I just got back from the evening games at the Coliseum. Northland Pines beat Memorial 2-1, Superior beat University School 5-2 (I think that was the final).
Just a couple tidbits:
Eaves and Sauer were watching part of the first game together. Mike didn't stick around long, Sauer stayed for both games.
Northland Pines really didn't impress me too much, one man team if there ever was one. B.J. Gottsacker had both goals, kid really works his tail off, works good along the boards. Has OK size, 6' 200. Their leading goal scorer on the season, Derek Tijan, really didn't look good at all, lots of turnovers.
Memorial's big guns (Johnsons, Parks, Sauer) had tons of chances, and could only get a goal by Parks. Many, many times Sauer had point blank shots, and put it right in the goalies gut or shot wide. Gottsacker is better than any of them, IMO.
University School wasn't very good, not as good as in recent years. Jeff Christiansen, the Mr. Hockey finalist (I think?), is OK, had their first goal, has a decent shot, but really got beat to the puck by the smaller and quicker Superior boys.
Superior was 10x as good as any of the other 3. They could have easily blown out University School. Very fast team, pass real well. One guy doesn't hold the puck for long. For a real small team (avg. about 5'10", 160), they hit a LOT. They hit the University School guys every time they had the puck (and sometimes when they didn't), and had them half scared by the end of the game. I'll bet the time of possession was 5 to 1 in favor of Superior in the 3rd. No 1 player really stuck out for them, which definitely shows how deep they are, but Jameson Lundquist, their leading scorer on the year, is very good. He's real small (5'7" 145), but lightning quick, and not afraid of physical play. Great playmaker.
As far as anybody being a possible walkon at UW, I doubt it. Obviously there isn't much room for forwards, and no D-men really stuck out to me. Superior should easily defend last year's title.

i dont know if you are going to the badger game or going back to watch state, but andy bombach, wolosek and olynik all have good potential and I think they should put on a good show tomorrow. i agree about the other game. I don't see any of them doing anything spectacular. Christianson could become a good player but who knows.

Aktick - thanks for the recap on the state tourney. Superior may not win it all every year but from the times I've watched the tourney they're ALWAYS the fastest team there top to bottom and seem to make the right tic-tac-toe passes effortlessly. I think their competition (duluth area schools) are still much stiffer than what they face when they get to state.
I'm disappointed that Northland Pines (Eagle River d***it!) is a one-man show. I haven't seen them this year but was hoping they'd show well as a team.
For MN: Here's to Centennial defeating Hill-Murray tomorrow! 1 (Gorowsky) we want more (Anderson)!

I concur. Attending HS in the Cities, I loved this time of year.

His opinion is that Anderson is the best player on Centennial. He also likes Ryan Flynn (soph) a lot. But since he is a Gopher alum, you would probably discount those opinions. :p ;)
I know Anderson has taken some unofficial visits to local schools already. Not sure if Bucky is in the hunt at all.
Roseville wasn't much of a challenge for Centennial as they graduated a lot of players from their runner up team from a year ago.
Centennial already beat Hill-Murray earlier this year. It should be a pretty darn good game though. Guentzel's kid (a junior) is on Hill-Murray.
Lucia's son (a soph) plays at Mariucci tonight (for Wayzata) for the chance to go to state. I wonder if his dad will be around? Could be a tough choice cause dad could be watching Blake Wheeler play tonight in the rubber match between Blake HS and Breck HS. That is where I will be. :D
My dad wants to see two games though so he is headed to Mariucci instead. I think I'll see the better game. Quality over quantity I say. ;)
Outside of Gopher games, state sectionals are by far my favorite hockey games of year to attend. Nothing like watching young kids playing their guts out to make it to the greatest state tournament there is. :)
Hammy-
Thanks for the info.
From all I've heard and read it doesn't exactly sound like it's a slap in the face to Gorowsky to say that Anderson is a better player. ****, 80 points as a junior dman is tough to beat. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up.
When do these games start becoming televised, do you know? I'd like to get a copy of one of their games, preferably from the upcoming finals!:-))

I wouldn't go as far as saying it is the greatest state tournament there is.

It certainly is for hockey. You can debate whether it is the best for all sports but since this is a hockey board, you probably would not get a lot of support. ;)

And obviously the chances of Gorowsky ever playing in the USHL this season were somewhere between 0 and none also! If he wanted to play in the USHL, HE'D BE THERE RIGHT NOW! Why go to the USHL this year when you can:
enjoy your senior year at your own HS
play for the #1 team in MN
have a great chance to win a state title
choose between going to school and playing hockey at Yale, North Dakota and Wisconsin w/o the enhanced exposure of the USHL
pick which USHL team you want to play for next season...Sioux City was mentioned as his early favorite.

At the select 17 tournament this past summer, Gorowsky had 2 points. 9 players on the Minnesota team had more, and a couple of others had the same. Hardly the stuff of legends.

Yeah, because as we all know, one tournament means EVERYTHING! If he didn't score 5 goals every game in every tournament he was ever in, he can't be any good.

in mites 147 players scored more than Gorowsky.
We all know how your 'points' and 'age' arguments have worked in the past try: wookie out east and hunwick vs Suter and Likens.. hmm, better than Suter? Nope. Not as good as Likens either but keep trying dope!
This record is scracthed HH. Try another tune:rolleyes:

For the benefit of Mr. Kite (HH - get back to earth if you don't get it)
I forgot, all of the maize & blue recruits from now on will be 16year olds who accelerate and enter college at 17, and all of them will be the #1 point scorers in their respective leagues.
Hell, Michigan may as well join the NHL, that's how good they are.
Why doesn't HH start a Michigan recruiting thread?

Moreover, if HH knows talent so **** well, why doesnt he recruit for Michigan. Oh wait, Michigan wouldnt trust him with a plastic spoon let alone the future of a program.
I really would think guys like HH would be deterred from continuing to criticize these kids after the way Eaves has proven himself. Are we claiming every kid coming in is the next Wayne Gretzky? No, of course not, but the kids he is getting are obviously quality players that should be solid college kids. Also, so maybe Gorowsky or whoever else HH thinks isnt very good that has committed to us isnt the best player out there and there are better grabs to have. You cant have a team with all super stars because that is too many egos and too much chance that you will lose them after a year or two. Eaves is getting the kids that fit into the puzzle he is making, and he has a reason why he chooses each one of the recruits.

Congrats to Gorowsky and Centennial on advancing to the State tourney for the first time. It sounded like a great game as Centennial beat Hill-Murray 3-2.

Centennial's next game is on Thursday at noon against Holy Angels which should be a helluva matchup. It sounds like HA may have some goalie issues this season, though, w/o Frazee. Hammy, any scouting report for us on HA?

Sioux Falls lost its 19th straight game! Matt Ford has been on fire since committing to the UW, though. 2 more goals for "Chevy" last night. He also had 9 shots on goal!
JoePa had a goal and 8 shots on goal.
I heard earlier in the week that there was supposed to be a Thurs/Fri recruit in town. In scanning the USHL box scores from last night, I couldn't help but notice that Kyle Kuk's name was not listed in the lineup for Tri-City last night. Hmmm...I thought I heard elsewhere that Drewiske and Ford each got a half scholarship (not sure if that's accurate or not) which would leave another .5 to land another solid defenseman in Kuk. We'll see...

SIOUX FALLS WINS! SIOUX FALLS WINS!!!!!
The Stampede snapped their 19-game losing streak last night with a 3-1 win over Sioux City. Badger recruit Matt Ford stayed hot with another 2 goals and 1 assist. Ford and Klubertanz play today as Matt looks to wrap up the league POW honors.
Pavelski had another goal, too, and finally seems to be coming out of his offensive funk. He's had 15 SOG in his last two games. Ford's had 13 in his last two.
A buddy of mine who follows Tri-City mentioned that Kyle Kuk sustained some sort of minor injury last week which was probably why he wasn't in the lineup this weekend. So, that may be a false alarm, I haven't heard anything yet.
I'll hopefully get to PtC results later in the day!:-))
Wisconsin Hockey: One..we want more!:-))

Maybe Hobart should spend more time worrying about why Michigan kids like Gerbe and Motherwell are heading to BC over Michigan...and not so much about Wisconsin recruits!:-))
Matt Ford picked up his 30th goal in a game with GB that's currently in progress!
