hey, thats not too bad. If the Lakers had been able to steal some games out of Colgate and St. Lawrence, they might have broken the top 30.

Small comfort perhaps, but I see it as substantial progress.

A good second half run, some of the player-disciplinary actions settled, batteries recharged after a tough road-heavy first half of the season, recruiting in full swing, winter bringing the joy of the hockey gods to the UP . . . .

I am so cocky and confident that I am already planning a trip to the wretched festering stank-hole of Detroit to see the Lakers upset the University of California in Ann Arbor on their own quasi-home-rink and skate into the NCAAs on the shoulders of stellar goalkeeping and air-tight defense.

Look I found Lakerblue's real identity; it says he is from South Haven though.

Ok -- i'm confused. I saw this note on the USCHO News section. Its dated 1-5-05. What gives????

3 Laker Superior State Players Dismissed From Hockey Team
by Peter Pietrangelo/The Compass, Lake Superior State U.

(U-WIRE) SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. — Controversy has struck Laker hockey once again, as three players, junior Mark Adamek, sophomore Barnabas Birkeland, and freshman John Nogatch, were kicked off the team for "violating team policy," according to Director of Athletics Bill Crawford.

Crawford declined to further discuss the situation, saying on his Rock 101 radio pre-game show last Friday, "That's all [people] really need to know about it."

One of the offending players, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Compass, "We're not allowed to talk about it," when the newspaper reached him for comment.

To date, The Compass has not been able to acquire a copy of team policy. Mark Jastorff, Vice President of Student Affairs, said that the infractions were not violations of LSSU policy, but rather a violation of hockey team rules. He did say that University officials became aware of the situation and conducted the appropriate investigations, the result of which has been the athletic dismissals.

University officials have been careful not to publicly discuss the situation, saying that the Family Education and Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 prevents them from discussing any situations. They have also referred to this law is discussing any disciplinary proceedings, including the three reported sexual assault cases and the Ryan Reid incident.

According to Dr. Youngblood's "Goldenrod Update" last month, FERPA prohibits educational institutions from disclosing personally identifiable information from educational records." She goes on to say that any student disciplinary proceedings are covered under this act.

The Compass says one thing, the Athletic Department one day earlier said another:

Did something happen in one day? Or is the Compass simply dated and wrong (as a former Compass writer I would not be suprised).

As a student at LSSU I can say that the article was in the compass in December before we left for break. It is not "new news". I'm very excited to know that they are reinstated though, as stated earlier, they are good guys, and strong players. I think Dunn and McJannet back on their line is also good, they seemed confused when they played D...they know how to play F and glad they will be up again. Hopefully tomorrow night will be successful for the Lakers, and also hoping to see a great game Saturday night!!

IT'S THE COMPASS!!! All current or former LSSU students know not to listen to single word in the Compass. Only a handful of people know the real story behind the Nogatch/Adamek/Birkeland story, and I assure you Pete Pietrangelo is not one of them. The article was written prior to break (and prior to the breakdown by the article's author). I will say this, the Compass has been very responsible for their coverage of the off-ice drama this year. They didn't publish any rumors as fact this year like they have had in the past.

I was impressed with Paula Westons recent comments...its none of our business...let the college handle it.

I Don't Know Why Fans Obsess about Players' Private Lives

In December I received a lot of email from fans around the league about what's "really" going on at Lake Superior State, and what "really" went on at Bowling Green.

In Sault Ste. Marie, Frank Anzalone suspended a number of players for "violation of team rules." In my last column, I wrote about Ryan Reid, Mark Adamek, and Barnabas Birkeland, all of whom have been reinstated by the Laker hockey team.

Reid's suspension was the result of his actions at an off-campus party. I can only speculate about what Adamek and Birkeland did, and my speculations lead me to believe -- given what Anzalone said and what I've learned -- that it's garden-variety college stupidity.

As for the BGSU players, think more of the same.

What I do not understand is why fans think they have the right to know every detail of the private lives of these young men. They are not professionals, and while they've signed some of their lives away for four years, they are not obligated to share every moment with the general public.

Nor do I feel inclined, in an editorial column, to investigate the nature of their transgressions. They were stupid. They did stupid things. They were caught. Their respective academic institutions -- and in Sault Ste. Marie, the local police -- have held them accountable, meted out justice, and given all the details they care to give.

What I can tell you is that Lake State plays steady, risk-free hockey in front of two good goaltenders -- and Jeff Violin is back in the lineup -- that the Lakers have a hard time finding the net, and that Anzalone is content to let the rebuilding continue at its own pace.

As for BGSU, the early going gave some kids a chance to play and grow, you know about Jordan Sigalet, Scott Paluch is a hell of a coach, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in Detroit in March.

Okay?

It's good to see the goalies morphed into one over break. ;)

I didnt get a chance to listen to the game last night. How did they look and does anyone know how much longer Birkeland will be out with his broken arm?

Went over to the Hounds game last night (yeah Carter is the real deal!) so I missed the Lakers but from what I was told it was a pretty lame game. Hopefully the boys will put in a better effort tonight and capture those two points that they need so bad to move up in the standings. It would be awesome if we can secure home ice advantage for the playoffs this year!

On another note, I was reading Wodon's column "between the lines" and he made reference to the opinion that small schools such as the Lakers will have a hard time competing against the new big powers becasue of their facilities.

Now as far as I am concerned the Taffey Abel still ranks as one of the better facilities in the CCHA if not the NCAA. Now I know it can't compare to what they have in North Dokata of Wisconsin but it sure holds up well when comparing it to even Yost and Munn arenas. I also happen to think that it is better than Ohio's cavern of an arena becuase that one just isn't suited for hockey. Am I wrong? Thoughts on this?

I think Birkeland is supposed to be out a couple of weeks, but Bill C said it was because of a knee, and no longer the arm.

I don't see the Lakers getting home ice in the CCHA 1st round this season unless they can somehow find a way to start getting a sweep or two at home (or the road for that matter) against league opponents. There are enough teams still hanging around close to each other in the middle of the standings, such that they still have a chance at home ice, but it just ain't gonna happen unless they start scoring more goals.

I will be very disappointed if they don't put up a better effort tonight, and score at least a few goals and pull out a victory. Scoring is obviously still the biggest problem. The Irish have trouble scoring themselves, so this weekend should have been a golden opportunity for a long awaited Laker sweep, but now that can't happen. Let's hope the Lakers can get at least 3 points this weekend.

From the broadcast last night, when the Lakers were still up 1-0 very early in the 3rd period and on the pp, Rainville made a great pass to Fauci in front of the net but Fauci missed the net completely on his shot and Bill C said he had a lot of open net to shoot at. That would have put the Lakers up 2-0 and they likely would have went on to win. Instead Notre Dame scored shortly thereafter and we wound up with a 1-1 tie. Until the Lakers start capitalizing on these type of opportunities, they just aren't going to improve much more in the standings.

One major disappointment I have with the Lakers this season is that too often they are getting outscored in the 3rd period. That has to change.

I don't think the Taffy prevents the Lakers from competing against the big boys. I just think it's a lot tougher building a program that can compete at NCAA tourney level at a smaller school like LSSU. It takes time. And once you get the program to that level, its tough to keep it there for long because other schools/opportunites come calling (i.e. more $) and that makes it difficult to hang on to your coach once you get a good one.

Great game tonight! The Lakers made a great comeback in the end. The officiating in this series has been really poor. I was starting the think the ref was a Notre Dame Alumni. Notre Dame's true colors came out at the end of the game when their goalie starting swinging his stick at the goal post. Then the Notre Dame coach started a minute long yelling match at the ref. He didn't even stay on the ice to shake hands. It's obvious that Notre Dame is in no way are good sports, but because of thier big name what normally would be seen as disgraceful will be blown off.

Great game Lakers!!!
