I know this does not belong on this thread but I remember the dialogue with WebGuy while we were recruiting Brodeur. I was searching the Forum for AJHL looking for any Bertram news and saw that there was a thread wishing WebGuy the Happy Big 4-0.
At least I hope it is the same person----ooppsss!

Eric, did you see any recruits at the Michigan Tech games?

I never ventured over there to snoop around, to be honest. Too much going on at the time.

In reading the GB message board, it sounds like things are getting rough for Coach Osiecki. One of his better forwards, Brandon Longley just quit the team because of differences with the staff apparently. He was an assistant captain. He's had a couple tough years and some really bad teams. He seems pretty similar to Eaves in that if you're losing..he's probably not a very fun person to be around! At any rate, I believe they've won 3 in a row..hopefully things turn around for him.

Klubertanz added another assist in their win last night. The most impressive stat for Kluby might be his +/- totals. Last year, he was a -22, this season, he's a +2. He has the 2nd most shots on the team with 96 which is pretty amazing in 30 games. He should be a pretty well-rounded player by the time he gets to Madison.

Motherwell added an assist in a RC win, too. He's got one more point than Klubertanz AND he's played in 6 fewer games AND he's a year younger. Get him!!!!

It's been a while since we got good news in recruiting, in fact the only "recent" news was bad w/ Haghomo decommiting. We are getting pretty close to Spring signing period assuming it is the same week as football. The first week of February is right around the corner. It would be nice to get some combination of 2 of Motherwell, Drewski, and Engel. Let hope Eaves gets some momentum from the WJC. Hopefully we get some good news on a commit or two in the next week or so now that he is back on this side of the pond and has time to work on recruiting. I would love to get one of Bertram, Bradford, or Kessel to verbal as well.

The spring should yield some bounty for the UW on the recruiting front. I think you've got to put getting a L handed D as a top priority, and I think you'll see UW land a quality kid come springtime. I think Motherwell might be the top candidate.

On the recruiting front, the UW '04 kids are really playing well. Klubertanz is having a very nice year, Auffrey's play has been outstanding, and Pavelski (despite his stats being down) are all kids who are going to step right in next season and immediately contribute. I'm looking forward to it. UW's got a very young club, and there simply isn't a lot of scholarship room available.

Also of interest will be a scholarship goaltender. Elliott has shown he'll be a quality netminder for the future, and UW has the luxury of waiting a year for the netminder THEY want, rather than having to absolutely sign a kid like this season.

I have not seen Calleja. It sure sounds like he can snipe, and no doubt, he'll be given a shot to play USHL next year. Coach Swanda has lots of junior A contacts, so the kid will play somewhere. We'll see what he can do at the next level.

Longley is a decent player. And can make the transition from F to D when needed. But he isn't one of GBs top forwards (he's tied for 8th on the team for goals scored) He's a grinder - and he works hard - which is good. But the fact he didn't have a ride yet indicates he isn't the most talented offensive player.

As for Osiecki, yes - some people here are getting frustrated, but widespread that is I can't really say. In 10 years we've only had three losing seasons. The first one, last year and now this year.

Hey GB fan how does Nate Dey and Sean Garrity look. Hopefully they are the next Hartigan and Arnason for the Huskies. Sorry UW fans.

sagissoor, you actually think Davenport is the best player in the Big 8? Hes on a team that gave up 16 goals, ouch. I went to East graduated in 01 and I remember his brothers being decent hockey players. So what makes him stick out?

Future Badgers Kulbertanz and Pavalski were both named to the USHL yesterday. The game is February 3rd hopefully its shown on Fox Sports again to get a look at these 2 guys.

Eric your guy Motherwall also made the team.

Congrats to all 3!

Motherwell had a goal and 2 assists in a loss last night. Currently tied for 2nd in scoring amongst USHL defensemen (18 points in 25 games) despite missing 8 games due to injury. Sounds like a smooth skating, qb-type of defenseman who can run the PP. Only has 29 SOG in 25 games.

The All-Star game was where Pavelski first made a name for himself last season. He put up nice numbers but had a great All-Star game and just went nuts after that. Hopefully he does the same in the 2nd half.

Davenport is the entire Madison East team. He is 6'1", very smooth skating, excellent stick handler, accurate shot, knows the game, works hard every shift, and has great stamina. His brothers were both good but smaller and less creative. Travis is without a doubt the best player in the conference imho.

If all goes the same the rest of the way, Calleja will get my vote for WPH player of the year. A lot CAN change though.

New Richmond apparently has a decent 1-2 punch in Dan Bergman and Calleja. Bergman led the state in scoring last year with 73 points while Calleja finished 2nd with 72. Calleja has 27 goals in 11 games so far. Hopefully they make it to state this year..it'd be a fun team to watch. Their goalie (Paige?) was pretty **** good last year, too, for a young kid.

According to USHR, Wisconsin is showing a great deal of interest in Breck (MN HS) F Blake Wheeler, who is the highest rated HS kid according to CSB (#47).

Some notable rankings of UW kids:

#58 Jake Dowell (2nd)
#81 Robbie Earl (4th)
#147 Matt Auffrey (5th)
#149 Kyle Klubertanz (5th)
#151 Jeff Likens (6th)
#174 Mark Heatley (7th)

I wonder where dear old Hobart is...it should be noted that Matt Hunwick in #179 (7th). I guess my draft position guess of the 5th round was a bit TOO HIGH. :D

Wisconsin Hockey: NHL Factory.

Ratings are ratings, but it is funny to me that the guy Hobart was bragging about all summer is rated lower than a guy that is arguably a fifth liner on our team. And a non-recruited walkon at that.

Wisconsin Hockey: MARK Heatley over Hunwick

Any mention of who else was interested in Wheeler? Seems like I read in the St. Cloud Times in the past several months that he had contacted SCSU coaches to gauge their interest in him.

Were all those schools actually listed in aforementioned USHR report, or is your post just a blanket response designed to demonstrate that he is being recruited heavily by a number of quality schools?

I dodnt know how big Travis was vs. his brothers. Look like he has good size. East would have been a lot better if Lampe would have stuck around.

Here's a pic of Wheeler who sounds like a pretty decent football player, too:

http://www.eteamz.com/breckfootball/roster/index.cfm?season=244520&sport=3&id=3056105

Sounds like a big kid that'll probably be in the Brad Winchester (insert cop-punching joke here) range once he gets to college. The list of potential '05 forwards is growing: Bertram, Bradford, Kilpatrick, Nathan Lawrence, Wheeler....

In 13 games, Wheeler has 22-19-41.

Josh Calleja and New Richmond play Shattuck on 1/22. Calleja currently has 29 goals and 19 assists.

Anyone know why some of the better U-17 players are NOT playing in the NAHL Showcase in Chicago? Skille, Kessel, Frazee, Johnson, Gerbe, etc. have not played in their first two games of the tournament if the Pointstreak stat sheet is accurate. What's the deal? They wouldn't call that many up to play in AA against the Wolves tomorrow would they?
