ARM, if you read this, I emailed you an article from the Pioneer Press. Don't know if you normally read that paper. It seems the aforementioned Chelsey Jones has already attracted the attention of Badger coach Mark Johnson. As per the article, she'll be squaring off against Gopher recruit Erica McKenzie Friday night. Tried like heck to paste the URL here but my browser just wouldn't do it...or I don't know what I'm doing. If anyone else has any interest the article is at www.pioneerplanet.com, click sports, click high school & scroll down to Mike Fermoyle byline. The story is titled "Red Alert"

For anyone who might be interested, here's a rundown of current Minnesota state high school girls scoring leaders for the Mpls. /St. Paul metropolitan area. This does not include outstate conferences unfortunately. You're likely to see at least some of these girls playing D1 in the future & several listed have already committed to various D1 programs.

In the Classic Suburban, North Saint Paul's Allie Thunstrom manages to stay ahead of the awesome SSP girl's & Gopher recruit Erica McKenzie of the Suburban East probably the front runner for this years Ms. Hockey award.

And the SSP girls just keep on going

And the SSP girls just keep going & going. I don't believe I've seen a streak like this in my time. Looking at the top scorers in their conference may be an indication of how they're able to continue. A very potent offense with several viable D1 candidates among the underclassmen as well.

I'm a little surprised that they haven't lost yet; they give up a fair amount of goals. But their offense is tough to stop, because the other team can't focus on one or two players. Somebody always seems to score the big goal when they need it.

Well, I understand they have a game coming up, this weekend at Wakota I think against the number 1 class A team Warroad. Could this be the end ??

I'm guessing that when they finally lose, it will be to a team that plays tight defense and has good depth. Maybe Anoka, Elk River, Apple Valley. Of the class A schools, I'd think BSM would have the best chance against SSP.

I checked the stats for Kayla Hagen, jr from Hibbing, to see how she was scoring without Nichols. She is currently at 38-24=62. They do play a good number of weaker teams, but I notice she did have all four goals in a 4-3 win over Eagen in December.

I haven't heard much about her, but the top scorer seems to be Angie Keseley, jr St. Louis Park, with 56-26=82. It is possible that someone from a school like Warroad that isn't listed on the Star Trib site might have more points, but I doubt it. Eighty-two at this point of the season is a rather high number.

I think the current class of juniors might be the best recruiting class in a while. Add those two to Fisher/Nelson/Young of SSP, Ellison from Cloquet, McCarthy of Eden Prairie.

ARM, I agree with the increased likelihood of a stronger class AA team ending the streak & Benilde St. Margaret being a more likely candidate from class A as it seems BSM is responsible for Warroads 2 losses this season. Warroad does have a couple girls with high point totals but the day's when the small outstate school's can compete with the larger metro school's may be gone. At times I'm still stuck in the boy's single class tourny mode of days gone by when the small northern schools could go toe to toe with the larger metro schools...not terribly relevant to the girl's. Not that it couldn't happen tho.

I would think SSP's biggest enemy now might be a brief moment of complacency combined with every team they play dreaming of being the team to end the streak and getting up for them. I don't know how they've avoided that to this point.

You're right about the junior class being quite strong, I would add the sophomore class behind them seems to have some very talented girls too. I pasted a link to the MSHSL girls hockey page where you can check stats of some outstate teams / players not normally published in metro media but the info is sketchy at best.

Thanks for the link. I see that Warroad's top two scorers are forwards Gisele Marvin, jr: 39-40=79, and Holly Roberts, so: 42-32=74. Yet another junior and sophomore. I believe that the third player on that line is jr Martie Selvog. I remember Marvin's name showing up on USA development camp rosters. I would think that the problem they will have against SSP is matching up with the second line.

SSP girls remove all controversy. Who would have thought any team could play 80 GAMES without a loss. This team, or perhaps one of the two immediately prior editions must warrant serious consideration as best Minnesota high school hockey team ever, boys or girls...with the John Mayasich era Eveleth team being the other most likely contender. Hats off to the South St. Paul girls...way to go ladies !!!

A short story featuring one of SSP's key player's in the record breaking unbeaten streak who has taken the lead in Classic Suburban scoring race.

Also, this week's scoring summary. Two conferences normally listed are missing for some reason. All in all, there is a pretty good collection of high scoring young ladies this season.

When do the colleges make their official announcements for womens recruits? I have yet to see any writeups regarding hockey. I noticed football today.

ARM, You're right, it's a shame she can't suit up for the Goph's right now...this weekend would be good. Thanks to Erica, my old high school is back in the hunt for at least a share of the conference title.

...and the SSP blurb. A player I'm not familiar with. Seemingly there is no end to the talent in South St. Paul.

Just a comment:
On another thread about prep schools, a dad is asking about prep vs public school hockey. Many replies are telling dad about the top academic schools. I did not see Cushing Academy ever mentioned, but has anyone noticed that the school has two players going to Brown, Silverman and Moore and now one going to Harvard-Brady.

For hockey, the early signing period was a week in November. The late signing period begins April 14. Once the schools receive the signed National Letter of Intent, they determine the timing of their announcements.

An extremely impressive list of young hockey players!

I know that Holznagel and Drazen have signed letters for UMD and remember that Storh went with MSU (!) . . . which of the others has the WCHA got for next season??

Graft was the only name on the list I was not familiar with.

It's nice to see the talent stay in the area !

Bunker is going to MSU-M. Palkie, Philipczyk, McKenzie, and Miller will be Gophers. Keys has been near the top of the scoring list every year; I'd expect her to play D-I, but I haven't heard that she is signed.
