Hey Badger fans!
I though I would pass this tidbit along to you guys.
I was listening to the UMD game on the radio on Friday night and they had an NHL scout from Lakeville, MN on for an interview during the intermission. This guy said that the best hockey player in the state of Minnesota was Blake Wheeler. He also said the best senior hockey player was Tom Gorowsky and felt he should win the Mr. Hockey award.
Despite what some of the maroon and gold trolls might come on here and say, the guy did not, I repeat, the guy did not say the best NHL prospect....he said the best hockey player.
I have not seen Gorowsky play, but I think you guys got a good one.
P.S. Thanks for giving UMD Mitch Kerns!
Any word on Pearce?
Did Eaves have another left-handed defenseman in today?

Thanks for the info!
I don't know how much you follow Kerns but his season recently came to a disappointing end as they lost to Madison Memorial (Mark Johnson's two sons amongst others). As a result, I'm sure he'll probably be at the KC cheerin' on the Dogs this weekend.

I haven't heard anything about Pearce yet. Everything I've heard suggests that Pearce and Shane Connelly (Chicago Steel) are the two best remaining US goaltenders for '05. The reason Pearce would probably be more appealing to the Badgers is that he could apparently finish up school and be enrolled at the UW as early as next year if Bruckler heads to Philly. He's gotta be the one!
I believe Joe Piskula was scheduled to be in yesterday and today.
The new recruits have been added and stats updated:
http://www.geocities.com/bulldogric.geo/recruits.html
Recruiting hasn't appeared to skip a beat since John Hynes left for the NTDP. I wonder if the recent run of good commits will be enough to keep Mark LeRose on the staff beyond this season. He must be doing something right..do they really want to have 3 different on the road recruiters in 3 consecutive years? It'll be interesting to see what happens with this situation.
While I applaud the use of using old connections (NTDP, state kids, Shattuck kids, etc) in recruiting, I hope the staff doesn't comletely ignore America Jr. when looking for talent. So far there are no Canucks in the '04 and '05 classes. We can't let that pipeline dry up.
Wisconsin Hockey: Don't forget about America Jr.!
With Wisconsin High School Hockey tournament starting, are there any players on the teams that are left that could be targets down the road. At Memorial there are Johnsons and a Sauer (I presume Coach Sauer's son??). What happens with someone like Sauer, does he get the nod out of respect? Did one of Coach Howard's sons get a scholarship or was he a walkon?

I was looking at the rosters from the WIAA site http://www.wiaawi.org/hockeyboys/rosters.pdf and saw Hudson has a Jake Drewiske, a junior. Davis's brother? He's the 2nd leading scorer.

yeah, jake is davis' brother. He is a pretty good player but the real prize on the team is Andy Bombach. He's a forward who has good size, good speed and great hands. He always seems to find the open ice and is known for scoring shorthanders. He is leaving next year to go play juniors. I think Waterloo.

I think they're expecting a Thurs/Fri recruit on campus this week. Not sure who but I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the kids involved in the state tourney. I've heard nothing but great things about Brendan Olinyk (Wisconsin Rapids) who's supposed to be the best dman in the state. I guess he's got unbelievable speed and has put up some big points. Jeff Christiansen (USchool) was ranked 197th by CSB..one spot ahead of Chris Bourque, FWIW. I was told that BJ Gottsacker (Northland Pines) also has D1 talent as does Bombach. There will probably be at least a handful of prospects at state this year.
Joel Sauer is not related to Jeff. He did lead Memorial in goals, though, as a sophomore with 26.
Best of luck to Tom Gorowsky and Centennial tonight. They face Roseville at 6:00 tonight. The winner plays Hill-Murray on Friday.
Wisconsin Hockey: Sauer Pauer!
Thanks guys for the info. Wisconsin High School hockey looks like it is on an upswing as far as D1 prospects. Sounds like more D1 hockey prospects than D1 football prospects!

Haha, are you serious? Johnsons and Joel Sauer targets down the road. That's funny. Really, that's funny.

Why is it funny? Maybe they are not D-1 prospects at this point, but I'm sure they will get a look based on the "bloodline" if you will.
Mike, are they not looking at you? Is this why its "funny"?
I don't think anyone here is suggesting that the Badger coaching staff is at their house every other weekend for visits, or offering up scholarships. Its just food for thought.
BTW, I have never heard that these kids are D-1 prospects. Decent HS hockey players, sure, but not D-1 prospects.

Having watched Centennial play numerous times (and I'll watch them play again tonight) I can flat out say that Gorowsky is a good player. But, he's not even the best player on his own team. RJ Anderson (JR. - Defense) is the best player on that team.
Goroswky will have a successful college career, but I don't see him as a blue-chip prospect.

Well, with all due respect, Minnesota, Yale, UND, and Wisconsin all had the kid in. He must have some ability, and if Minnesota, UND, and Wisconsin all competed for the kid's services, well...that speaks for itself.
However, from what I have been told, Gorowsky has excellent scoring ability, good skating ability, and works hard every shift. I like those kind of kids who maybe aren't what some people call "blue chippahs", but get the job done (e.g. Ross Carlson, or Andrew Joudrey).
He's a nice catch. Face it, he's at least one of the state's top ten players...wouldn't you agree?
Wisconsin Hockey: Perspective.

I find it funny that when people hear the name Sauer somewhere in hockey they think it has something to do with Jeff Sauer. Joel Sauer is in no relation to Jeff Sauer. I do agree with you that they are decent, decent high school players, but nothing more. They may have got a glance, but I would be suprised if that got much more.

This is from the AJHL message board with a Wisconsin fan asking about Bertram and them Webguys response:
"Hey, lurker here from Wisconsin. At one time coach Mike Eaves was after Bertram, haven't heard anything lately as to his plans for the next couple years. Has he decided anything yet or is he waiting till after the season? What else can you tell me about him? Thanks a lot!

Dan's only concern right now are the upcoming playoffs.
As I understand it, he will make the decision and announce what route he is taking once the playoffs are over.
To speculate that he has already made that decision, or on what that decision might be, would be premature at this time.... and only outright guessing.
Dan is a very nice young man and a great team player. While other highly touted prospects might appear to be primarily focused on individual goals, Bertram is a true team player. Ask him how many points he has.... and he won't know.
One often forgets he is only 16(at least by year born) given his maturity both on and off the ice. He will be an asset to whichever route he chooses, and to that team and its community.
