Well now I will have to root for Cornell to beat them even though it might be to RPI's advantage for Un!on to win.

Now that this has been settled, it has been announced that RPI is moving the women's team to D1.

No timetable announced yet for the move.

Quoting RPI President Shirley Jackson: "...For Release: IMMEDIATE
January 12, 2004

Statement of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute President Shirley Ann Jackson Regarding Today’s NCAA Division III Reform Vote in Nashville, Tennessee

Today we saw perhaps the most important reaffirmation of the Rensselaer men’s hockey team in its 100-year history.

The NCAA Division III membership has voted to accept an amendment to its reform package that will allow Rensselaer, and seven other affected institutions, to continue to offer grants-in-aid to Division I athletes, in our case, our hockey players. This is an affirmation of a main tenet of the NCAA philosophy: to protect and support the autonomy of each member institution.

Our men’s hockey team can now continue to recruit the high-level student-athletes that Rensselaer attracts. The vote also allows us to launch our plan to move our women’s ice hockey team to Division I status. Our women’s program has shown that it can compete at the highest level in Division III, and it is time to move up. This move is also in the interest of gender equity in our athletics offerings.

The plan to elevate women’s ice hockey has been under consideration for quite some time. To put it into action, we are drafting a timeline for the process, which includes application to the ECAC Division I women’s ice hockey league. At this time, the league includes the schools our men’s hockey team faces in league play: Brown, Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, St. Lawrence, Union, Vermont, and Yale.

Proposal 65 and the Division III reform package, together with all of the actions we are taking under The Rensselaer Plan, have compelled us to re-examine the role – and positioning – of athletics at Rensselaer. Our men’s hockey players are proof that our students can compete at the highest level of inter-collegiate athletics, while succeeding in the classroom. We believe our women’s team will do the same.

There are numerous people to thank for the positive outcome of the NCAA vote: our colleagues at Clarkson, Colorado College, Hartwick, Johns Hopkins, SUNY at Oneonta, Rutgers University-Newark, and St. Lawrence, the institutions we worked with closely on amendment 65-1. We are especially grateful for the strong support of thousands of Rensselaer alumni, students, faculty, staff, hockey players past and present, and fans from the Capital Region and around the world. We could not have prevailed without them.

As the saying goes, “It’s a great day for hockey.” It also is a great day for Rensselaer athletics.

Congrats on 65-1 passing.

I don't think anyone should be mad at Union, no vote is much better than voting down 65-1.

Is anyone sure that kash isn't Shirley Ann Jackson's stalker?

Ralph

Yep. It was in reaction to the Denny "no support of the hockey program" Brown, who, I believe, would have supported Union's vote today.

Now that we have an administration that cares and the ability to do it, I will go back to joecct77.

cct2div3 is officially retired. :)

Women’s Hockey To Be Elevated to Division I

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) President Shirley Ann Jackson announced today that the Institute is planning to elevate the women’s ice hockey program Division III to Division I. A timetable is being developed for the move.

“We have been evaluating our options for moving a women’s varsity sport to Division I for some time,” President Jackson said. “We have a great tradition in ice hockey, making it an appropriate choice as a Division I sport at Rensselaer. We are now drafting a timeline, which will include an application to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).”

“It’s an exciting time at Rensselaer,” said Director of Athletics Ken Ralph. “With outstanding student-athletes, a top young head coach in John Burke, and our winning tradition, I believe we can make an impact at the Division I level in the not-too-distant future.”

“I am thrilled and the members of the women’s team are thrilled,” said Burke, who took over the women’s program after the sudden death of Bill Cahill in October. “We have an opportunity to carry out one of Bill’s goals, which was to compete successfully at the highest level, and we are elated.”

Rensselaer elevated its women’s hockey program from a club team to a varsity team beginning in the 1995-96 season. After only two seasons of sub-.500 records, the Engineers have posted winning marks every year since. In its eight years of varsity status leading into this season, RPI had an overall record of 108-83-10 (.562) with four post-season appearances.

Rensselaer’s best season came last year when the team won a school-record 20 games (20-7-0 overall; 17-3-0 ECAC East) and advanced to the finals of the ECAC East Tournament. Individually, Cahill was named the league’s Coach of the Year, Julie Vallarelli was the Goaltender of the Year, and Julie Welte was honored as the Rookie of the Year.

This season, RPI is 10-2-2 overall and 6-1-0 in the ECAC East. The Engineers, who are in first place in the league standings, are currently ranked eighth in the nation in Division III.

With its elevation, the women’s ice hockey program would become the second Division I sport at Rensselaer, joining the men’s hockey program. The men’s team has been in existence since 1901-02 and has two National Championships to its credit (1954 & 1985). RPI also has 21 Division III programs.

Should Rensselaer be accepted to the ECAC, it will join a league that currently features Brown, Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, St. Lawrence, Union, Vermont, and Yale. The same 12 schools currently make up the ECAC Division I men’s hockey league.

Where's Kash? It looks like he disappeared off the radar screen, but perhaps with good reason as he must be having dinner with John McCardell (and Union's President) to discusss the sanctity of D-3 athletics and the "atrocities" of awarding scholarships on a play-up basis.

To have won by such an overwhelming margin makes this victory even sweeter. I wish McCardell nothing but the "best" in his retirement and pray that he always remains retired.

Goodbye Kash. Goodbye John McCardell. It's been "nice" knowing you.

Dutchfan, I appreciate and enjoy reading your posts, but I fear that a no vote from Union on this issue will only fuel an already flamable rivalry with RPI. Not to mention Clarkson and St.Lawrence.

Union just might find many teams in the ECAC getting up just for them.

Good Luck with that. ;)

I still think it might be best if we put out a suicide watch.
