Alright, here we go. Best matchups of the East, coming up this weekend. Dartmouth@Harvard, Sunday 2 p.m. No reasons not to go if you're in the Boston area, no competition from men's hockey on Sunday, Patriots are playing Saturday night. Yeah, there might be another snowstorm, but latest forecasts say it'll hold off until the evening.

Crimson has an article today on Harvard's even-weaker-than-usual fan support in comparison to Dartmouth's record crowds.

“There’s definitely going to be some hitting and physical play,” Ruggiero says. “If that’s what fans are looking for, they’re going to get it.”
Wouldn't argue with that.

dave,
Do you see the ECAC ever going to a 2 game weekend series format against the same opponent (a la the WCHA)? Do you know the conference's historic rationale for the single game schedule?
A weekend series with Dartmouth and Harvard would be great, similar to this weekend's contests between Minnesota and UMD. I've always thought it's interesting to watch changes in a matchup from one night to the next in a weekend series depending how the earlier game went.

dave,

I'll sure be there.

Well the key difference is that ECAC teams play each other twice per year and the WCHA teams play each other four times. When you play two games per season, there's a benefit to splitting those two games among two weekends in different halves of the season. It's also "fairer" because each team plays the other team once on their own ice (and doing home-and-home's with schools as far apart as Harvard and St. Lawrence is impractical). So I think this is your best option given that everyone plays each other twice.

St. Lawrence and Union both play their conference schedules in two game series because they have no travel partners (though Clarkson will be St. Lawrence's partner next year). It'll be interesting to see what happens if Vermont jumps to Hockey East. Then Dartmouth loses it's partner and there's all sorts of rearranging.

I do wish the top ECAC teams could play each other as much the top WCHA teams, but I don't see how it's going to happen, unless there's a dramatic change like the Ivies splitting from the rest of the ECAC.

The WCHA would have trouble implementing an ECAC-type schedule, particularly on the men's sice, because of the travel involved. Once you go to Grand Forks, ND or Houghton, MI, you'd just as soon play two games. As for Anchorage, even two games aren't enough. For the WCHA women, the travel gets better next year with UND instead of OSU. Still, the shorter distances gives the ECAC more practical options.

And I suppose the late start by the Ivies in relation to everyone else limits the number of games they can play and still have any sort of non-conference schedule.

But back to the thread point...any predictions?

Here's your prediction:

You'll still have time to watch the sunset after the game ends, in case you wondering.

Never mind, it's a done deal as per the USCHO front.
So that keeps women's ECAC at 10 teams, women's Hockey East jumps to 7 teams.

Or rather ecac will be 11 next year, 10 following year

Harvard-Dartmouth press:

There's the Globe article I've already given its own thread. Given that I expected no more than a "Best Bets" paragraph on the women's sports page prior to this game, I'm thrilled.

USCHO rankings of the best Harvard-Dartmouth games of all-time.
Did either the 5-3 Dartmouth win @ Dartmouth in Feb. 2000 or the 5-4 Dartmouth win @ Dartmouth in Nov. 2000 deserve to be on this list? The first Dartmouth upset and the ECAC semifinal win of course were of far more significance though.

USCHO column. Will Piper be back? Hudak says maybe, Stone finds that hard to believe. Also some anonymous smack laid down on the Dartmouth power play.

Crimson's preview of the game. Stone says they won't overlook Dartmouth. The writer certainly did, but can't blame him. That's the frustrating thing about the ECAC travel partner schedule - you want to focus on one game, but you have to deal with those annoying other games in between sometimes.

Then there's a story on Piper or Apps. Piper, Piper, Piper, will she play?

Is Kirstin Anderson holding her own up at Dartmouth? We rather liked her at Bowdoin before her transfer. I've tried to look at the boxes and she has the occasional assist...but no goals, so far...

It'll depend on who the ECAC adds to replace Vermont for sure (I would say Holy Cross is definitely the most likely team on the men's side).

But with Clarkson coming into the fold, that'll give SLU a travel partner. And once Vermont leaves, Union-Dartmouth would be do-able, though certainly not preferrable.

I like the travel partner arrangement far more than the weekend series where it's possible. It's nice to see two different teams on the same weekend.

I personally like the travel partner arrangement

Supressing urge to vomit...

Union is actually an hour closer to Boston or New Haven than it is to Hanover...

How about Dartmouth/Harvard and Brown/Yale, just like in basketball. Then Clarkson/St. L and Cornell/Colgate just like in hockey. Then put Princeton with Union by process of elimination. Not like Princeton's that close to New Haven anyway.
