Mercyhurst Inks Five During Early Signing Period
Lakers add three defenders and two forwards
Nov. 15, 2006
Erie, Pa. - Head coach Michael Sisti announced today that five players have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers next season at Mercyhurst College. The five include defenders Melissa Lacroix, Melanie Rothon and Cassea Schols and forwards Vicki Bendus and Ashley Cockell.
Lacroix (Penetanguishene, Ontario) is playing for the Toronto Jr. Aeros this season and has a goal and an assist in nine games. Last season, she contributed four goals and eight helpers in 29 games. Lacroix also played for Team Ontario Blue last season at the Women's U18 Championship in Canada.
Rothon has participated in the Canadian National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) for the last two seasons. The Newmarket, Ontario native visited Erie in September as a member of the Durham Lightning, whose roster included former Mercyhurst players Teresa Marchese, Desi Clark, and Danielle Lansing. Prior to Durham, Rothon played two years for the Toronto Jr. Aeros. The Aeros were League Champs, Playoff Champs, and Provincial Champs in one of her two seasons there. She also was a two-time member of Team Ontario Red at the U18 Championship. Her team won the gold medal both times. Last year, Rothon won Rookie of the Year for Durham as a 16-year old.
Schols (Edmonton, Alberta) has played the last three years for the Edmonton Chimos in the NWHL. She is off to her best start with the Chimos this season with a goal and five assists in five regular season games and six points in exhibition play. Schols was the assistant captain for Team Alberta in 2005 and is hoping to continue with the program for the Canada winter games in March 2007. She was invited to Team Canada's U22 June camp and hopes to play for Team Canada in the future.
Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ontario) is a member of the Aurora Jr. Panthers and played for Team Ontario Red's championship squad last season at the women's U18 event. She performed for Team Ontario Blue the year before. Bendus has ten goals and four assists in eight games this season. Last year, she accumulated 27 goals and 22 assists in 29 games.
Cockell, like Schols, competes with the Edmonto Chimos. The Fort Assiniboine, Alberta native has scored ten points (3g, 7a) in ten games this season. She was also a member of Team Alberta in 2005.
"The coaching staff, headed by Paul Colontino and Aaron Kemp, did another terrific job in getting these five quality players", noted Sisti. "We'll have some holes to fill next year and I'm confident all these people will fit right into our system."
Just a little side note. I have seen Bendus play. She reminds me a little bit of Ashley Riggs from Niagara. Very small but pretty good.
