View Full Version : LSSU Lakers
ok.. so bill is off the hook with the basketball thing..
but i agree, we can beat Miami.. If jeff keeps up his efforts, and our defence can control the rebounds well. we will be set.. if we can play like we did friday.. Hopefully they will come out a little over-confident, and we can get an early lead.. if we can win the first one, i think we are set.

But the point is that its a hockey show. Would you be annoyed if you were watching an NHL game on TV, and they were supposed to do a special report on, say, doug weight.. and instead, they decided to do a piece on LeBraun James? I think i would be.
I don't think that's a good analogy. Colleges will always use their marquee events in one sport to promote other sports, whether it's in terms of announcing other events in other sports during games, or doing radio intermission specials. If they annoy a few people who won't ever give a **** about w. hoops, who cares? I think they'd assume that no one's going to stop following m. hockey entirely because of a w. hoops intermission special, but the w. hoops special might attract new fans. It's a good decision on their part.
And you'd never see an NHL intermission do an NBA feature because there, unlike college, the ownership of two franchises in the same sport are typically distinct. Also, an NHL intermission is doesn't hit the best demographic for an NBA team to get exposure, but I do think a Lakers m. hockey radio intermission is just about the best place for a Lakers w. basketball team to get exposure, because you'll hit a demographic that cares about Lakers sports and some portion just might take an interest in w. basketball if they're doing well.

So can it really be "guranteed" that the Goggin will be rockin next weekend? Isn't Miami on Spring break? What is the fan base for Miami? Is it more community supported or do they draw mainly students? I have this (probably false) view of Miami students as preppy Fraternity boys and prissy sorority girls who wouldn't stick around campus for something as decidedly blue collar as a hockey game, when they could take off for their parents condo in Cancun for the week.....
C'mon it's the playoffs, I can't resist talking a little smack!

no sorry...miami's spring break starts friday....but most students dont leave until saturday or sunday for break, especially with the playoffs being around.....and this team having success.....and lets be realistic fellas....miami is very very good at home, you guys had a chance to see them earlier in the year, and they have only improved with CW gaining more and more experience in big games....this senior class has been around for two dissapointing home loses in the playoffs...with it being their final year and them playing so well, dont think it will be as easy as u are making it out to be....coach blasi will have his boys focused on Lake st. and lake st. only not the joe, and this senior class will have everyone focused to...there have thier minds set on one mission and thats the ccha championship and they know it takes one step at a time....miami has put two good weekends together in a row, and last weekend was like a playoff atmosphere and miami excelled well.....Miami is a much better team than lake st., and in their own barn, they will come out hard, fast, and early....look for them to deliver the knock out punch early and make lake st. think about just getting back on the bus after the first game and going home....

Because of the playoffs, you might be right, but usually students will leave Thursday, if possible, before break. Could just be the snow up in the UP, though. Least you'll be rid of the warm-weather fans in the stands.
redhawkman,
I don't think any of us Lakers fans think it's going to be easy against Miami. I think we feel that if we can win the first game, and admittedly we're big underdogs, then we have an outside shot at winning the series, at least that's the way I feel. Even if they win the first game, I would still consider the Lakers to be big underdogs. The Lakers are a better team now than they were earlier in the season also. Yes, Miami is a better team than Lake State, but anything can happen in a short series, especially if the better team isn't playing up to snuff. For the Lakers to have a chance, they will have to keep the scoring down, because offense is the weakest part of the Laker game.
Sugarisland,
I'll be up in Section 222 at Van Andel. Upper deck, but near center ice, so it should be a decent seat.

Yeah, I don't think anyone on THIS thread thinks the Lakers are going to have an easy time with Miami. Deep down, I think most of us (well, me anyway) were hoping for a matchup against MSU, who we gave all they could handle in two good games last month (granted, we lost both games, but they really had to work for all four of those points).
Now, while I peruse the other threads I have seen posts like "Miami's got nothing in the playoffs and are going to get upset by LSSU" or "Isn't it going to be funny when Miami gets knocked off by a #11 seed again." But you won't find any of that talk around here. :)
Here is my thought. Miami's talent will handely win one of the first two games. The Lakers work ethic, goaltending and coaching will make a game out of the other one, and it will come down to a bounce or two. If that bounce goes the Lakers way, we'll have a game three, and then you never can tell........

Yes, I agree.
Anyone who thinks that the Lakers will sweep Miami and walk away with a 1st round win, is not a real hockey fan. Real hockey fans know that an 11th place team isn't going to walk through a 2nd place team.
Now is there a possible upset? Oh yeah. It would be huge. But UNO could toss off Michigan just as well.
(both are outcomes I'd love to see)
Mogerboy here speaks the truth... it's all about the bounce.:D

Yeah, well put NMUDOC.
I did have a little rant online this weekend though that I am admittedly a little embarrased about.
I went on one of the MSU-UM threads, got a little upset about a few things that were said, and got little mouthy. It was the kind of post that usually irritates the heck out of me, "Our goalie has the best stats in the league and you better watch out, woof woof, etc."
Anyone who read it and checked the time it was posted would have seen a 7:00 AM Saturday morning post from a bright eyed person over a nice cup of coffee.
The problem was that I was in Coronado, and it was a 4:00 AM local Pacific time post after I had just left the "after hours" clubs of San Diego. My good friend "Jack Daniels" helped me compose the post. Next time I won't take my laptop with me on vacation.......

I have to think that the recent upswing in the LSSU play of late is going to carry through nicely in Oxford. I don't know whether that will be enough to survive Miami, but there is certainly hope.
I would love to see a three-game set, with LSSU winning the first game and Miami coming back hard on Saturday -- forcing a tight, nasty game three. If the Lakers can get a bounce or two in the right direction early enough on Friday, they can certainly shut teams down.
I guess I'm one of those people who thinks Miami is suspect. They have won the games they are supposed to win at home (eg, Huntsville, Notre Dame, Omaha -- but also tied UNO at home, Fairbanks). But they have also struggled against Air Force, Northern, and BGSU). Now LSSU might really not be better than any of those teams, but I just don't see Miami as a super-tough team wherein a miracle would be required. Great goaltending and some timely scored could very well do the trick. But then again I thought Ferris was possibly suspect last year, and they went off and beat North Dakota in the NCAAs, so you can take my crystal-ball insight for what its worth.

suspect huh......interesting...suspect enough to beat michigan 8-3....or go up and sweep michigan st. at munn....or to beat ohio st. 3 of 4 times this year??? i dont know how anything that miami has done has been suspect this year...sure they struggeled at the beginning of the year, but that doesnt matter they have stepped it up towards the end....they swept a very good notre dame team, who swept michigan, anyone who sweeps michigan is good in my book.....and yes both teams have improved since they played earlier in the year...but miami didnt have any struggle with them then and i dont think they will now.....they have too good of a senior leadership to have a let now down.....and one advantage miami has already is they played a series last weekend against ohio st. that had a playoff type atmosphere....and miami is still riding high off of that series....despite the split miami played very well last weekend.....they are on home ice and i dont see a let down...if there is a let down enrico blasi should be fired....miami will be ready to play and even though lake st., has been playing well it has been at home or close to it....they have a long bus trip ahead of them and coming into a hostile environment will be tough on any team this late in the year......

I look at it this way...When it comes to tournaments you can forget everything that has happened earlier in the year. Its a whole new ball game...or rather hockey game now. Look at the NHL, how many people thought Detroit was gonna have no trouble with Anaheim only to get swept. Granted the higher seed is usually favored and usually wins...anything and everything can and probably will happen. I'm not gonna go making any predictions except for this...whoever does win this series will probably have to work VERY hard to do so.
