Can someone please post the rules used to break ties in conference standings at the end of the regular season.

There are currently three teams tied in the ECAC D3 East , I was wondering who would be ranked highest if they were to finish with the same number of points.
Thanks

I don't know what the d-III rules are, but the D-I ecac rules are here: http://www.ecachockey.com/Page_for_Women/championship/Tiebreaking_Procedure

I don't see a similar link for dIII, but I imagine the rules would be similar if not the same.

In the NESCAC it may come down to a toss of the coin this year, between Midd and Bowdoin...only realistic shot at avoiding that is a Williams upset of Midd this weekend...here's the tiebreaking formula from the NESCAC manual......

c. Ties will be broken as follows:
1) Head-to-head result (if teams play each other more than once during the regular season, the game
that appears on the league schedule will be the game that is counted).
2) If teams tied during the regular season, or there is a 3-way or more tie, the following tie breaking
procedure will be used:
a) Best record among tying teams, against one another (head-to-head).
b) Most conference wins (in games that are part of the conference schedule and count toward
league standings).
c) Comparison of results of conference games played against top 4 teams (including all
teams at the 4th spot).
d) Comparison of results of conference games played against top 8 teams (including all
teams at the 8th spot).
e) Comparison of results of conference games played against conference teams in rank order.
Comparisons shall be made one team at a time starting with the highest ranked team.
f) If the tie remains after comparing results against the highest ranked team, the results
against the next team in rank order shall be used. This process is continued until a winner
is determined.
g) Coin flip (or similar random action involving all tied teams).
Note: In case of ties among three or more schools, the criteria above will be used in order until a team (or
teams) is separated. At that point, the process begins anew (returning to the first criteria) with the remaining
teams. The process is continued until the tie is eventually broken.

Nope, at no point does goal differential enter the picture in the NESCAC...it should!!! Pretty mickey mouse when an entire season boils down to a coin toss.....

Using the NESCAC rules (I do not know if the ECAC has different rules, they do in other respects):

RIT, NEC and USM are currently tied. However, RIT and NEC have conference games remaining. RIT should beat MIT which would give them 23 points. M-ville should beat NEC both games which would leave NEC with 21 points. USM will remain at 21 points. (Notice PB2 that I said should before the games were played!!:D ) NEC would win the tiebreak for 4th because they beat and tied USM head to head.

If NEC should happen to defeat M-ville one game  ; RIT would win the tiebreaker because NEC/RIT split during the season but RIT has more in conference victories than NEC. If RIT should lose to MIT and NEC loses both to M-ville, NEC wins the three way tiebreaker by having a better record among the games played among the three NEC 2 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie; RIT 2 wins, 2 losses; USM 1 win, 2 losses, 1 tie.

Feel free to correct if I have misinterpreted the scenarios. Of course if NEC sweeps M-ville, there will be no need for tiebreakers!!!;)

Frankly, I was quite entertained because the fans from RPI and others care deeply about their teams and it showed. This can only be good for the future of women's hockey. I hope all approach this board and its comments with a bit of humility, humor, creativity and a decent amount of "home team" bias. So jumping on one's soapbox is just fine as long as it is not spiteful or mean.

Bye the way, I enjoy the recaps of games many of you do. It has made watching the teams much more enjoyable throughout the year. I only wish all the teams had a 'reporter' in the forum.

HELLO NECDAD...I THINK THIS PART MIGHT BE MISINTERPRETED
WELL...AT LEAST THE SWEEP PART OF IT :)

Ties are broken as follows:

1) Head to head record
2) Wins in ECAC East
3) Record vs. top 4 in league
4) Record vs. top 8 in league
5) Goal differential in league

RIT appears to have a lock on third place with a win vs. MIT on Saturday. That can only be changed by a NEC home sweep of Manhattanville. A split by NEC and a win by RIT gives RIT third place due to their wins in the East.

It appears that UMB will visit RIT on Saturday (2/28) and USM will go to NEC. Should be two great games considering the parity of USM and NEC as well as UMB being on a roll after upsetting RPI. A check of the UMB roster shows 4-5 players that didn't play against RIT back in December. RIT still has alot to prove as they haven't really won a big game yet. They should beware of a much improved Beacon team.
