I don't think the third line played much that game. for a 16 yr. old to even come close to the top line on the U is an overachievement. At the end of the year I would rather have a top scorer than a player who looks good.Someone obersevd high school and club level play may not be a good indicator to how a player will do at div 1 level. As a high school student in 5 games 2G, 2A at div 1 already better than some current players.

You are comparing apples to oranges. It is not us you have to convince but the scouts.

the actual facts from stats.com/hockey/scfahl is as follows, #1 julia staszewski played 20 games 17 goals 21 assists 38 points total, #2 cammi granato 13 games 13 goals 23 assists 36 points total,....#4 brooke whitney 17 games 18 goals 10 assists 28 points total,....# 7 cassie reid 19 games 20 goals 3 assists total 23 points total....stats can say pretty much anything you want them to say when all the facts are not presented.

I agree with the others on this thread, and obviously I think we are talking about two different players. As for the case of Reid, the stats that were originally posted by SteelerHockey were in a little deceiving. The plug for Reid made it seem like she had more points than Whitney and Granato, when in fact she had far less total points than the two. To be honest, It woulod not matter if she outscored the two by 25 points to me. I have seen her play. In her case the College she will be playing for speaks for her talents at the D-1 level. I think the post was written by someone wanting to promote the Steelers organization. To be proud to about a player moving on to the next level is expected. To over hype the player when others have seen her play is a little over board.
JROCK- At this point I think you more than anyone should be able to answer your own question about the "Promise" this player has. I would assume with her being a Junior, that any schools that are legitimately interested in recruiting her have already sent a letter and a player profile. Hopefully you have already spoken with these coaches initiated by calls made by you. I'm sure any Coaches interested in her will make that known in conversation. I'm sure they will be especially interested in her if she has that high SAT score. Scholarship money is a whole nother issue.

Thanks Skat for your input . I was sort of confused where part of this post was going. I sincerely did not intend to compare or dis any player. I only wanted to get some input on a part of a players package and value of div 1 play .

If their intention was not to compare Reid with Whitney or Granato, then why even mention their names in the post?? Why not just give her stats and leave it at that??
As far as 20 goals being an accomplishment, i would beg do differ. I'm not a big stat person anyway, but surely the different competition level in the leagues really can play big in a players stats and perceived ability. Point: I noticed that the Steelers did not win a game at the Thoroughbread tournament this year (4 games) Some of the teams were questionable except for the Thoroughbreads and the Wild who are regulars at the USA Nationals. I would give more weight to her perfromances against those two teams than a league of which I am not familiar, no matter who used to play in it 7-12 years ago. I am assuming that neither Granato or Whitney currently play in the league as the original post implies also.

Your assumption is incorrect. This season, both Granato and Whitney played in the South Coast Female Amateur Hockey League (SCFAHL) Senior AAA division. Reid was the leading goal scorer in that division/league.
The Steelers ended up winning BC Provincials, and Reid was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
The Steelers were BC's representatives at Esso Nationals, where they lost in the quarter finals to the Edmonton Chimos in double overtime.
The Steelers did not send their "A" team to the Thoroughbred tournament this year.
Stats, in isolation, are meaningless, so I tried to provide a sense of how strong the league is by including two former college players who are currently playing in the league, and comparing their goal totals.

I am quite curious, how many of these posters have actually seen REID play. I saw her in Shattuck and she is a very tenacious player that has a very nice touch around the net. She will make a good D-1 player. The heart and intensity she brings would help any club.

yes the steelers did win the provincials, however cammi granato was not around for the weekend, and there was a little game playing as to how they actually did advance to the finals, (provincials), and the steelers did not win a game in the canadians, one more thing what was reid stats for the canadain tourney:confused:

According to the Hockey Canada website she had 2 goals and 1 assist in 6 ganes. The team only scored 8 goals in those 6 games so I would consider that a good stat. BC was in the A Pool so they did play against all the best that was in the tourney.

Education First.
I have seen her play. unfortunately I don't share your views on her talents. I think she was in the top 5 for scoring at Shattuck, but I don't think she was any near the player or had the Stats of say Vicki Davis, Rush, Payton or Kelli. Those are all great players who in my opinion don't hold a candle to Whitney or Granato. Just curious as to why she left Shattuck her Senior year. I'm sure that was a big question that was on the mind of the College scouting her.

I will not disagree with you on this one. I think that these players were clearly better. I have not seen her at all this year though so I cannot say how she has improved.

This is again an area that you have a point but the point I think you are missing is the age differance and how good was GRANATO or WHITNEY when they were these other players age. That I do not know as I never saw them play as 19-20 year olds.
The other point that I would like to make is these are different style players and in order for a team to win they cannot have a roster of all GRANATO's or DAVIS'S they need all types of players and REID is a good grinding player that can also put the puck in the net. (at least when I saw her at Shattuck). I have seen some other names come accross this thread that i would question much more than REID.
On anopther note speaking of DAVIS I think that she will help WISC. alot and they really seem to be positioning themselves nicely for next year. I think that was a great catch by them.

Reid did not return to Shattuck for her senior year due to some religious and some financial reasons. Her grade 10 year was successful, but grade 11 was difficult for her personally and and for her family.
As a person, she is delightful, an asset to any team structure and an excellent student. As a player, she gives 100% all the time - has an uncontestable work ethic. Her success rate will probably always be affected by her stature - she is small for a hockey player. She reads the ice well, and a scrapper in front of the net; but may have some difficulty when she hits 'the big time' of NCAA hockey.
I think it's premature to make comparisons to Granato or Whitney. GIve her a couple of years.

Just kidding laker man.

YES your sources are infact CORRECT about this player from ohio! they got one of the greatest players ohio has seen in years. she should be a TRUE asset to Mercyhurst and should be a player to watch as she matures in this magnificent college ambiance. there is no doubt in my mind that she will be one of the top rookies next year and a definite possibility for rookie of the year. shes a BEAST and you'll sure know it when she steps on the ice.

Who did this "Beast" play for this year? Was it the Ohio Flames?
Is the assumption that she is even better than Monteleoni who is a F at Wosconsin this year?

yes she does play for the flames and ive had the honor of watching them both play and MONTELEONE (which is the correct spelling ) is a great player but i have to say that watching this STUD play is a treat. im not saying that either one is better than the other, because they are two different types of players, just that mercyhurst is VERY lucky that they could get their hands on this player before anyone else.

I had the opp/ to see the flames several times this year. I did notice that the team did not have nearly the depth that it has had in the past. With the team finishing in 9th place out of 10 teams and scoring only 30 goals I was wondering if this "STUD" spent part of the year hurt. I saw them several times play and did not see anyone like you have been describing. Does this person have a name?
Sorry about mispelling Pheobe's name. Now that was a player that was fun to watch.
