Providence ended up playing their best game of the season so far especially with the need to double shift all game long.
The game started out like a repeat of the DC game a couple of weeks ago. Sonny Watrous drove in when the puck was popped ahead of the field and scored .31 seconds into the game. Stephanie Jones answered immediately going 5 hole on Bugden at .59 as she drove down low to get the shot off.
Providence settled into their game and was making good plays which in the end increased significatnly the number of shots they had for the day compared to yesterday. PC got the lead for good with at just after the 18 minute mark when on the pp UNH let Kelli Halcisak walk right in and she ripped one in.
Period 2 saw PC continue to push play for the 1st 15 minutes after which they clearly began to lose their legs. The lead lengthened to 4-1 before the 5 minute mark as a pair of Friars scored their first of the year. First Kristin Porter got her first college goal when she found herself on the doorstep and banged away a time or two before putting it home. Then shorthanded set up by nice work from Darlene Stephenson Christina Redmond knocked her first of the year home.
At about the 15 minute mark PC had outshott UNH about 25-20. The rest of the way UNH held the advantage about 20-5. Bugden came up big especially on a late 2nd period penalty, which could have let UNH back in the game with a period left.
UNH found the hole deeper .32 seconds into the 3rd when Watrous found the puck before Bourdon could control the puck and knocked it home from the crease. On a 5x3 just over a minute to go UNh closed it to 5-2 when Gordon scored. Beating Bugden down in the crease before Jana could kill it this time.
UNH dug themselves too deep a hole to get out of. They did seem able to move the puck well. Bugden stoned them from in close numerous times. They were also hurt by a couple of 2nd/3rd chance goals in close. They clearly were buzzing by PC late in the game and still had little to show.
Basically it looked like PC played 2 lines and worked in 4 of the other 5 players regularly. Stephenson who got 3 assists got 3rd star, Sonny Watrous with a pair of goals got 2nd, and Jana Bugden with a strong recovery after the initial goal got 1st star.
