Agreed, Trillium, I knew more than I let on in my previous post, hoping that it wouldn't develop further. The silver lining is that the general case problem was brought to light -- it doesn't matter if a staff can get you into a given university if the NCAA clearinghouse won't allow the student-athlete to play. Hopefully this will help educate some younger potential players and their parents. I agree that there is nothing to be gained from invading the privacy of any specific individual.

I wish parents would realize that if they funneled more money into tutors instead of fancy home arenas and hockey schools, their children would be far better served in the end. They don't call them "student athletes" for nothing.

Funny you should mention that, as it came up in a conversation recently, and an idea was put forward to run tutoring sessions and test prep sessions in conjunction with skill development programs at a local rink.

Hey MIC or anyone else...tell us about the Vaughn Flames. MC will play their exhibition game against them on the 28th..I was told by a player that MC grad, Ashley Pendleton, plays for them. What else do we know?

You can find the web site for the VAUGHAN FLAMES at

http://www.vgha.ca/home.asp

Sorry I am not very familiar with the organization other than their Midget AA team played a team from the Madison area a few years back.

Thank you. I had looked at that site but it didn't seem like it could be the right place. Perhaps.

I wondered if it might not be. Thank you for the info. I'll go looking to see what's up for NWHL.

The NWHL is not operating this year. As a result the players got together and organized their own league (CWHL I think) and that is what the Vaughn team is a part of.

thanks. I also knew something about that but did not have a name and have not retained elusive snippets of info as they came by (age or complexity of life...I suppose). I suppose there is no website????

Just like last year's NWHL all over again. It's late September and still no website, no schedule, no clear public announcements by any of the alleged teams. Only snippets from the rumour mill. What a shame.

While the Eastern conference is scrambling to reorganize, the Western teams appear to be progressing very well through their training camps and have attracted a lot of talent (perhaps the disarray in the East has contributed to the interest in the better organized western teams). A lot of the Olympic calibre talent seems to have migrated again to two teams: Calgary and Minnesota, but Edmonton has attracted some graduating UofAlberta players and the whole conference seems to be improved. See www.westernwomenshockeyleague.com.

J. McGuire spoke to nearly 125 people last night at the Ambassador Suites.

McGuire Delights Crowd at 20th Annual Mercyhurst Hockey Dinner

Sept. 25, 2007

Erie, Pa. -

National Hockey League Director of Central Scouting E.J. McGuire was the guest speaker Monday night at the 20th Annual Mercyhurst College Hockey Media Night held for the first time ever at the Ambassador on Upper Peach Street.

McGuire's 20 minute speech followed season previews by Mercyhurst men's hockey coach Rick Gotkin and women's coach Michael Sisti.

McGuire has coached at every level of hockey including two stints in Philadelphia with the Flyers [1984-88, with two trips to the Stanley Cup Finals as assistant to NHL Coach-of-the-Year (1985) Mike Keenan; and from 2000-02 under NHL Coach-of-the-Year Bill Barber (2001)]. He also held NHL assistant coaching jobs with the Chicago Blackhawks (1988-91) and Ottawa Senators (1992-95). McGuire also was a head coach in Canadian Major Junior Hockey (Guelph Storm, 1995-97), and in the American Hockey League (Maine Mariners, (1991-92) and Hartford WolfPack (1997-2000).

The Mercyhurst women begin their 2007-08 season Friday, September 28, with a 7pm exhibition game against the Vaughan (Canada) Flames. A number of Mercyhurst alums play for the Flames. Before the game, the 2006-07 team will receive its College Hockey America (CHA) championship rings.

Looks like some great games in the first couple of months. After Maine and BU come to town, I'd imagine the trip to Duluth will be their first big test. Is that series being webcast? Those two games with the Bulldogs should be great competition and a dynamite series.

Great info on the Lakers. The first half is going to have it's share of early season drama. The Lakers have Duluth and UNH for 4 games; SLU opens the season with UNH for a pair at Appleton and then closes out the first half hosting Duluth for a pair; and the Wildcats host Wisconsin in November for a two game set in addition to the SLU/Laker sets.

If my math is half way straight, that's 10 games between the preseason top five. Wow! That doesn't include the Lakers 6 contests versus Colgate, Princeton and Dartmouth, or several early season matchups between SLU and Harvard/Dartmouth, or UNH facing Harvard for a single and a pair of early season league games with BC. The Eagles biggest non league tests come after the Christmas break when they host SLU for a pair, face off with BC and then travel to Minnesota for a pair.

Looks like we're in for some great hockey between now and Christmas.

And why would Sisti care if the Eagles were playing the Eagles? If anything you would want to pass it along to Stone and Staff considering that weekend the Eagles are slated to play Harvard.
