Gunners win 1-0 at Highbury. Hardly the most inspiring performance, but it is 3 points. Chelski get a big 3-0 win at PSG. Not many surprises in the first day of play.

The Red Devils are trailing to Lyon 2-0 early in the 2nd half of their CL matchup! SAF is going to have a coronary one of these days the way his team is playing!

The Roma - Dynamo Kiev game was abandoned at halftime after the head official was struck in the head by a missile and had to be taken to the hospital. Roma is likely in big trouble, as they've had repeated trouble with their fans in recent years.

Yeah, right. At most they'll probably have to forfeit the game and play their next one behind closed doors.

It drives me absolutely nuts how UEFA seems to handle the Italian fans. If a ref got hit with a projectile in England, that team would be out of the CL likethis, maybe all of the English teams. If it's an Italian team, ah, hell, no big deal.

I saw a Roma/AC Milan game last year in which the Milan keeper went down (seriously) five times after getting hit with something or another from the stands. Three times a flare landed on the pitch. Mind you, this was in Milan, while the Roma supporters wreaked havoc.

This is the same Roma team who abandoned a match with Lazio last year so their fans could take to the streets and riot. The same Roma team whose captain got tossed out of the European Championships for spitting on another player.

They should ban Roma for a year from all European play, and maybe sanction the Italian Federation... I think something along the lines of ten points deducted in World Cup qualifying would do the trick.

Gad, I hate Italian soccer.

Man City gets full points away with a 2-1 win at Selhurst this morning. Two goals from Anelka, and Danny Mills had a MotM-caliber game. Keegan's looking a thousand times more upbeat now that it looks like he's avoided the sack. A win against Barnsley on Tuesday and a point against Arsenal and I'll be very, very happy.

Two straight 0-0 draws for the canaries. They've proven that they can compete at the premiership level and that Robert Green is a top-notch keeper, but it'd be nice to see them pull out a win one of these weeks. On the other hand, when i looked at the Palace - at Man U - at Newcastle - Arsenal - at Spurs - Villa start of the season, i certainly didn't expect four draws in the first six.
PS- Nice to see Man City get a win. While i'm usually against teams full of underachieving expensive players, the Maine Road karma still hasn't worn off for me.

Soccer players going to the penalty box? In the Premier League?

I hope this doesn't happen....

Maybe not for you, but it has for City. Save for a handful of games (UEFA Cup, the derby last year, etc), the atmosphere at Eastlands still hasn't reached it's full potential. In hindsight though, I suppose it took Bolton a good while to really get used to the Reebok.

This probably shouldn't be a huge shock, but it makes me wonder...

ManUre beats Liverpool 2-1. Both goals for ManU were BS. I watched the game and the free kick that lead to the first goal was blatantly a bad call, Scholes pulled down the man defending him and got a free kick  and then the corner that led to the second goal was a goal kick, and was off Giggs. But when in doubt I guess give the corner to ManU

Liverpool was the far better side in the second half, and Cisse whiffed on a ball I would have scored on in the first half. It should have ended in a 2-2 draw probably, Xabi had a shot from midfield that Carroll barely got back to stop.

They want to call them "sin bins"

How stupid is that??

I love the phrase sin-bin, such a great old hockey term. It's not ment for soccer.

Now I wouldn't mind the NHL using yellow and red cards. Let a team skate one man down if a player is sent off, it would cut down the thugs.

This may sound a little wacky, but it's not without merit. The current yellow/red card system isn't very effective in dealing with persistant infringement or tactical fouls in non-goal scoring situations. There are simply situations where players will gladly accept a yellow card in exchange for hurting an opponent either physically or tactically. Properly implemented, this could be a big boost for the game.

P.S. Nice road tie for 1FC.Nurnburg this weekend in Leverkusen. They were up 2-0 in the 75th minute and let it slip. Ouch.

United 2 - 1 Liverpool.

All the scoring comes from the United back four tonight as Mikael Silvestre scores twice and John O'Shea added an own goal for Pool (many questions online as to whether or not it actually crossed the goal line). Silvestre's first comes off a header from a free kick taken by Ronaldo and his second was a header off a Giggs corner.

Gerrard left the pitch injured in the 40th minute.

Most important factor in todays match? The return of Rio. He instantly made the United defense stronger and looks to be in good form. Who knows, maybe Rooney will take the pitch on Saturday against Spurs.

One interesting thing from today, Timmy was in the stands.

United starting 11:
Carroll
Brown
Rio
Silvestre
Heinze
Ronaldo
Keane
O'Shea
Giggs
Scholes (Alan Smith 86)

It was way over the line. Rio Ferdinand kicked it out, and his ENTIRE BODY WAS IN THE GOAL. Carroll wasn't tested much, but the goal he gave up was mostly his fault, not O'Shea's. Brown was bad. Scholes was a non-factor. Gerrard just had no impact on the game and only when he left did they press on better.

I have to say, from the way things sounded, Rio had an immediate impact. However, I'm not a big fan of having O'Shea in the midfield. I'd rather see Djemba, Kleberson or Eagles in there.

If Rio does really solidify the ManU defense (though the keeper situation appears to be a bit dodgy these days), then the spotlight really turns to ManU's midfield, which really hasn't been up to snuff so far this season and the quality of midfield play will likely determine how far ManU can go this year.

What, ManU getting favorable calls that result in goals for the mancs? Well, there's a scenario we never see (at least not more than once or twice a week!).

On a penalty box, that'd never, ever fly in international soccer. Interesting to discuss, but not even Sepp Blatter would put forth that idea.
