who in their right mind wants to face Mercyhurst if they need non-league competition that may have NCAA ramifications down the line,.....no one, I would think

Your assertion is ridiculous. Minnesota played Mercyhurst last year, and in Erie at that. According to the game commentator on last night's webcast, UMD and Mercyhurst are scheduled for next year.

As long as the "Last 16 Games" criteria remains in the NCAA selection process, teams will avoid playing elite non-conference opponents late in the season. Yes, you must play other good teams to get in the tournament, but these games will only happen early in the season.

Only two non-conference games were played against NCAA tourney teams this year after Jan 1, StL at BC (1/5) and UNH at Dart (1/20), and only the UNH/Dart game counted towards a teams last 16.

If the NCAA eliminated this criteria, or modified it to reward late non-conference action, you would see teams with different schedules.

That has been one of the interesting angles when teams meet at the Frozen Four after playing early in the year -- who has improved the most since their first meeting.

I just wanted to post a comment about Coach Maria Lewis. I play for the Ohio State Women's club team and she came on as a coach for us this season. I can't tell you how valuable her hockey knowledge was to our team. She brought so much experience to the table. Being a goalie, I didn't get to interact with her as much as I would have liked. But when I did, she was awesome. I think after practice one day, I stayed and we talked for like 20 minutes about everything. My whole team is going to miss her. I wish her well to wherever she goes next.

Maria Lewis is a class act no doubt. Is she leaving OSU? I wonder what she has planned and wonder if she has applied to coach somewhere.

Yes indeed you were lucky to have a coach like Maria Lewis.
Would make a great coach at UND????

Didn't realize there was an opening at UND. I wonder if Paul Collontino, asst. at Mercyhurst, would go back to UND. Either one would be a good choice.

I don't think its been "Officially" posted as of yet as there is no mention of it on the NCAA Employment/Jobs site. Its gonna take a special coach to get things turned around in Grand Forks. I am not to familliar with either Collontino or Maria Lewis, other than there reputations, but anyone that would welcome the challange with open arms should certainly be given a shot at it. I am not sure what the status is with the current coach and his Interim title.

MIC,

If Collontino left for a Head Coaching job would it be safe to say some of the players would go with him? or What would his loss mean to the 'hurst?

Actually the job has been posted at UND for a while now and should be filled shortly. According to the Grand Forks Herald Paul Collontino has applied. They upped the salary to 90,000+ which tells me they are serious about attracting top applicants.

I hope it's Mr. Collontino ultimately....rather than the gentleman from SSM. My friend MNhockeyfan09 keeps messin' with my head via repeated scary innuendo regarding a potential SSM coach / player connection for the Sioux. ;)

Seriously, I've heard Paul Collontino was well liked, respected and highly regarded during his stint as an asst. coach at UND.

I don't think anyone would follow him to ND should he get the job. At least not an impact player. Dionoski left UND 2 seasons ago and followed him to Mercyhurst but I just can't see anyone leaving the Laker program to play at UND.

It is absurd to suggest that top teams are trying to avoid Mercyhurst. This year the Lakers put together an outstanding schedule and did very very well against top teams. They played 8 ECACHL teams including 6 of the top 7 teams, and they played 5 Hockey East teams including all of the top 4! Unfortunately, this all comes in the first half of the year, leaving them with only conference games down the stretch. Most conferences arrange their schedules such that there is a steady diet of conference games in January and February which is the period when the Lakers could really use some of those tough non-conference games to sharpen them for the NCAAs. I would like to see the leagues start their conf scheds earlier and leave at least a couple of weekends open in January and February for non-conference games. It would not only help teams like Mercyhurst to balance their schedule out better, it would help the NCAA selection process.

Absolutely right. The top teams in the east seem to make it a priority to get the best competition on their schedules. Mercyhurst plays about as grueling a non conference schedule as they can. I know they've travelled to Durham the past couple of years. One of our board members at UNH told me that they'd got an unofficial glimpse of the Wildcat schedule for '08 and it included a weekend in Erie. The back end schedule will always be league vs non league more because that's when the league's load up their schedule, not because top teams are trying to avoid each other.
I don't know all the specifics and dates, but I think UNH is playing SLU again twice, Wisconsin twice, the Lakers twice and I'm sure they've got Harvard and Dartmouth mixed in again. I'm sure the Lakers have the majority of the top teams from this year on their schedule for '08 as well.
I don't see many of the top clubs avoiding these matchups. There's too much at stake and with parity on the rise, avoiding them puts your program in jeopardy of being unfairly slighted come selection time. At least if you play enough of them, you can make your own bed so to speak.

2008 will feature a number of East-West matchups, some that we tend to see most years but a number of fresh ones as well. Several of the coaches have been kind enough to pass along their nonconf already.

I posted this on the Div. I recruit thread but I wanted it here as well. This was in todays Erie Times News.

'Hurst women's hockey team adds recruit from Michigan

Mercyhurst College women's hockey coach Michael Sisti has added an eighth recruit for the 2007-08 roster with the signing of Geena Prough of Farmington, Mich.

Prough, a 5-foot, 4-inch forward/defender, spent last season playing for Lawrence Academy Prep (Mass.), which plays in a Tier 1 league.

Prough was a first-team, all-league choice in 2004-05 and 2006-07.

She scored 112 points at Lawrence with 58 goals and 54 assists.

I have no desire to jinx the Lakers by getting expectations too high, too soon, but they have to be a clear favorite for #1 right out of the gate for the coming season. The challenge for any team with such a wealth of talent is always how to maintain and build on the competitive edge as the season progresses. Should be fun to watch, though, and if I lived anywhere close I would have marked all of their home games on my calendar by now.

There are about a half dozen teams that have a bunch of players with experience on various national teams, either senior or U-22. All of the meetings between such programs will be huge in sorting out the rankings (MC vs. UMD, UW vs. UNH, etc.)
