Any indication of who will be throwing their hat into the ring for the job, or if the search committee already has their sights set on someone?

Some speculation in Brunswick that Michele Amidon will not return to Bowdoin. She could be a possible candidate...excellent track record as both a coach and player.....

I don't think coaching was the problem at Maine. From talking to a coach it was seemed like there was a lack of financial support for the program. If you don't have the money to go out and recruit, you handicap your ability to be a top team.

I wonder if the all time winningest coach in womens hockey history, John Marchetti, would throw his hat into the ring. He is an assistant at Mercyhurst right now. I am not trying to start any rumors, just wondering.

You can keep him!

I doubt Marchetti would be a candidate.

He couldn't cut it at Yale.

He only spent one year at UCONN at an assistant.

I was surprised Mercyhurst offered him the assistant coaching position.

Looking at the programs overall record of the last few years, the program is probably 12-15 under .500- Its a division 1 program, that has been struggling, and has not recruited all that well- Marchetti??? Look at Yale now-- enough said

Does anyone know how on earth a guy with basically no competitive playing background, no competitive coaching background, a simple bachelor's degree, and a problem with obesity (is in his 30s and has the body of a 75 yr. old), and 0 success was able to continue coaching as long as he did at UMaine? Other than his willingness to be the lowest paid coach in DI women's hockey each and every year and his inability to get a better position elsewhere, it was a perfect fit! It didn't take the new AD at Maine long to realize they need to hire a decent coach if they want to turn the program around. In fact, I understand he wanted to get rid of him last year but felt he'd be looked upon as an evil AD by axing people right after he started the job! I doubt there will be too many tears shed for the departing man. When he entered the women's NCAA coaching ranks a few years back, at that time getting a women's job was as easy as getting a job at your local 7-11 store. There is no question that he will have a heck of a time landing a new job -- any job for that matter.

why don't we ask most of the players what they thought about their coach, rather than some idiot with an obvious grudge?

I wonder how long it will be before a certain coach who didn't get the UNH job, and whined about it, tosses her hat into the ring. ;)

Hux, will the fallout from her outburst affect her chances of landing another D1 job. Also is she a good coach?

This is from USCHO News briefs:

Union women's coach Fred Quistgard and his top assistant Myia Hayes have announced their resignation. Quistgard's resignation is effective the end of June. Yates will leave immediately to accept a coaching position at Division III Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H. Quistgard said, "For the past six years, building a strong foundation for the Union College women's ice hockey program has been my passion. Taking a program from the club level to Division III and then moving to Division I in a short amount of time has been very tiring. It is time for me to pass the torch to someone who will appreciate Union College and the special student-athletes we have."

Well given the dalliances of some D1 hoop and football coaches that have gotten new jobs recently, I doubt that a two year old temper tantrum is likely to cost her. I understand that she is a good coach, though she came under fire for switching jobs rather abruptly.

I am sure that Maine will do a national search and come up with a very qualified coach.

Actally, Rick coached a powerhouse Boys High School team in Western NY , and was successfule at DIII - RIT, so he did take the steps to get that position, and yes , six years ago it may have been easier to move up to DI, but I have heard that the players liked him and that the program is not funded as well as it could be to become a national power. He did not play a high level of competitive hockey (but either did Pat Burns or Bob Hartley and they are doing ok) So, making a change may be good, but lay off of a good man

Let me through this name out--Adam Brinker???

I second the nomination of Adam Brinker, coach of the year in the CHA. He should be on the short list of final candidates. He built the Findlay program from scratch, and his team had an above .500 record this year.

I do believe Adam Brinker would be a great coach for Maine (he knows how to run a good program on limited funds). I would again like to make the point that it is time to give some new coaches a chance to run a program instead of recycling old ones (ex O’Malley, Manchetti). I would rather see Kim McManus or Marla Lewis, the other asst coaches at Mercyhurst get a shot before seeing Manchetti behind the bench again. Also there are many young and talented coaches at the prep school level that I think could fill the openings.

There should be no room on this board for personal attacks like that posted by boomer7-shame on you. I have met Coach Filighera and he is a decent man who cares a lot about his team and players-and I have heard the same thing from the parents of players on the team. The kind of person you want to get a program started. And while coaching full time, he has been working on his masters degree. And who rates Ken Hitchcock's qualities, abilities or performance by his body type?
