Those interested in new recruits for Mercyhurst. The news release is posted on their site. Two from Sweden, one from Finland and the young lady from Michigan. Look very strong.

I wonder who the quality transfer would be? Hmmmm, deja vu all over again maybe?

I read the link- it's a very well written and informative article about the Laker's new additions for '07.
I didn't interpret Coach Sisti's remarks as indicative that they had a transfer already to go; I interpreted his remarks to be more a general comment that they would consider adding a walk on or transfer if they felt the right player was out there to strengthen their program.

I interpreted the article to read the same way as Sk8happy regarding a potential transfer.

If you haven't read it on the other threads, here is the big news out of Mercyhurst College. This is big time and hopefully will solidify Mercyhurst's spot in the top 8 for at least the next 4 years. Hopefully this will open the doors for other National level players.
I think Agosta can probably skate with our Club team and make an impact. :)

MicZ - the way the Erie newspaper reports it, she may be able to start for the men's squad.
Lakers Sign Best Player in Canada (http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060628/NEWS02/60628006) - perhaps the world!

Well, she was the MVP for her high school team so who knows.
I want to give Maria Lewis a special thank-you for her part in putting Mercyhurst on the hockey map. Agosta's signing is all Lewis' doing and she will be sorely missed. I hope Lewis doesn't get snagged by any other program because I am still hoping Lewis comes back.

Sisti - "As Meghan outlined her goals academically, socially, and athletically I know Mercyhurst was a perfect match."
What an complete wanker. Mercyworst is going from a team of stupid goons to a team of incredibly stupid goalscorers. The only reason Agosta isn't going to Wisco is that they had a tiny bit of integrity. Agosta had a *720* on her SATs, and could only scrape in to even Mercyworst because of a comically inflated GPA. Sisti's sure got a program to admire!

Sounds like someone is a little ******ed that their school didn't get Meghan.

And who cares? She's in, nothing else matters now. Good luck Meghan.

Not referencing this specific instance in any way, but in all fairness I do believe people who do care about such things exist. It's a positive aspect in my view when those involved...coaches, school administration etc. are concerned with and hold the student athlete accountable for the academic abilities & responsibilities. The vast majority of collegiate women's hockey players do that quite successfully I think. I'm just a little bothered by a broad stroke implication that nobody cares.
The many athletes who work their rears off to maintain a high GPA, and their coaches would be examples of people who obviously care.

No disrespect to Coach Lewis, and I've heard nothing but positive things about her, but I think Paul Colontino will fill her void just fine. He is a Mercyhurst Alumn as you probably already know, and from what I have heard will be a great addition. This is not to be meant that Lewis won't missed, I'm sure she will be! The Lakers are looking pretty good for the years to come!

Brookyone........I personally don't think it's fair to Meghan Agosta for someone to come on such a wide open forum and blast her "supposed" SAT scores and GPA in such a manner. Just because someone prints something, doesn't mean it's accurate. It is NO ONES business except for Agosta and Mercyhursts. So, like I said, who cares.........? I certainly don't and good luck to her. Some athletes "have it" academically and thats fantastic. Some athletes struggle academically but try hard. Maybe thats the category Agosta falls into. Since she hasn't even taken her first course at Mercyhurst yet, why would anyone start a rumor that could tarnish her academic reputation by making it sound like she doesn't try. I hope she does well academically and athletically and I wish people would not talk about such a fine player in such a sour manner.

Brookyone should probably answer this but here's my interpretation of Brookyone's message: I think Brookyone was making a general statement (with which I agree) and made his/her position quite clear with the prefacing phrase: "Not referencing this specific instance in any way..."
Certainly, I also agree, good luck to Meghan Agosta at Mercyhurst.

Without jumping off on the "admissions" bandwagon, I think anyone familiar with the college game, men's and women's, would agree different schools have different standards when it comes to who they'll admit.
With Agosta though, the word on the street wasn't so much an admissions issue, rather two critical factors that ultimately settled where she would go:
1. Geography- her dad wasn't about to let her travel out of his reach as watching her play was his first and most important priority. That effectively removed the east coast and WCHA schools from her process. That left two options- Mercyhurst and OSU.
2. Eligibility- she may be eligible by clearninghouse criteria, but the larger issues I heard discussed in Lake Placid were compliance issues. Amateur status is easily compromised when kids accept money for endorsments etc.
Post Olympic gold, Agosta may have some serious issues in that regard. How those will work out is anyone's guess. Some schools I believe got cold feet when they realized there were more than a few potential conflicts surrounding her amateur status.
Time will tell.

Let me blindly "accept" the rumor (which I don't) for a moment that Meghan struggles academically. If that is the case, then a student body of less than 2,500 students and more personal attention by faculty and staff is probably a better place for her to be rather than a campus of 25,000 students. This will better allow her to succeed athletically and academically - and done so legitimately, I might add, not ignoring any academic problems that might develop.

I have no doubt Paul will do a fine job. His job just got a lot easier though.
I was just giving Coach Lewis her just due and I know the girls, coaches and rink staff will miss her. She will be back behind the bench before most people think.

Unruh is not returning. Last I heard is she is going back to Canada. I heard that about 3 weeks ago so things may have changed in that she may have transferred but she will not be back at Mercyhurst.

Mercyhurst is stepping up the attention to hockey. I think this is going to be very helpful to them-a director of hockey operations with attention to fundraising and marketing.
