Question for those closer to the source than myself. As my daughter has started to look at colleges(soph right now), I really started researching the different programs available- including finding this website, and in some ways find myself more confused.
First, I should clarify a few things-
1- she's a 1200 SAT student, so admittance is not an issue
2- she's probably not a D1 player ( except a new program that needed players)
3- location is of little issue either, she is looking at liberal arts schools and she wants to play

So, I/we have determined (correct me if I am wrong), that ther are several levels of the different levels-

D1A- the elite ( ok...we are out here)
D1B- building up to the top ( out here too, I think)
D1C- nobody really cares if it improves, or a new program that will stay in the bottom 3rd

DIIIA- Same
DIIIB-same
DIIIC- same

ClubA- usually a new or building team that is heading to D1 status
ClubB- strong, yet destined to stay club (which is OK too)
ClubC- a group of students, playing before beer( or whatever)

Also, a new group enters in- the new teams, 2 questions about these-
1- how do you find out about them?
2- how do you know which direction they are going?

An example would be the recent announcement by Robert Morris about their men's team, which included a statement by the AD 'as we prepare to add womens hockey' - I have searched high and low for anything else about this...forget it...

Anyway, sorry for the long first post, but here in Ohio, we have to really promote ourselves, there is no prep school league, the only chances are tournaments and Nats, so it helps to know as much as possible. Especially when not dealing with a 'superstar', although she has been at Chigago Showcase, etc, there is no point being unrealistic.

Any points, direction, etc is much appreciated

Thanks in advance!!

I don't know of any levels denoted by letter suffixes in any Division....there are certainly teams at different levels of development...but as for DivIIIB...no such thing.....DivIII is what I follow, so can only speak to that directly.....

that she is in love with some of the NESCAC schools, and has had good feedback from some of them.

Also, missed that last group of DIIIC schools- a new program heading to D1..

I think thats it....

PB... love your posts by the way!!

The letters were my own way of ranking how the team(s) seem to be seperated. I know that there is no such thing, I just made that up.

Sorry, should have clarified that little thing....

ok, that makes sense...in the NESCAC top tier is Bowdoin, Middlebury, and probably Williams, tier two is Hamilton, Amherst, and Wesleyan and tier three is Conn College, Colby and Triinity...in the NESCAC teams don't seem to move between tiers too much, though that is changing with increased parity and the recent expansion of DivIII womens hockey...I've been watching the "girls" for 18 years...and the sport has really taken off in the past 5 years, or so...I think Bowdoin and Midd will be top tier for years to come....I think Amherst, and Hamilton are on the rise in the not too distant future.....

If I was picking in the NESCAC for my daughter it would be between Amherst, Bowdoin, Colby, and Middlebury ( this is assuming that hockey is part of the equation...without hockey, my picks would be slightly different!!)

Hey there is always Elmira too!:)

Your daughter could come in and start immediately is she starts her enrollment in the 2005-2006 season. Elmira is LOSING a ton of seniors that season (junior class right now i think totals 10-13 players?? something like that)

Elmira College is a third year program and has won the only two NCAA sanctioned NCAA tournaments. They are near the top of D3 attendance every year for womens game and the games are free to get into to. The arena is a top of the line D3 rink. Elmira College is committed to hockey and their two programs are both nationally recognized. EC is one of the top private universities in the Northeast region according to US News College rankings..

If you and your daughter wanna come and be part of the tradition and powerhouse hockey of Elmira...I'd suggest taking a look down here in the Southern Tier of NY. EC is also less money than those NESCAC schools;) :p

"But it's in New York!!!! It's like in the armpit of America!!!"

As far as states go New York maybe one of the most diversified of all. Without question, it contains the armpit (or worse) of America. There are however as rural parts as any you will find anywhere else. Not wilderness but that's Alaska stuff.

Elmira is out in the "nicer" part of the state. Don't discount it, thinking its part of the "Big Apple".

As disclaimer, only lived in NY, too close to NYC, hated it. "Upstate" very nice. And I have no Elmira affiliation either.

By the way Elmira is a cubic boat loads of hours closer to Ohio than Maine.

PB2,

Out of curiousity, why do you include Colby on your "short list" for a hockey playing daughter interested in NESCAC but exclude Williams? Also, to add to your excellent grouping of the schools, Bates has a decent club team. It may also be worth noting that Amherst made a big improvement this year.

Ohiohockeydad,

Although 1200s are excellent SATs, i understand that you may need serious "help" from the coach to get accepted at many of the NESCAC schools, i.e., you would have to be on the coach's "list". I hear the average SATs at places like Amherst and Williams are around 1400. Collegeboard.com reports that the middle 50% of first year students at Williams scored from 660-760 on the verbal and 660-750 on the math.

Colby makes my list because of their tradition as a hockey school which far pre-dates Williams (don't get me wrong...any school in the NESCAC will provide an excellent education!!!) and, frankly, being close, geographically, to Colby, and wanting them to rise, once again, in the ranks of womens hovkey tilted me in their favour....As for Bates...I am not convinced that their club team still exists....I live 18 miles from Bates and haven't heard a word about their Club team in a couple of years...and I read the Sun-Journal frequently (Lewiston, ME newspaper)

Bates' club team is active. A friend of my daughter plays on the team. There is a web page on them on the Bates site.Their record this year is around 5-10-2. URI blew them out (lost 4 games), but they were competitive with BU (split 2 games).

That's good to hear...up until three or four years ago Bowdoin would always schedule an exhibition with them...too bad, for whatever reason, they no longer do that.....

...just FYI...about 5-7 years ago...the median SATS were "re-centered" upward....by 150 extra points divided between both scores.....the NEA and the colleges play down the re-centering to keep tax-payers and parents in ignorant bliss about the 30+ year decline in SATS. The re-centering is why colleges like Williams are approaching 1400 median...and Harvard has some 1/4 of class appproaching 800 on one or the other board. Case in point...Bush and Gore's high 500 boards in Verbal would be approaching mid-600's. Be careful with Newsweek's "regional" vs "national" rankings.....it is a Lake Wobegon self-esteem thing. BTW...the Ohio Flames? looked good at CT Polar Bear tourney....lots of prep school and college coaches watch that tourney. k

Not by much. :) Anyway, I wouldn't trade my Elmira experience for anything in the world.
