Watching the guys pound that Toronto team was very pleasant indeed, however, I think the REAL test of their improvement will come against Michigan next Thursday. I'm not being skeptical, but it's the games that count, that COUNT!
It was awesome to see so many score and so often. The powerplay looks much improved, as did the passing. It was an excellent way to start off the season for sure. Let's keep the momentum going as we head to Colgate this weekend.
GO LAKERS!!!!!

Listened to the game on the radio. Sounded like the guys played well despite what the score says. It sounded like we had control of the game until Colgate started doing some longer ice passes and started to spread the guys out. Before that they couldnt get anything. Our defensivmen were keeping them away fromt the net and forcing them to take long perimeter shots. This definetly sounds like a much improved Laker team.
On a side note....Francis Anzalone Jr. did a great job on the play-by-play. So much better than Bill Crawford. I think Francis should call every game possible.

Francis is good (really good considering he's what 16 years old or so) but come on now, Bill Crawford is THE MAN!

Actually, I think he's 17 ... but that's splitting hairs. Nonetheless, he does do an excellent job on the radio!

Lakers sounded good but hated to hear that they just seem to fall that one goal short or allow that one mistake still that takes the game from them. Lets see how they play tonight and hope for a win.

Your team played well last night and you have nothing to feel bad about. It was a sloppy game with alot of close forechecking. Seventeen penalties dished out but both teams powerplays not doing much. I thought your defense played well and Jakaitis did a good job. He needs to control the rebounds a little better though. Your offense really didn't get going, that looked to be your weak spot. It looked like an early season game for both teams. Despite being outshot 2-1 you guys were in it to the end.

Some positives to take from this game:
1. Special teams--The Lakers prevented Colgate from scoring on all seven power play chances--from what I remember this was an area they struggled in last year. Plus, they popped in a PPG to boot.
2. A goal from a freshman--this should give Nogatch some confidence.
Add to that strong play from Jakaitis and the fact they were in it til the end. A "w" would have been nice, but these are good signs.

Sounds like there were some bad calls (or lack thereof) late in the Saturday game including one in overtime that directly resulted in the Colgate goal. Apparently a Colgate player more or less dragged Smith down to get the puck from him. Anzalone was quoted as saying he thought there should have been 3 penalites called against Colgate in the last few minutes of regulation that werent called. He was also not happy about the lack of a call in the overtime. Its a tough loss to come off of. Hopefully they can get it together for UM.
Although it sounds like there has been some overall team improvement, the bottom line is that the scoring still isn't there. Three goals in two games won't get you points most of the time. Let's see what they can do at home againt Michigan.

I was at the game and didn't see a penalty on the winning goal. The ref seemed to not call any penalties in the last two minutes. Campaner is five seven, if he pulled a guy down it would have been obvious. Jakaitis is very good, if not for him it would have been 3-1 or 4-1 easily, he's the real deal!
Again I say times are changing and so should coaching, a loss is still just that. You have people who can put the biscuit in the basket, give them the supporting cast to do what they do best,

Well, I'm glad all of us Laker Backers are fixating on the positive.
First, we should keep in mind that Colgate is the defending ECAC Champ, a solid team playing at home. Although I'm not happy about two losses, I think it would have been fantastic to steal a point or two out of this tough early season NC game.
Second, Michigan is always a tough set of games. The Thursday night game should be a good show. Saturday, the Red Wings are giving away tickets to the Wings season ticket holders -- which should ensure a large crowd -- and because of the location a large pro-Michigan crowd. So it doesn't get much easier for the boys, but this is tough group of kids (and tough coach) and I think we're going to do well this weekend.
Third: Francis was excellent. To be that good while being that young means the young man has great talent.

We need a couple players to step up and start scoring and i think we have them. They just need to shoot that puck with alot more authority and not just throw the puck at the net.

Lakerblue..You are absolutely right. I am obviously a Gate fan but your boys played their hearts out. Gate won the ECAC for only the second time last year. We only lost one impact player from a very young team and have our first frosh scholarship players EVER. This team is supposed to be better and more mature than last year and I think this will be one of their best teams ever. You could have won either or both of the games with a break here or there. If your fans are negative about the weekend then they don't know much about the game. All I hear is negativity towards Anzalone, it looked to me like he's doing a good job. If someone steps up and starts scoring you will get the wins. Good luck against a tough Mich. squad this weekend!

I sure wanted a point or two out of this weekend, but there are still some positives to take out of it. Last year they would have had one 5 minute stretch in each game where they totally fell apart and let in two goals. They would have lost 5-2 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. It seemed like they played for 60 minutes each night. They just need some one to step up and score and it's too early to say that nobody will. As was said before, even if Colgate isn't an "elite" team, they are certainly a very very good team and we hung with them all weekend. I am getting sick of moral victories, but I think this counts as one.
I was only able to listen in on Saturday, but I sure heard Nogatch's name mentioned a lot. It sounds like he was very involved in the play for a freshman.
I think most of the anti-Anzalone types were purged from this thread before I got here last year. *Most* of the Laker fans on here totally support him I think, though there are several non-Laker fans who enjoy coming on here and bad mouthing him.
Michigan has been beatable this year, but I am sure they will have their "A" game on Thursday!
GO LAKERS!!!

Did anyone catch the Laker Hockey show from Moloney's tonight? What did Coach A have to say about the past weekend and the upcoming challenge of the Whimperines? Looking for an update...
