what's the scoop with Pavelski? I really thought he'd be among the top players this year in the USHL since he had a pretty good year last year but he seems to be struggling and not producing.

Good question...I wish I knew the answer!

You can only blame so much on playing for a horrible team..which Klubertanz and Pavelski do. If you're a great player, you should score regardless.

Hopefully it's nothing serious and will end up being similar to Reino's career here at the UW. Modest numbers when surrounded by poor/average players and vastly improved when he had a better supporting cast.

It's not like his linemates are 1, 2, 3 in scoring like a certain Gopher recruit!:-))

I hope that the Gopher Recruits can have careers like Reino too. I think any program would be pretty happy if things panned out that way.

Not a knock on your statement, but I just wanted to point out that that bar is really high.

Yeah but who is "making" who on that line? I'd say the one scoring the most goals in the league is the one keeping his linemates point totals higher. :p ;)

It really wasn't a comparison to Reino as much as it was to say that Pavelski's a good player who will be surrounded by much better players next year at the UW. Reino was the classic case of a great player who only reached his potential when the Badgers finally surrounded him with some better players and they started winning. I'm HOPING the same is true for Pavelski.

Wisconsin Hockey: I'd "settle" for another Reino, though...

Did Carlson play on Pavelski's line last year? Maybe he's missing that gritty player that gets to all the loose pucks and maybe can find some magic again next year together. Who the hell thought that Carlson would be the Badger leading the team in Points/Game this season.

No, they played on different lines.

Carlson has been a MAJOR surprise and according to Eaves in todays press conference, while Ross has been a great addition on the ice, he's been an even greater addition in the lockerroom.

Wisconsin Hockey: JoePa and Rosco!

Averaging a point a game. Imaging where UW would be now if he had played the whole season? I like that line a lot.

Are you still out there???

The hockeyscouting website has an interview with Dan Bertram. In it, he states that he has accelerated his schooling and is now currently in 12th grade..and will graduate from HS THIS year. I think this would qualify as news around here as most of us assumed he was an '05 recruit. If he is indeed set to graduate this year, he could be playing college hockey NEXT season if he chooses to go that route. Is this correct?

I guess he's resumed skating and could be back by the 2nd or 3rd week in February. Plans to announce where he's headed (MJ or college) by the end of March or whenever the Kods' season is over.

I have no idea if the Badgers are in the mix but it might not be a bad time to be stuck with 1.5 scholarships afterall if this is true!!!!

Wisconsin Hockey: Bertram..an '04???

mf! hope this isn't true, again, no idea if he's considering Michigan but '04 is 0 filled for UM. Was hoping for a Cogliano-Johson-Bertram-Bradford dream team. :D

Sounds like Mitch Kearns will be a Minnesota-Duluth recruit for the 2005-06 season. Mentions Wisconsin but with so little room for 2005 I can't see them being able to offer any money for 2005.

If he's an O4, then move BC right up to the front of the list, as they have two scholarships up front that they haven't been able to give away, and are desperate for a forward (and they and Minn were supposed to be the two finalists for him).

FWIW:

While Davis Drewiske (WI Mr. Hockey from Hudson, currently at Des Moines) is listed as an '05 Bemidji recruit on the USHL site and Heisbenberg's list, it's my understanding that he was in Madison yesterday and today for a visit. I'm not exactly sure what that means....

Wisconsin Hockey: What's wrong with this picture?!

Again, FWIW, I had heard that Drewiske will be a better college prospect that Engel. Now, Engel's size could make him a better pro prospect, but there certainly is a difference between the two. A half scholarship to each would certainly be value for my liking.

Wisconsin Hockey: VALUED recruiting???

On Bertram:

I'm not really sure what to believe at this point. I got an email from a lurker on the board who seems very close to the situation. He said that Bertram is still "an '05 recruit who is not close to deciding." So I'm guessing that Funky's Dream Team is still a possibility afterall...screw Michigan!:-))

sags-
A HS observer I talked to said Drewiske has the size of Engel with the polish of Lutz (whom you mentioned earlier). That would seem to backup your claim..I know you've been high on DD for quite a while now. We'll see what happens...

Sounds like Josh Calleja's up to 78 points for New Richmond. I've heard mixed reviews on him, though, in terms of Badger potential. His size..or lack thereof..seems to be an issue. It'd be nice to see him at state, though

Wisconsin Hockey: Bertram...'05?:-))

I can tell you this about Berts.

He has fast tracked his schooling and will be graduating this year.

He is currently stateside meeting with family advisers and will return to Camrose next week.

He has started skating again and the knee feels real good I guess.

I understand that he will be making a final decision where he will be playing next year very shortly after this season(playoffs) end, whenever that may be.

As far as my guess on where that is.... I got nothing.
There are still people here who suggest he'll be back with the Kodiaks next year.... but I do not believe so - he's simply just too good and I would question his opportunity to further his development at this level.

Sorry I am not much more helpful than that.

Thanks for the info! It's pretty amazing how quickly he's recovered. How have the Kods played w/o him..aside from wins and losses? Can this team make another run like last year?

In checking out the Madison Caps website, I noticed that the annual Gold Medal Classic starts tomorrow. This is the great event that Bobby Suter holds each year out at Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton. I just dug out last years program which included such names as Sid Crosby, Drew Stafford, Ken Rowe, Jack Johnson, Matt Smaby, Ryan Duncan, Phil Kessel, Nathan Lawrence, Garrett Suter, Tom Zabkowicz, Shane Connelly, Jeff Lerg, Ryan Turek, Brett Motherwell, Evan Rankin, Nathan Gerbe, Jim Fraser, Cody Lampl, Jeff Hazelwood, Zach Bearson, Raymond Eichenlaub, Kevin Roeder and others. If you need to get your hockey fix this weekend w/o the Badgers there's bound to be some great future stars out at Cap Ice this weekend.

Mark Johnson's boys (Chris-sr., Patrick-fr. @ Madison Memorial):

http://www.madison.k12.wi.us/jmm/Activities/Schedules/memhockey/Players.htm

Patrick was the highest scoring frosh in the league last I saw and Joel Sauer was the highest scored soph. Memorial's got some good young talent.

Cap Times~~ "Kerns, who on Wednesday gave a verbal commitment to play at Minnesota-Duluth starting in 2005, is the centerpiece up front with a strong skating ability and good hands."

In some ways you hate seeing Wisconsin kids play elsewhere, but in others, it's good to see that the level of play seems to be improving as more kids get full rides. I don't know that Wisconsin had really any room to offer much, or if there was interest, but hopefully he does well.
