tb2,

Not really. I do know the job has been posted and they will be receiving "applications" until 11-15-03.

While I am happy for John Hynes, the timing was not particularly good, and its going to be a real challenge to find a good, quality second assistant at midseason.

Norwich is an interesting possibility. Hybs had mentioned Ken Martell from the NTDP. I though David Quinn, also of the NTDP is an intriguing possibililty. Nevertheless, its going to have to be younger guy, who knows NA talent. I'd like to see UW head up to the Tier II leagues in Canada (BCJHL, AJHL, SJHL...) and pluck out some quality talent.

Hard to say, but I don't have any insight into who the Badgers might be considering.

Did you ever hear anything about UND recruit Rylan Kaip? He's six months older than Joudrey, and had 56 points last year to Joudrey's 78. He was drafted in the ninth round last year. Thanks.

ND really does do a horrible job of promoting their players don't they..at least on their website?

I got to know a former coach of Joudrey from back in Nova Scotia who was very informative but nothing at ND.

I think Kaip's probably been a 2nd line center the previous two years, though, because I believe it was MacMurchy-some kid named Owen I think-Joudrey two years ago and Joudrey was moved to ND's first line center last season. He should get his chance to bust out this year. In reading their message board a while back someone mentioned that CC was looking at him too.

Sounds like the Sioux are also looking at Evan Rankin, FYI.

You could probably throw Mark Strobel's name out there, too, if you're talking former Badgers. Strobel and Raygor are good, young assistants with some recruiting experience.

Obviously Eaves will pick the person he's most comfortable with as he did with Hynes and Ward so I hope people don't cry again if it's not a former Badger!

I agree with the comments that we have to do a better job of recruiting in Canada.

A few questions if anyone has the answers:
1) Is Phil Kessel related to a Prof. Kessel from UW Engineering (retired now) who was also a Michigan grad?

2) I noticed the other day a Norwich associated with the hockeyscouting.ca page. Is he the former UW (super)star D-man?

3) I saw a player from Minnesota (Gorowsky) listed on Heisenberg's page. Is he related to a former Badger player from the early 80's?

Maybe (tongue-in-cheek) Engblom (ex-UW D-man) has made enough money playing NHL and ESPN that he may want to coach??

tb2- Yes, Prof Kessel is Phil's grandpa. Phil's dad was a q-back for Madison Memorial High school and went on to be an all american at Northern Michigan. He played for the Washington Redskins, but got most of his playing time in the CFL. My son is a good friend of little Phil; played AAA with him for 6 years. :)

Thanks MadCityRich.

I can remember Prof. Phil Kessel well. Very nice man, but a huge Michigan fan. If that adds anything to the debate over where young Phil Kessel will end up at.

Nothing we didn't already know but here's the press release on our 3 new Badgers:

Despite losing Hagemo, this is the start of a **** good class! Hopefully the Badgers can add to it and fill a few more holes!

I don't like all these connections Kessel has to Michigan..dammit!:-))

Wasn't it you that once said Andrew Joudrey was nothing more than a 3rd line center?:-))

Wisconsin Hockey: 3rd line for the Washington Capitals maybe!:-))

It would be neat if one of the posters on here could see first hand Kuk and Drewiske. In my opinion, based solely on numbers and possible "connections", one of these two defensemen will be the likely "fill" for the Hagemo schollie. I wonder who is better and at which phases of the game.

Is this Hagemo thing going to put the team in the same sort of position as the Tanabe departure will? I seem to think UW had to bring Jackson in a desperate sort of move when Jackson wasn't really ready. So is this the sort of thing that can linger for a while or am I just overly concerned about things?

HC,

Hagemo isn't that type of loss. UW still has plenty of time to recruit a kid from Tier II in Canada, the USHL, or other league to come in for '04.

Hagemo is a really good recruit, but UW will land on its feet. With Hagemo out and assuming Suter leaves, this leaves Olinger, Likens, Sawatske, Gilbert, Julka, and Klubertanz. You've got a slot or two open back there, and I'm sure there is a quality recruit out there who'd love to come to Wisconsin. If Suter leaves, you've got scholarship space to work with, and I think everything will work out just fine. Its called the "early signing period" because it is just that..."early". Easy big fella. :D

I have to admit, it is disappointing to see Hagemo renig...but it opens the door for another kid to come in and shine.

Wisconsin Hockey: D it Up.

Yeah, I wasn't really comparing Hagemo to Tanabe. That would be quite a reach. I realize that it's just the early signing period, and that this team is in better shape to handle this. I guess I was just worried that Eaves and Co. won't fill Hagemo's spot, then Suter leaves and you're left a bit shorthanded. But I don't know enough about the recruiting game to comment intelligently.

Let's quit talking about Hagemo. Can't blame him, he's probably always wanted to be a rodent; his loss although he doesn't know how well he looks in red.

Anyone know if there has been any interest from either party with Paul Stastny as he seems to be doing pretty well with River City in the USHL. I know right now we are definately in greater need of a Dman like Drewiske or Kuk, but there is a scholie and a half left. At this point, waiting on Bertram/Kessel may prove to be a mistake, as both may never play a minute of college hockey. Besides, unless Kessel excelerates, he is a recruit for '06 anyways. In '06 we should have several scholarships to work with, as all the current Sophmores on scholarship will be gone.

I think you bring up a good point Mark in iplying that we need to still almost look for TALENT over position. Give the scholarship and a half to the best player(s) that we can get to commit.

That said, I really think Drewiske might end up being a guy we want. He's a guy we on this board may have overlooked simply because (I think) we are from Madison and did not hear much about northern hs players. The state HS player of the year followed up by leading the Bucs d-corps as a rookie is pretty impressive stuff, and he appears to have good size as well.

I think we will try and land both he and Kuk, maybe both for next year (if Suter were to leave) or get one for next year and one for the year after.

I actually also wonder who from the NTDP we might be after for NEXT YEAR (Auffrey's class). There has to be someone...
