Box score (http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0708/boxes/wmrcvaf1.s28)

Looks as if Vaughn had a little bit of a short bench...but managed to stay pretty even in shoots

Miss Prough played defense tonight....after seeing the first game, to you think that this is permanent?

Thanks MIC for all the updates. Great for Courtney and all the Lakers. I agree Bendus is doing very nicely.

The official scorekeepers picked Aarts as the 3rd star and I would have agreed with that but the goaltending of Drennen was really that good tonight.

Also, they picked Dianoski as the 2nd star. She played and skated hard so I can understand that but really Agosta just still amazes me with what she can do on the ice. She created many shots for her teammates and for herself. That is why I gave her my 2nd star.

She is a defenseman, where else would you expect her to play? :p

Freshman sparks 'Hurst women

BY RON LEONARDI
ron.leonardi@timesnews.com [more details]

At 5 feet 1 inch tall, Vicki Bendus is the shortest player on the Mercyhurst College women's hockey team.

And believe her when she says she's heard every small joke.

"It's always little Bender or little (squirt)," she said, laughing. "People always see you as maybe being a little smaller and they write you off a bit, but you have to go out there and work hard and show them what you can do."

In her debut with the No. 2-ranked Lakers on Friday, the speedy freshman forward scored twice and saw substantial playing time on the penalty-kill in Mercyhurst's 3-1 exhibition victory over the Vaughan Flames before 602 fans at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Bendus, a native of Wasaga Beach, Ontario, jammed in a rebound in the first period and scored the winning goal at 3 minutes, 32 seconds of the third period.

Camped in front of the net, Bendus took a perfect right-corner centering pass from sophomore forward Meghan Agosta and scored into an open net past Vaughan goalie Melanie Quinn.

"I didn't expect to contribute so much right off the bat, but I was lucky to make some nice plays," Bender said. "Meghan gave me that perfect pass. You couldn't ask for anything more than that."

Bendus and Agosta also shared a lot of time on the penalty-kill as the Lakers gave up one power-play goal in eight chances.

"I've always really liked penalty-killing," said Bendus, who was on the ice for all three Mercyhurst goals. "It makes you a better, more well-rounded hockey player, and doing it with Meghan, there's always that opportunity to get that short-handed goal. If that puck squirts out, she's gone. It was nice to be able to play with her in that role."

Bendus played last season with the Aurora Panthers of the Ontario Provincial Junior Women's Hockey League and was the league's third-leading scorer with 45 points (23 goals, 22 assists) in 27 games. She chose Mercyhurst over New Hampshire and Clarkson.

"It's not the size of the dog, it's the size of the fight in the dog," coach Michael Sisti said of his freshman recruit. "We thought Bendus could do a lot of the things that (graduated forward) Julia Colizza did for us. That's saying a lot, but if one game is any indication, we definitely think she did everything we brought her in to do. I think she's going to fit in well."

She has played both foward and D. I think she is a better D. Very offensive minded.

One period in the books and RMU found a way to hold the high power offense of Mercyhurst scoreless. The announcers haven't said what the shots on goal were but I am guessing MC had the advantage.

Has anyone found live stats anywhere for the MC-RMU game? I have the audio broadcast.
thanks.

12:42 of the 2nd Ayearst scores. The announcement was the assist to Drennen but I doubt that happened since she is the backup goalie tonight and you could hear the MC bench on the radio start laughing when the announcement was made. MC right on the powerplay as they drop the puck after the goal.

These announcers have not mentioned a goalie change so I agree can't be a Drennen assist unless she's in on defense (which she does play) and we don't know it..That would be highly unusual. My guess is it was Dianoski whose number is 33 close enough to miss read as Drennen's 35.
Wish we had those stats.

You know, after the Ayearst goal I swear I heard the announcers say Drennen dumps the puck a couple times. Weird:confused:

Scoring changes Jones got the lone assist on the first goal and Jarrell scored the 2nd goal with an assist from Erickson

Agosta scores an unassisted empty netter with 1:15 to go. Great job ladies (both teams). Maine comes to town this weekend for a pair. Good luck Lakers.
