow cards and will miss the next game, he scored a goal that no one could have saved, a curling ball from way out that the keeper would have needed a step ladder to save. Rooney played well and Owen had two quality balls saved, and a third run that was reminiscent of France 98, until the defender just knocked him over.

Lampard scored the opener after just three minutes with a brilliant touch pass from Owen who was in the box. Wales had three real chances the whole game and only one was on target, a brilliant header by Speed that was unfortunately for him, right at Paul Robinson.

Now looking to Wednesday's match I wonder who we will start in place of Beckham. I am tempted to say Wright-Phillips for his first international start of merit.

This thread seems to have died a bit lately, so I'll try to revive it a little bit with a question/topic for discussion:

How do you, personally, try to be a fan of your club, despite (in most cases) being separated by an ocean or two?

Do you own a ridiculous amount of memorabilia? (If so, what?) Buy every new shirt that comes out? Watch their games whenever they're on, no matter the time or whether you've seen them before?

Just wondering how everyone else does this, especially since most of us have more than one team.

Probably the most out-there City memorabilia I own are my framed panoramic photo of Maine Road and the commemorative DVD of the history of said stadium. Aside from that, I try to catch every City game on BBC GMR/socceraudio, but that's really about it.

I'd like to see Owen Hargreaves get the start. All the talk is about Rooney, but I think that Beckham, Owen, and Hargreaves are the key players.

HH, Owen is a shadow of his former self. There were two or three chances he had in the game that younger Owen would have put in the back of the net. If this was a game that had 99 Owen in the game the score would have been 7-0. He would have had those three goals plus a fourth of his own creative brilliance.

Nottingham Forest is leading 1-0 at the City Ground at halftime over Wolves on BBC Radio Five Live (http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/index.shtml?refresh) if anyone (Chuck and Bob, namely) is interested.
