Anyone know why the Colby head coaching position has been opened for applications? Coach Holsten was one of the class acts in the NESCAC. Who might be next in line?

It's the result of the Title IX lawsuit. Three female coaches held head coaching positions in 2 sports, something their male counterparts did not. Jen was one, and something had to give. Hockey's loss.

So was she forced out due to budget cuts or did she leave voluntarily?
When was the lawsuit settled? What changes did it bring to the athletic department?
Obviously curious here.

Nothing to due with budget cuts, strictly related tothe laswsuit. Obviously this is one of the changes "settled" and to the athletic dept.

OK, I hear you. But still a little confused. Did the settlement of the lawsuit force her out or did she leave not wanting to deal with the changes due to the lawsuit?

...some detail is provided at Colby site...news archive...for Feb 24. Five women athletes sued for equitable treatrment...including improved lockerrooms and the break up of same woman(?) as head coach of either hockey/lax...or hockey/soccer( did one woman caoch all 3?). Anyway....the suit was "settled"...improved lockers and new replacement hockey coach(?)...per the previous post. Who pays the complaints's Tulsa law firm when no money changes hands? k

Seems to me that it is now a NESCAC rule that you can only hold one head coaching position because of this lawsuit. Although, I am still not clear on what this lawsuit was all about.

The title IX law suit filed was mainly over the coaching position problems. Two coaches, Jen Holsten and Heidi Godomsky, held two head coaching positions. No male coaches do the same at Colby. The law suit was settled saying they would either hire seperate coaches for all sports for women, or combine two mens teams. Jen was the first to have her position split. She has not left Colby she is now the head coach of soccer and the assistant coach of hockey. As for Godomsky, the decision hasn't been made yet, the goal is by the fall of 2005 it will be finished. She will either switch to coaching one sport or they will combine two of the men's sports. Jen will still be with Colby hockey, that is very important, the team is still in search of a head coach and a committee has been set up.

...is this a feminist issue that female athletes are short-changed if a coach is head coach of two women's sports?...or is this issue that some women coaches are given extra pay and extra responsibility by having 2 head coaching jobs...unlike their male counterparts? Potentially...this might result in fewer sports...especially in the short spring season...who wants to pay a full time coach to coach 13 lacrosse games? Having distinct head coaches for all sports may be too expensive. k

Thats going to be a tough job...The head coach is staying on as an assistant, with her players still there...Don't know if I'd want that job.

Hey they have an assistant now don't they? Can't they just switch positions but keep the same roles?

This is not completetly accurate. I know for a fact that the mens ice hockey coach at Colby, Jim Tortorella, is the head coach of 2 varsity sports at the school. He coaches the ice hockey team and the golf team. Not that coaching the golf team in 9 matches is a huge deal but there is no difference in a male counterpart having 2 head jobs.

It's good to know that while drug dealers and murderers wait patiently, the American judicial system has time to deal with such pressing matters. Did these lawsuits take place in Massachusetts by any chance?:p
