SSP administers a 6-1 thumping to NSP tonight. That Maverick line is something to watch. Gopher coach H in attendance...watchin' the three that got away...and the one that better not. ;)
I sure wish South St. Paul was playing us again this year during the season. We sure enjoyed those games. Hopefully we can play at State again. CEC vs South St. Paul generated some great games in the past.

I hope so too. I remember (somewhat vaguely now unfortunately) the great game they played for the title. I'm looking forward to watching several teams, including C/E/C & Hibbing in the Schwan Cup & Kaposia Classic tournaments. Probably my only opportunity to see the top northern teams, Hibbing, C/E/C & Warroad outside the state tournament. Good luck in the Schwan Cup. I see it's C/E/C vs. NSP in the opener...watch out for "Thunder." ;)
I think Cloquet will be fine against 'NSP'.. but I'm worried more about their Second game long as both teams win, against Stillwater.. I think everyone's amazed at the Stillwater goaltender.. the 7th grader I think she was? Too bad I'll be out of the state for Christmas cause those 2 games would be great to watch..

A little shuffling among the top scorers. MSU-M recruit Ashley Young wrestles the scoring lead from UM recruit Gigi Marvin, albeit with three more games played. Wisconsin recruits Hagen & Keseley at 4 and 5 respectively.

dhmn- Stillwater 7th grade goalie, Marah Sobczak may have come back down to earth some since the early trip through the northland. A few softies but solid play overall & still capable of big games. The Ponies have picked up their scoring of late with the 2nd line looking better each time out.
Edit: An apparent update after my initial post has Warroads Gigi Marvin as the top scorer once again.

haha thanks for mentioning that cause I couldn't remember her name for anything.. her defense wasn't that good here in Cloquet so she had to make those saves that she did up here... but the 'point blank' saves on Maunu's solo rushes right in front of the net were some of the best I've seen any goaltender make at the high school level .. boys OR girls

As the goalie coach from Cloquet, I think your overstating Sobczak's ability. She did a nice job as a 7th grader, but she has many flaws to overcome that I have seen in her technique. She is strong on her glove, but that is about it. We shot all of our shots glove high including Maunu's one rush. I told the girls not to shoot there and of course that is where they shot. In looking at her stats for the year, we are the only team she has shut out with 18 saves. The rest of her games look a little shaky. She has a 880 saves % and a 2.56 GAA for the season so far. She has games like 3 goals and 8 saves against Woodbury, 4 goals and 16 saves against Hill Murray, 3 goals and 16 saves against Forest Lake, 4 goals and 19 saves against Hastings, 4 goals and 22 saves against Hibbing, etc. I would love for our team to play Stillwater again. That was one of our first games and I think our girls have improved. We were outshot 41 to 18 in that game. I think it would be different if we played again.

Get past North St. Paul and you may get your wish...if Stillwater can do their part and beat Hill Murray in their first game. Stillwater lost to HM 4-3 a short time ago.

Just because I have too much time on my hands, or for a mix of posterity & misc. etcetera on players occasionally mentioned in this thread...

You know a lot more about hockey than most of us do so you have an advantage over the "just fans" among us .. :D I did say a couple weeks after that game though that the rematch set up at Schwan's with Maunu NOT focusing on football, and the line combinations more SET would be great. I wonder how a game at Mariucci against them will differ in "gameplan" than at the CARC(I hate that name)
I'd love to see a Stillwater 2nd round game but won't be in the state again until the championship game day :)

I've got too much time on MY hands now.. with the eBay Christmas season over and a 10 hour drive to Kansas for Christmas coming up.. just sitting around the past couple days :p
I understand that the Woburn High team is stacked with talent, including several D1 prospects (Colleen Sanborn being one), and could again run the table in Massachusetts.

Some brief notes on the Minnesota girls high school hockey holiday tournaments which begin play today...
HIGH SCHOOL HOLIDAY TOURNAMENTS
KAPOSIA CLASSIC
When: Thursday to Saturday
Where: Wakota Arena
Teams: Anoka, Blake, Blaine, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Hibbing, Roseville, South St. Paul.
Players to watch: Eden Prairie: Megan McCarthy, Megan Pizon; South St. Paul: Maggie Fisher, Ashley Young, Felicia Nelson; Blaine: Sammy Nixon; Anoka: Erin Seman. Chaska: Lindsay Block; Roseville: Erin Cody.
Why go: This field is better than the state tournament's. Look for a championship matchup between No. 1 Eden Prairie and No. 2 South St. Paul. The line of Fisher-Young-Nelson, which has accounted for 140 points, appears to just be warming up for South St. Paul, which hasn't forgotten who snapped its state-record winning streak last year. (It was Eden Prairie in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.)
SCHWAN CUP
When: Today-Wednesday
Where: Ridder Arena, Mariucci Arena
Teams: The Blue Division has North St. Paul, Wayzata, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, Warroad, Benilde-St. Margaret's, Stillwater, Hill-Murray, Elk River.
Players to watch: North St. Paul: Allie Thunstrom, Caitlin Hogan, Breanna Scavo; Hill-Murray: Kelsey Fletcher, Colleen Conway; Stillwater: Chelsey Jones, Callie Dahl; Rachel Zilles; Cloquet-Esko-Carlton: Johanna Ellison.
Why go: This tournament is just a small step down in caliber from the Kaposia Classic. It features Elk River and North St. Paul, the entrants in last season's Class AA state championship game won by the Elks. In last season's Schwan Cup title game, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, anchored by two-time all-state goalie Ellison, defeated Benilde-St. Margaret's. The Red Knights rebounded less than two months later to win the Class A title.

Some additional Minnesota girls high school hockey notes (metro area) and some Schwan Cup holiday tournament recaps...
DAKOTA COUNTY
Girls hockey: Seven of eight teams in the Kaposia Classic tournament this week at Wakota Arena are ranked among the state's top 10 in either Class AA or Class A. The field includes the top two in Class AA: No. 1 Eden Prairie and No. 2 South St. Paul.
Eden Prairie will open the tournament against Blake, No. 6 in Class A, at 1 p.m. Thursday. The second quarterfinal at 3 p.m. will pit Hibbing (No. 2, Class A) against Anoka (No. 6, Class AA).
Blaine (No. 5, Class AA) takes on unranked Chaska at 6 p.m. The host team from South St. Paul plays Roseville (No. 7, AA) at 8 p.m.
The Kaposia also has six of the top 12 scorers in the Minnesota.
Hibbing's Kayla Hagen, who scored seven goals last week in a 9-1 victory over Grand Rapids, leads the state in goals (39) and is second in points (57). St. Louis Park's Angie Keseley is first with 58.
Ashley Young of South St. Paul is tied for third with New Prague's Jenna Kilpatrick. Young has 55 points (15 goals, 40 assists).
Young's teammate Maggie Fisher is sixth with 48 points (25 goals, 23 assists), and Eden Prairie teammates Meaghan Pezon (26 goals, 21 assists) and Megan McCarthy (28 goals, 19 assists) are tied for seventh with 47 points. South St. Paul's Felicia Nelson, who plays on the same line with Young and Fisher, is 12th with 41 points (19 goals, 22 assists).
