Mercyhurst 3 Wayne St. 1 after two periods of play. Goals by Fraser, Bourbeau, and Chouinard have put the Lakers in control. Wayne State finished the period with energy after Jim Fetter called what could be an important time out, after his team gave up 3 quick goals. Shots on goal favored Wayne St. 13-10 in the period. Should be an interesting 3rd period.

Mercyhurst finished business with a fairly convincing victory, 4-2. These league games with Wayne St. will be close because of coaching ties. I am sure the girls from Detroit want to get that first victory for Coach Fetter against his former team. I bet the playoffs will be close. Anyway, DiPietro scored for WSU at the 9:40 mark to make it a one goal game just to have Pendleton score for MC just :22 later. Shots on goal in the period favored MC 17-8 and overall 39-30. Good job Lakers.

The most interesting thing about Saturday's game was that there was exactly one power play in the entire game, and it don't come until there was less than two minutes to go in the third period. The first penalty wasn't called until 13:11 in the third, when two minors were called. Mercyhurst plays Wayne State and there are no penalties for 50+ minutes? It was very strange, and things were getting pretty wild at the end as the players started to see what they could get away with.

A lot of penalties aren't getting called in games this year...don't get it....a lot of penalties were let go in the Superior-Stevens pooint game today too.

I'm not really sure you can compare D-I and D-III hockey when it comes to calling penalties,.....the skill level and speed are different, and it seems that referees are more tolerant at the D-I level,.....I would have to think the game between Mercyhurst and WSU was one of marginal penalties that just weren't called,.....heck, you go to some D-III hockey games and a Steven Segal Chinese stick fight breaks out,.....

I like this weekends series with Niagara. As in most conferences, the leader of the conference always wears a huge bullseye on their back and I am sure this is no different. On paper this is a blowout, on the ice it could be different. I hope the Lakers show up this weekend (unlike last weekend) and dont give the Purple Eagles a sniff of a victory. They will have to score early and often on each day. I wonder what the goalie situtation will be like this weekend? What do you think Lakersfan?

I think that Sisti will continue to play goalie roulette until someone strings a few good games together, at which point they will secure the starting job. I think these games against Niagara will be a good mental test for the Laker goalies, since they will probably see little in terms of action and be required to make that one big save after not seeing a shot for 5 minutes.

Of all the teams I have watched this year (MSU,UM,ST. L,Niagara,Yale,WSU), Niagara is the least talented. They have some good players, but they lack depth. Rutledge, their goalie, can keep them in a game but three solid lines of Laker forwards will be the difference for Merychurst.

With the way less talented teams are finding ways to beat more talented teams this year, the Lakers have to be extra ready for series like this one with Niagara,.....if Niagara happens to get stellar goaltending, this will be a nail-biting series for the Lakers,.....however, the resolve of Mercyhurst will win out and they will return to Erie with 4 points,.....don't know who will be in net for this series but I'd be surprised if Lakersfan would know anymore than you MIC,.....

Niagara has to have the highest variance of performance in the history of the sport. Starting 1-4-1 against BC, Mercyhurst, Vermont and UNH made perfect sense. But these results since, are you kidding me? There's just no rhyme or reason to them whatsoever. Who knows which team will show up against Mercyhurst.

dave, you are correct. To lose at UConn 8-0, and then tie OSU twice on the road is nuts. I think the biggest problem they have is generating offense. On average for the entire season they have been outshot 2 to 1. If I recall correctly, they generated most of their scoring chances on the rush and had difficulty establishing a presence in the offensive zone. I chalk this up to the lost of Ashley Riggs (their best player) and and head coach Margot Page to the Olympics (note, Riggs is no longer with the Canadian National team). Hard to recruit when the head coach says "but I won't be there next year."

Those are funny results. The OSU ties aren't that surprising, because the Buckeyes have always been a team that have put up some inconsistant nonconference results. But that 8-0 loss to UConn? Connecticut didn't strike me as a team likely to put up 8 goals against anyone. You can say "just a bad day", but then there is the 9-1 Yale loss. So the obvious conclusion is that the Purple Eagles must be a weak team, and then they sweep Clarkson. Maybe they eat their spinach on some days, and other days they don't?

Maybe Niagara is a team that falls behind, stops playing defense to up its offense to come back, and just digs itself a deeper and deeper hole?

This has been Mercyhurst's MO the last 3 or 4 years. Totally outplay a team and have to play for their lives. Mercyhurst outshoots Niagara 59-10 and only wins 2-1 by scoring 2 goals in the 3rd. Are we really running into hot goaltenders week after week or does the problem lie within the Lakers inability to score?
Niagara only posted 3 shots on goal the first two periods but are losing 1-0. My opinion on the goalie situation, I think Drennen should be the goalie for the rest of the season.

MIC, relax, the Lakers are fine and here's why; every nail-biter the play in better prepares them for not only their own championships but the NCAAs,.....yes they may be pressing a little, but Niagara has figured out their own MO; hanging around for 2 periods, and find a way to win in the latter parts of games,.....look for the Lakers to break today's game wide open early, and watch the Purple Eagles pack it in quicker than Jonny "Steeler"'s swing on the first tee,.....and MIC, I would think there's a bigger, unrelated concern for you; the NEUMANN Knights just took it on the chin, harder that Joe Frazier yesterday,.....down goes Frazier!!!, and the Knights,.....and finally on a posititve note, you were, once again, on the $$$ with Minnesota, even though they only won the 2nd game of the series with UMD,.....when are people going to start listening,.....

Sunday's game was similiar to saturday's game. I just hope the Lakers show up to play this friday and saturday.
By the way, the last time I saw Jon Finke play golf his partner ( a female) received a full golf scholarship offer the next day. Finke is like Theresa Marchese, he has a way of making everyone else around him look better.

Finally, don't worry about Nuemann. They will bounce back better than Tiger Woods approach with a 7 iron. Coach Bateman has that team on regiment more strict than a Star Jones diet.

MIC,

.....either you are right about your problem or the higher Source is right about the solution,.....there is no compromise, gray area, or bargaining about the untraversable gap between these 2 ways of seeing and being in life,.....the principle applys to all situations; only those who are willing to make fools of themselves can make heroes of themselves,.....but there is also a designed foolishness in which we neglect an inner voice guiding us to action that may look smart to the world, but actually proceeds from deep wisdom which leads us to greater anxiety,.....commitment usually means change, and change is one thing the ego doesn't like,.....

MIC,

.....the question continues to be, are you prepared to give health and happiness priority over your bank balance and toy collection???,.....the rhythm of life should be the priority in your life,.....remember, a man without a paddle is useless in a paddleboat,....."schnawps",.....
