View Full Version : Petition against DivIII changes
You have to wonder how much money the schools had to put out to fight this stupid thing. I'll bet it was a boat load considering I read that they hired I think 2 Public Relations firms. They should send the bill to Middlebury. I'm glad we won but still steamed about having to go thru this ludicrious process.

....seems like the Money Honey took my advise and shattered the ice ceiling so that women hockey players at RPI will be as well compensated as the men "puck slappers". At least the patronage is getting spread around evenly......and all hockey fans will be expected to vote for Chuck "the Enforcer" Schumer. Let's hope Ms. Jackson is as devoted and as consciencous in her representation of the PUBLIC shareholders of ATT, Medtronic, Marathon Oil, Federal Express?, and the New York Stock Exchange. She is very popular to serve on everybody's compensation committee.....for management or shareholders?...that's the question. She, NYSE board, and Elliottt Spitzer are all working to get Grasso to re-gurgitate $150 million of past and future compensation. She wants the money back.....maybe the new board can divide it amongst themselves. Watch for big corporate donations to RPI..and Chuck's "re-election and/or retiremnent" funds.
Let's xtend the RPI season to more games....the alumns want to get their money's worth. kash
Glad to see the rumours aren't true Kash!

Oh yeah... it was all thanks to the incoherent ramblings of some guy living in his parents' basement that RPI is elevating their women's hockey team to Division I.
Stop eating paint chips.

The grant goes to all foregin students athletes or not. I don't see RPI giving scholarships to Canadian students that financially qualify who don't play hockey.
So now we can all hope that the bozos who wanted to ban scholarships can ban the diversity grant bulls*&t. Yes, let's waste a few more hundred thousand dollars just to drag Onion into the soup.;)

Can someone explain all of the ways...Canadiann and other foreign hockey players get "financed" to play in NCAA hockey...D1 and 3....and how that compares to non-hockey playing Canadians and others. What are the options....athlete scholarship,needs-based scholarships, grants, loans ....and how are they quietly manipulated, if so, by foregiveness etc. thx, kash

Thanks to all who supported this campaign and signed the petition. I don't know how much of an influence it had compared to the strong lobbying efforts of RPI, CC, SLU, Clarkson, et. al., but I'd like to think it had an impact.
Must say, I'm surprised (and glad) that SAJ threw herself behind this wholeheartedly. Might have to re-consider that donation to RPI the next time they call... hmmm.....
Not surprising that Union pres voted against RPI... says he decided Mon morning... gee, almost seems like he waited to decide till after this weekend's pair of Union/RPI hockey games. Wonder if the fact that RPI swept Union factored into his decision making at all? :D

More stupidity from King Nothing...
McCardell said the debate, highly-spirited at times, never got to the personal level. "The debate was healthy," he said. "The beliefs on both sides were sincere and deeply held."
Hmm... I guess this isn't "personal" then.
Suzanne Coffey, Bates College Athletic Director, echoed Ledwin's words. "It's a blatant special interest deal," she said of Prop 65-I. "It in effect cancels out Proposal 65. It's totally contrary to the tenants of Division III."
Lincoln College president Ivory Nelson went further to state that Prop 65-I "... was strategically drafted to stop any effect on Proposal 65 on the (65-I) sponsor schools. It's special interest legislation that gives special treatment to eight members. This is not reform."

...here's a question....did the 4 hockey colleges ever offer any concessions to make athletic scholarships more D3 compatible? Major issue: a recruited athletic scholarship kid....gets injured, can't handle both academics and hockey, gets cut from the team, or simply decides to pursue Physics or Poetry over pucks....and hence can't or doesn't want to play. Does that kid lose his scholarship?...and de facto loses his chance for the oh-so lauded educational opppotunity at these 4 colleges? Couldn't the coaches and colleges take the risk that they know how to recruit the right talent that can and will play? I met a kid this summer....who was cut as a frosh at one of these colleges....should he be forced to transfer to find a scholarship? I find this the single most ****ing part of the athketic scholarships at D3 colleges. You will note how different the Ivy and NESCACs are on this issue. Any info/insights on this issue? thx, kash

When Allie Skelley had a career-ending inury, SLU honored his scholarship, and I imagine any school would have done the same. I think that when a D-1 scholarship player gets cut, he generally transfers - playing hockey is a big deal to these kids. I don't know of any particular situations where a kid just didn't play hockey for whatever reason and decided to stay and wanted to keep his hockey scholarship. I think it would be up to the school.
However, I don't see how this would be a concession on the part of the play-up schools, since I don't see how it addresses any of the problems alleged by supporters of the reform package. Also, the preferred alternative for those people supporting the original legislation was for students at these schools to have no scholarship in the first place. Their alternative is exactly the same whether 65-1 was defeated outright or unanimously supported: go somewhere else.

RPI '75 That's good to hear. I wonder how the other old Tri-state League member Middlebury voted.

For clarification, I hate Hull too. He wishes Union were still a NESCAC school. He treats the athletic programs to NESCAC standards. Hull's a ****ing wannabe who will never be a NESCAC president and his quest to do so is only dragging others down with him.

>>>Rensselaer noted that 20 of its current 27 hockey players >>>made the Dean's list last semester.
I'd like to know answers to a couple of questions that i HOPE Hull looked at.
Historically who has a better record Union's D3 teams or RPI's?
How many of RPI's D1 students made the deans list compared to their D3 students. Same question at Union.
Why did Joe Juneau choose RPI? =)
Instead, I think he took the quote unquote preferential treatment of D1 students who get scholarships too far. Maybe it is philosophicly(sp?) unfair for these players to get scholarships, but you know what? They're not failing out, and 20 out of 27 is quite successful.
Also, yes, it is unfair that these hockey players have the god given skills and other don't, but Hull isn't the one waking up at 5am for practice either!
In conclusion, While I agree with Hull that it's a philosophical difference, I believe that it is a FLIMSY and MINOR difference which at least at RPI (20 out of 27 on the deans list) is not being taken advantage of. Last I knew, basket weaving was not being offered at RPI.
HEY! Let's also look at it another way. What is the dropout rate at the 8 schools in question and Union. Lets compare all students to D1 students. (muhahaha)
PS - Lets thank the hockey team for RPI's football team making it so far!!!
