I'm curious. Does anyone know how many games to date do; Assebet, Cal Selects, SSM, Polar Bears and the Wild have? It would be an interesting comparision.

good point! we were talking about the 16 and 19 only. Thanks for the help about the 16 Shattuck SM - does anybody know anything else about them?? Were they at the PB tourney or any other Xmas tourneys out here?? How do they match up with Team Illinois U16??

On Division II Notes:
St. Paul's Tournament (12/17-12/18)
The Final was Groton (3) vs Proctor (1). It was a hard fought game closer than the score reflects! Great Goaltending from Groton's goalie Ashleigh Corvi who stopped the Proctor attacks! Overall, Proctor showed its strength in the tournament ( Win over Southfield HS (6-2); Win over St. Pauls (6-2)). Proctor's Goalie Melanie Spears played strong in front of the pipes. Proctor's Forward #11 Sara Paulshock, scored 5 goals against St. Pauls and Forward #8 Carla Little had a hat trick against Southfield HS. Proctor's penalty unit was outstanding in the past four games, as it has allowed only 2 PP Goals in 38 penalty kill situations. Also Freshman #15 Nikki Fernandez was selected as one of the top five defensemen in the St. Paul's tournament.
Proctor is looking to turn some heads this season as it goes into the winter break, 8-1-0!
Best Holiday Wishes to everyone in this forum!

Geez, I see no mention of Brewster who is off to a 12-2-1 start. Their two losses came the first weekend of their season off a total of one practice. They went 4-0-0 in Deerfield as the only D2 team amongst the D1 teams there, beating Choate 3-2. Most of their girls could barely make the height requirement to get on an A ride at Disneyland but they can sure play. I can't imagine that anyone is going to take them lightly and I would advise their future opponents to come ready to play as they are a creative, relentless, confident team with some solid goaltending this year.

Do the powerhouses of Team Illinois, Wisconsin Wild, Syracuse Stars, Polar Bears, Assabet - do they all practice 5 days a week together to prepare for the Nationals?? Most of the girls do play high school with different teams and different players; different clubs have different "systems" I don't think its the same team bonding experience as Shattuck St. Mary's.
QUOTE]
To my knowledge the Polar Bears practice only once a week if they are lucky. Mostly with only half a team. Some weeks they do not practice. I often wonder what they would look like if they practice and played 5 days a week?
PB and other club teams with top line prep players are very good because they have a lot of TALENTED players, even if they only practice one day a week. Of course if these highly talented players practiced together five days a week and worked on their team systems they would be dominant. No question.

I was told by a mom of a prep player over Christmas that the schools are starting to limit how much time a girl can participate away from school with a club. In other words, the school activity is the priority when a conflict exists between the club and school. Can anyone confirm or elaborate on this?

Some Preps have "closed" weekends where students need to participate in / support a school sponsored activity (parents weekend / school play ect) in addition it is not uncommon for a closed weekend to occur before exams.
The 19U's have it even tougher making the minimum number of games to qualify for the nationals as the fall weekends are often taken up with college visits for many seniors. My bias is that adding more required games is not helpful. These girls often play a fall sport & club hockey. Sometimes they need a day or two of rest.

No question, this is true.
Maybe a particularly tough week is coming up with important games, or the team is run down physically and the prep coach will say to the team "no outside hockey this weekend". And the clubs just have to deal with it. If that club team happens to have a few players from one school, oh, well. I'm not sure how much the club coaches think about this, but many times the girl is attending on at least partial scholarship money at a prep.
Obviously, it depends on the particular situation of the strength of your school team vs. strength of your club team and it can vary widely from player to player, but for most teens, the idea of representing your school has much more appeal than even a national championship that gets little-to-no recognition at school. I don't know of a girl who plays on a competitive school team who would choose her club team over her school team.
I have noticed that some parents can take a while to come around to this way of thinking, but the player gets it (from peer influence?) right away on where her priorities are.

Agree! IMO it will always be the case that students would rather represent their schools than the club if only for school spirit. If we can think back to when we were in school and how important our relationships and friends were to us.
However, IMO when you look at it from a visability standpoint the clubs potentially get more bang with the colleges. Now I am referring to those outside of Mass and Minn. But for all others I have come around to believe that a girl would do well to play for a top tier club team if she has design's for college.

Especially true if one of the girls is a captain.......at the preps you live with your treammates 24x7 and the girls I've known think twice before they abdicate their school commitments and responsibilities for a 'personal' deal. Not everyone feels that way but I've seen the school take precedence.

Re: club vs. school teams and visibility with college coaches- Girls' hockey is still a fairly small universe, and it is not as difficult as many think for a college coach to find out about players, at least those in established situations(a specific example would be Division One New England prep school teams). Coolsport referred to Mass. and Minn.,but Connecticut prep schools such as Hotchkiss, Taft, Choate, Loomis and Pomfret have been turning out solid D1 and D3 players for many years. By the way, when discussing club vs.school teams, don't forget that the top Polar Bear team is basically an all-star team drawing the top 2 or 3 players from the above-mentioned schools(throw in Deerfield and Berkshire from Mass.).

Great game at Proctor this afternoon. Proctor hosted GDA(Governor Drummer Academy). Game results was Proctor(4) and GDA(4), OT period no score. PA Goalie #30 Melanie Spears stopped 53 or 57 shots on net.
#11 (F)Sara Paulshock (2007) had two goals
# 9 (F)Erin Davey (Captain) (2006) had one goal
#15 (D)Nikki Fernandez (2009) had one goal and three assists.
Note: Proctor could not hold on to a 4-2 lead on the third period as they lost some of their steam against a good GDA team. Proctor was working with a short bench (Two players sick, and one ineligible due to MAJOR penalty on last game). Respectable tie against a good team in the Division. Big game ahead against Brewster Academy next Wednesday! Proctor is 9-1-1 going into a tough stretch in the schedule! Better able to get a measure of the team in the next two weeks! Great Job Girls!

You are right about the Brewster game being a big one. Brewster is coming off another 2 win weekend, 8-0 over New Hampton and 4-2 over Exeter, and has now won their last 9 in a row. Against Exeter, if not for an outstanding game by Exeter's goalie it would certainly have been a rout. Not sure what the shot totals were but Brewster had a huge advantage. Now that break is over and they will start practicing together again.............they will be a tough team to beat.

Brewster is a solid team! I hope that Proctor is able to get back the sick players in order to get a good measure of the team against one of the top teams in the Division. From seeing the team, I can only say that PA should give Brewster a good game but it will be their greatest challenge up to this time on their schedule. Looking forward to a respectable showing by PA!

I'm looking forward to watching Brewster play Proctor.......managed to arrange a vacation day. I certainly haven't seen all the top teams play this year, but based on Brewster's performance at Deerfield, I don't think anyone is going to find them an easy win. They have great team speed, are relentless forecheckers, move the puck well, strong at the blue line...........just a real quality team. As a diehard Hockey Dad, here's hoping for a GREAT game. (with Brewster coming out on top)

Oh yeah. And their goalie has somewhere around a 1.26 GA average. Not bad.

Same thoughts here except for a different result! (LOL! Even though realizing we are big time underdogs!) I too hope to make the game! Have a good week, Black Bear!

Hope you have a great week too Jferg325. And, good luck to your daughter and all the Proctor team throughout the season. I have to say, I also have a son playing Junior hockey and while I'd never dare to say it to him..........I'd rather watch the prep girls play. LOL.

Black Bear,
From what I heard from other parents at the game, Brewster has one solid lineup and good goaltending, like you stated before! Nice win 8-2! You guys have my vote for taking the Div II title this year! The only bright point was that PA did not get shutout! Best of luck in the rest of the season!
