View Full Version : High School Players/Teams Observations
Cloquet beat Hopkins 5-0 and Burnsville beat Maple Grove 2-0 setting up the rematch Saturday at 3:15 pm. I'd like to get to Maple Grove but the weather won't be quite good enough.. icy trip home from St. Cloud tonight.
I'm stayin home and goin to the DECC to watch UMD/OSU women instead of the UMD men gettin swept in St. Cloud.
Cloquet and Burnsville tied 2-2 after the overtime Saturday.. I can't find any shootout info though (don't have a News Tribune yet..and the Star tribune online only gives 2-2 tie)

I have not really tuned in to H.S. hockey . . . but may take in a game or two this year with Cloquet and Duluth Central players committing to UMD next year. I appreciate those of you that post regularly here . . . and know where to turn when I have questions. Thanks!

Cloquet, Chisago Lakes, and Denfeld/Central are the class of the section this season. Denfeld Central is coached by Shawna Davidson and Shannon Kaspirak(sp)(she played goaltender(If I'm remembering right)for UMD when Davidson was an assistant) and someone else I can't remember offhand and they look great during their warmups especially, doing some things during the drills that you'd see UMD doing.. I think she'll have Mattila(1 L or 2?) more than ready for UMD next year :)
I missed the Cloquet/East game in Cloquet but from what I'm hearing they look down and lack scoring, especially compared to Denfeld/Central.
As a FOLLOWUP to the Maple Grove tournament.. Cloquet and Burnsville ended in a 2-2 tie.. ***AFTER*** a 5 on 5, 4 on 4, AND 3 on 3 Overtime. Burnsville I guess "gave up" and Cloquet was given the "champion" trophy instead of going to a shootout

Don't need to score bunches when you have goaltending like this...#!$&% BC !!

Knowing what I do, she wouldn't go ANYWHERE where she'd have to watch from the bench even her first year. Right now BC doesn't have a LOT of scoring punch but their top 3 scorers are Freshmen and they only lose 5 seniors. She started the season shaky the first 2 games but has been solid since

Directly quote from News Tribune today:
NORTH ST. PAUL 1, CLOQUET-ESKO-CARL. 0
Erin Shepherd scored 11:56 into the third period to break a scoreless tie to help unbeaten North St. Paul win at home.
Brianna Scavo had 14 saves for the shutout for North St. Paul (8-0).
Johanna Ellison had 24 saves for CEC (5-3-1).

Cloquet is taking on Hill Murray down there as I type this, no radio coverage up here and I don't know anything about Hill Murray hockey. So far though we(Cloquet) are 1-3 against 'Cities' teams

A couple short blurbs regarding two metro area players in the Minnesota girls high school hockey current season. Erin Cody of the Roseville Raiders, a new and unfamiliar name to me before the season started but has attracted attention via constantly appearing in recaps & box scores. Don't know how I could have missed her last season. A possible new standout player from the productive Roseville area hockey system.
Roseville
Girls hockey: The Raiders have two games this week — home Thursday against Forest Lake and Friday at Woodbury. Erin Cody had a big week for Roseville, including scoring seven goals in two games. Cody, a sophomore had five goals in a 9-0 victory over Park (Cottage Grove) in a Suburban east conference game. She added two goals and three assists in a 6-0 victory over Hastings. Erin led the team in scoring last season and leads the team again this season.
An additional blurb on Ashley Young of South St. Paul. I believe there may be some forum members with a particular interest in the exploits of Miss Young. I used to be one of them...not so much anymore. :) Okay, enuf is enuf, no more beating the long dead MSU / SSP heartbreaking, gut wrenching disappointment thing...I'm done...I promise. Please scroll down for the info on Ashley.

Jeez, eight and nine games played already? When did they start their season? In Massachusetts winter sports can't start any earlier than the first Monday after Thanksgiving. And there are only 20 regular season games, plus three tourney games in the State Championships.

I believe they start playing around the first week of November here.

So do most fall sports end early in anticipation of mother nature socking in the land of 10,000 lakes with snow and cold? And how many games do Minny girls teams play over the course of a season?

I'm posting a link to one girls high school hockey teams 2004-05 schedule just to give you an idea of the start / end dates & number of games. The schedule does not include post regular season play which would begin right after regular season completion. I think the soccer season for girls ends just prior to the start of hockey season. For boys there may be a little overlap with football season. I think most other fall sports are done just prior to hockey seasons start...and please, no complaints of my selected team from Minnesota residents. :) On the right you can see the post season sectional playoff dates and the state tourny final dates. It's all over on the third week of Feb.

The football championships are always the Friday after thanksgiving.. This season the boys first game was the Tuesday before thanksgiving. The girls' soccer championship games were held on November 3rd, 9 days before Cloquet Girls hockey opener. And then they get almost 3 weeks off after the state tournament before softball practice starts.
No complaints here :D
Cloquet plays Benilde-St. Margaret’s Friday down south. This should be an interesting game, as Cloquet's been "line juggling" since they have had some trouble scoring against the southern teams on the schedule. Ellison in net has been keeping them in all but 1 of those games that they didn't win. THEN Saturday they take on Hibbing up in Hibbing.
Another tough 'back to back' games.. in which I'll say we (Cloquet) win 1 lose 1 .. but I can't decide which 1 goes in which column. All I can do is check the scores in the newspaper though, cause I cannot pass up the UMD Men vs Sioux weekend :)..

Thanks. Ok, your regular season ends sooner and you guys play a couple more regular season games. We end the regular season mid-february, with another week for tourney games. We only have two divisions with a total of 58 teams, not counting the prep and private schools which are part of another organization, so it only takes three games to crown a champion.

Private schools in their own "league/organization?" They've been talking about doin that in Minnesota for years cause of "recruiting" on the boys side.. but that's a whole other debate.

Keeping tabs...or the race for Ms. Hockey:
Just a quick update on a few of the names more frequently mentioned ;
Gisele Marvin of Warroad currently leads all scorers with 21 goals and 28 assists for a total of 49 points in just nine games. Marvin will join Minnesota in the 2005-06 season.
Ashley Young of South Saint Paul is second in scoring with 11 goals and 29 assists for 40 points, all in ten games. Young will play for Minnesota State-Mankato in 2005-06
Kayla Hagen of Hibbing has scored 23 goals, added 11 assists for 34 total points in eight games. Hagen will be a Wisconsin Badger in 2005-06
Maggie Fisher of South Saint Paul has 16 goals and 17 assists for 33 points in ten games. Fisher will be joining her high school linemate Ashley Young at Minnesota State-Mankato in 2005-06
There are quite a few other high scoring / strong contenders of course. I'll try to post more info on some of them in the future. Information on additional players from others always welcome.
