Mercyhurst is stepping up the attention to hockey. I think this is going to be very helpful to them-a director of hockey operations with attention to fundraising and marketing.

John is a great person and very experienced.

John is a class guy. This only bodes well for the Lakers.

I was up at the Ice Center today and the ladies were on the ice doing some scrimmaging. Man they look good. I was impressed with the team speed and how smooth they look already. I would have thought they would be sloppy this early but passes were crisp, skating was sharp and goaltending looked solid. It was the first time I got to see the freshman and they looked pretty decent. Agosta is definately going to take this team to the next level. I am not sure but they will be pre-season (scrimmage ?) game next weekend. I am going to have to get up there again to watch. I can't believe were starting up already.

After first, according to live stats, it's 2-1 Mercyhurst. Clark in goal for ED and Hoser for MC. MC goals by Stephanie Jones and Jill Nugent. A whole lot of penalities as people have predicted--ten, with each team having five. MIC are you there to report?

Actually, I was there and just got back home. Here is my take on the game.

First, goaltending: Drennen looked better than Hosier in my opinion. Both goals given up by Hosier should have been stopped. It may have had something to do with the new pads she was wearing but I thought they were both soft. Drennen didn't have to make any great saves, Hosier made a fantastic save in the 2nd. Drennen does a great job of directing while she is out there and was extremely focused. I thought she did a better job of not giving up second chance shots than Hosier did.

Second, defense: Last year at the beginning of the year the Laker defense didn't look great to say the least. Today, they played well. There were times early where I got a little nervous when we didnt do a great job of clearing the puck from just outside the crease but the defense look stronger as the game progressed. I hope this is a sign that they will play good defense early in the season.

Last, offense: Um, well, MEGHAN AGOSTA is going to make a huge impact this year for the Lakers. She had at least 2 breakaway opportunities and one that was whistled dead because of a questionable penalty behind the play. She logged a lot of ice time and was incredible. Agosta has the fastest wrist shot I have ever seen from a female. Her goal against ex-Laker Desi Clark was a beutiful goal. She skated in on Clark and wristed one past her before she even moved her glove. I also thought Lorsell(sp) had some nice shots from long range and I like her spunk. Val Chouinard looked very good as well. Actually, the line of Jones, Chouinard and Agosta will be as good as any scoring line in the country.

Nice to have the update. I've been ready for hockey to start for quite awhile. Next week it's on to Maine! And one game will be broadcast.! I can hardly wait. Thanks MIC

My comments about the game vs. Dolphins...

I agree with MIC's goaltending review. Neither goalie grabbed the starting job. Drenned didn't get enough work to really show her stuff, however.

The defense played like it was the first game of the season. This game was important so they could gell a little. The freshman Malmstrom had some ackward plays, but that is what you get with freshmen in their first few games. They will be fine. The five returning defensemen will anchor the defense until Malmstrom is more comfortable.

I would now like to disagree with MICZamboni (please don't run me over). Jones/Chouinard/BOURBEAU will be one of the top lines in the country. They may not score the most goals, but the will also play great defense, shutting down the other teams top line. Agosta/Colizza (or Erikson)/TBD will make an excellent second line.

In terms of the impact of Agosta, I will reserve judgement on what her impact to the team will be after I see her play a regular season game (or two). She has a great shot, and she can skate, but I will wait to she how she fits in on a team that has never truly had someone who can score like her. Maybe I am being overly critical becuase she is an Olympian (trademark IOC, COC, USOC etc.) and my expectations are high, but there were a few times last night a pass would have been better than the shot, IMO.

Why is Desi Clark not on the Canadian National Team (or at least mentioned)? And why is her name not on the Mercyhurst All-American Banner at the Mercyhurst Ice Center?

Didn't see Wendell in the collegehockeystats box...she's on the Dolphin roster right?

When I watched Live Stats her name was not on the roster. Don't think she was there.

Wendell was a scratch. I never heard why.

Sounds like the Mercyhurst Lakers have this one in hand. It's nice to hear the Lakers are scoring some goals without having to have Agosta score any points. I didn't hear the first 2 1/2 periods but it sounds like Mercyhurst is dominating play. I am curious as to how Maine scored their goals. Did Hosier give up rebounds again or what?

I am guessing the score tomorrow will be 4-0 in favor of the Lakers.

I am assuming you are asking about my prediction of 4-0. I think Maine will play a little better tomorrow now that they have a game under there belts. Mercyhurst will still dominate.

Miczamboni what is your issue with Hosier? Really it is getting tiresome. We have all heard your constant knocks and comparisons with Drennen. Get over it there is nooooooo comparison. I must have missed her on the US U22 team. Just had to get this off my chest.....

What are you talking about???? Obviously Hosier is good otherwise she wouldn't be on the U22 team. I watched her play last week and I thought she gave up too many rebounds. I simply asked if that was the case tonight. And for you to say there is no comparison is crazy. They are both good goalies. Actually, they are both good goalies. Relax mom!!!

Good start to the season for the Mercyhurst girls. It is good to see them scoring goals this early since it has been an issue in past years. 5 PP goals today!!! Keep rolling!!!

Hey MICZamboni: First goal was off a rebound (scramble in front). The second goal found MH standing around on a faceoff and a BB forward wristed it in on the short side. Goalie off line on quick shot.

Thanks Black Bear. I had heard the same thing from another person who was a the game. I think if we (Mercyhurst) can control rebounds this year we should be very good. This is one of the few areas that I am concerned with at this point.

Also, congrats to Valerie Chouinard for being the USCHO offensive player of the week.

Now that Mercyhurst has the weekend off I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the teams MC passed in the rankings overtake Mercyhurst next week. It doesn't matter, I am so looking forward to the series against Dartmouth. I hope the girls aren't looking past any of the opponants before them though.

Well, lets see if the Laker train can keep rolling this weekend against Clarkson. I am hoping for another performance from the Lakers like they had against Maine. I am confident that the Lakers will win both games easily. I can't make either game this weekend so I am hoping LakerFan can give us a recap or two. Just be careful what you say about the goaltenders LakerFan!!!

Game MC vs Clarkson appears to be a wild one. Less than 5 minutes into first period and 4 goals scored--3 by Mercyhurst and 1 by Clarkson.

Is Hurley in net for Clarkson? Coach Seeley won't take long to make a goalie change as he has a very solid #2 in Stephanie Hanson.
