They had a terrible team that year, they got extremely lucky to finish in 3rd, winning the CCHA coach of the year probably saved Borek another season. Have to say that it is terrible that 3 years after he got fired he is still the most interesting thing we have to talk about.

Posters have asked what brought the Lakers down and it is impossible to answer that without mentioning Borek. As for talking about him, I don't think he has been mentioned much on this whole thread at all.

Good Lord, Are you kidding me?? Borek has been bashed, bashed and then bashed some more on this thread for YEARS! Not talked about much - HA! If you went back and compared how much Borek has been discussed vs how much actual hockey has been discussed, Borek would win in a landslide. Take a note from the Budwiser Lizards - LET IT GO LOUIS, LET IT GO!:D

On a different note, I wish Mike Kautz the best if he is indeed going to UWSP. Jay-PointRC, he is a good guy, but got hardly any playing time, which was a combination of his personality not meshing with Anzalone and some mistakes he made. He could definitly be a quality D-III Defenseman though.

And LakerHockey - check out the new Notre Dame Football "The Shirt 2004" - their theme this year is "WE ARE NOTRE DAME". HMMM - does that sound familiar at all???

Generally speaking, Borek has only been bashed to the extent that some folks have posted on the Laker thread that they thought he had done a very good job at Lake State. His record at Lake State speaks for itself. I believe even the "bashers" give him credit for being a heck of a nice guy. But the truth of the matter is that under Borek the Lakers went from being a perennial NCAA tournament team to a last place CCHA team.

I appreciate the info, it's really really helpful,

UWSP has benefited from former Lakers that is for sure, before Mike Kautz we were fortunate enough to get Justin Micek for 2 years.

I agree Bill and I agree also that Borek has taken a long beating here but as you said Bill, even those of us who did not like him as a coach, always upheld him as a nice guy and never put him down there.

On a different note, there is a great story about Brian Rolston on the NHLPA website in which Bill Crawford speaks very highly of our first rounder - and with good reason of course. Check out the story here:

Did anyone go or hear what kind of turn out they had at the 1994 NCAA champion hockey reunion? I had a prior committment, so never had a chance to go.

Speaking of 94, man could we ever use another Clayton Beddoes and Sean Tallaire. And another Wayne Strachan would be nice also.

Hockey Season is closing in...Excitement is building...and well it's definitely a good sign when the new season's roster is on the Laker Athletics web site!! Here's hoping the new talent teamed up w/ the more experienced will yield many more "WINS" this year! It would sure bring everyone's spirits up. [/COLOR

Just finished checking out the updated roster. Does anyone back in the soo have the lowdown on the new guys? Plus who is this Eric Hill guy? He has an '82 birthdate, so he is no incoming freshman, plus it says he is a JR already. Anybody have any leads on him? He does look like a big defenseman though @ 6'3', 208lbs. I just hope he is D-1 quality. And how about Nogatch, Eves, Bahen, Oke, and Derek Smith the second? If I remember right, none of these guys signed very early, so I guess we will have to wait to see them with the Anchor on their chests to really evaluate them, but any I'm sure I'm not the only Laker fanatic looking for an update on the class of 04.

I agree, a lot of the blame rests on Borek, but a couple of people have hit on a point that is becoming more and more sore. It's hard for the little schools to compete for recruits anymore, as the large schools (30,000+ students) have almost carte blanche when it comes to recruiting.

Come to U of M - scouts in the stands every game, 1st rate facilities, many past players in the NHL.

Come to LSSU, NMU, MTU - scouts in the stands when a big team is in town, decent facilities (I'd rank the BEC as 1st rate due to it's recent construction), and a handful of players in the NHL.

MOST recruits look at college hockey as a stepping stone to professional hockey, and you're going to get seen the most if you play for a large school. Plus, good players are used to winning. Ergo, they want to play for a powerhouse.

*Disclaimer*

There are some GREAT recruits out there playing for these small schools. I'm just saying that the playing field isn't level.

Could be that Hill is a transfer from the defunct Findlay program? Or maybe he just hasn't been formally playing for a few years and decided to walk on.

I don't know much about the incoming guys, although I think that Derek Smith is supposed to be a little more of an offensive minded defenseman. That's something that has been missing from the Lakers for many years.

It looks like he is a local kid who has been going to Lake State and is trying to walk on. I found this on the net:

http://www.detnews.com/2001/highschools/0103/14/d12-198118.htm

Just about him playing for Soo High in the State playoffs in 2001. I found a few other things online that led me to believe he has been going to LSSU but has not been playing hockey.

I am somewhat intrigued by this Bahen guy. He had pretty good stats on a great team. Makes me wonder why some one else didn't scoop him up.

I did some digging and have found out that Eric Hill indeed has been an LSSU student for the past two years. He played for Soo High, and was offered a spot on the Lakers last year, but declined. Apparently he changed his mind. Frank must really believe in this guy to be turned down and still give him another shot the following year.

On another note, is there any doubt that Bo Cheesman will be named captain of the squad this year?

While Bahan and Oke were solid Junior players they will have a big "adjustment" when they try to step into D-1. With the large ice surfaces that they are going to play on the skating of both these players will have to improve a great deal. On top of the tempo of the game they will just not be able to get where they have to go. Two real projects who have been given a great opportunity, good luck to them both.
